The power of the Elves is ended. The time has come for the dominion of Men, at least on the old Arda.
Long ago we retreated to the Blessed Realm, and gave the Earth to others. Now we have risen to the stars and the resurrection of the Eldar can begin.

Hello! And welcome. I finally decided to purchase Stellaris during the Christmas sales, but have been unable to play until now, and instead of properly learning how to play the game, I decided to start an AAR from my very first real campaign. Before this I've only played one "tutorial" campaign, which ended horribly after about 57 years into the game. I am a veteran of HoI series. going as far back as 2009, I've also played a lot of Victoria II, CKII and EUIV, so everything in Stellaris isn't totally new for me, still I have a lot to discover, and this AAR will "record" that process.

Also, as you might have noticed, I'm a big fan of J.R.R Tolkien.

Prologue: The Beginning

The beginning of our Stellar empire. the prototype science vessel Fingolfin departs the home world under the guidance of Elder Guilin. It's mission is to chart and explore the galaxy and to find habitable worlds, it shall be followed by similar vessels in the future, as we expand our ship building capacity.
Our new home shall be the stars.

Above the planet, on the Orbital station Tol Eressëa stands Finwë, High King of the Eldar. It has been a long journey away from the original home planet of his people.
Several decades ago a crude colony ship landed on this lush continental world, which received the same name as the home they left behind, Arda, orbiting a star which also received a familiar name; Vása, the consumer.
The new Arda was supposed to become the eternal home for the Eldar, instead the long journey through space had awoken a new fire in his people, the fire of curiosity. With heavy heart he watched as the most sophisticated vessel ever built by his people sailed away towards the galaxy.
"May the grace of Valar be forever in your favour."

The High King did not need wait long for a discovery. Alien structures were found in our own doorstep, from Idrial, one of two moons of the gas giant Morwen. Though it was wisely decided to leave these structures alone until we are better prepared to study them, but one thing was certain, we are not alone.
The mission of the science vessel Fingolfin continued to the nearby Haduphis system. On the way she demonstrated for the first time in normal operational conditions the effectiveness of our warp drives, they were found sufficient.

The Haduphis system proved to be a lucky pick amongst all the systems near us, for it contained a continental world, not very different from Arda. The scientists sent several probes to study the planet, and found primitive lifeforms. This information caused a bit of a stir in the home world, and the council of Elders decided that there was a real threat of an advanced alien civilisations, who would not adhere to our pacifist views. So with heavy hearts the council ordered the construction of a small squadron of armed star ships under the command of Elder Curufin, a formidable warrior, to defend our people. Another order was given to design and build a colony ship to be sent to this new world.
Many elves still saw this exploration as a bad idea, but even they could not deny our progress, within a year Elder Guilin had found ancient alien structures, habitable planet, and primitive lifeforms, what wonders would we discover in a hundred years? Or what horrors.

I Situation Report: First contact and Troubles on the final frontier.

The first contact. It was achieved only one and a half years after our science ship had begun it's mission. The rapid rate of this discovery alarmed the Quendi. High King Finwë himself assured the people that there was no need to panic. Contact with the aliens would be established as soon as we are able to decipher their communication signals. Needless to say this changes our world forever.

Meanwhile the EEV Fingolfin continues it's exploration mission in the Pash system. The third planet in the system attracted Elder Guilin to study it further. The Quendi found this planet's natural beauty to be mesmerizing, but unfortunately it's surface was unfit for colonization.
However this moving object concerned Guilin tremendously, and it soon became the centre of her attention.

After nearly six months of deciphering, we finally made contact with the Aliens, calling themselves the "Obbha Coalition", they appeared to be some kind of fungal lifeforms, and in our great relief, seemed to be friendly. We proceeded to establish more permanent diplomatic relations, and after unanimously deciding that nothing would be gained from hostile relations, the Ecumene signed a pact of non-aggression with the Obbha Coalition. From what our new friends told us, they were just as surprised to discover our presence as we had been to discover them. It was the most cherished wish of their leader, Executive Huava uvi-Averfin, that we might find safety from each other as we work to discover the secrets of the galaxy.
Still, it was decided to increase our defence budget, better safe than sorry.

During the talks with the fungal aliens a new science vessel was commissioned above the skies of Arda, the vessel, named EEV Galadriel, was given under the command of Elder Campramar, who was instructed to begin her quest from the Higashik-Ata system and work her way in to the opposite direction from Elder Guilin and EEV Fingolfin, yet this assignment was to become the first tragedy of our quest for the stars.
During the operations above the first planet of the system, the EEV Galadriel suffered a containment breach in its reactor core, the safety of the entire ship was put into jeopardy, but thanks to a valiant act of sacrifice by Elder Campramar the engine room was successfully purged of the radiation. Unfortunately Elder Campramar received a lethal dose of radiation poisoning, and could not be saved.
Her place was taken by Maeglin, her second in command, who was appointed Elder despite his relatively young age. This would not be the end of the vessel's misfortunes.

While the Galadriel's mission suffered almost an immediate setback, the Fingolfin continued it's successes by finding yet another world of primitive lifeforms, but this time they appear developed enough to achieve tentative mastery over the planet, Elder Guilin hopes that the council will grant funds for a research and monitoring station.

At home our researchers toil day and night to advance our standings in the universe. The High king monitored the three main departments closely, and was a frequent visitor in the space station Tol Eressëa
"Your Majesty", the three elders bowed. "We are honoured once again to receive you to this station."
"The honour is mine my dear friends", the king said and then continued. "In the light of the recent events taking place outside of our home system, I am stressing the importance of your work to the Elder council nearly every day. Tell me you have something I could show them to calm their hearts, and possibly loosen their purse strings for more funding?"

The king's pleas were answered, Elder Cirdán's colony ship project was advancing, the project was temporarily halted when the Society department became busy with the alien signals, but now the project could continue, and Cirdán promised that the vessel could begin construction within two years.
Elder Celebrian had just begun to work in improving the shielding of our vessels, her department would be busy with starship projects for a long time into the foreseeable future.
Elder Idril meanwhile worked to reduce our energy spending, and like the other two departments, she too had a long list of projects to study after the solar panels are installed on Tol Eressëa.
The high king left the station pleased, and held an optimistic speech before the council who were still worried from the possibility of superior hostile aliens, and the ever increasing costs of the space exploration.
(Question: Does constructing research stations actually speed up the research or do they just provide research points or whatever?)

The councils worries were not entirely pointless for the EEV Galadriel once again got into trouble, this time at the Daranma system. The disturbed space monsters attacked the vessel like couple of angry Balrogs, the ship is now MIA. The High king was furious and ordered the name of his granddaughter to be removed from the vessel, as soon as it would be found. Elder Maeglin at least learned one thing: Never tickle a sleeping dragon. The ship returned home for repairs few months later, and was renamed EEV Curu, meaning skill.

Creatures very similar to those who attacked Elder Maeglin were seen not so far from our home system by one of our orbital sensors, we have nicknamed them Space Tentacles.

The Morrigan is best known as a goddess of battle. In Irish mythology if there is conflict and strife, chances are you'll find the black-winged Morrigan there, too. But the Morrigan fills many roles and had many guises, all of which are discussed in detail in my book, Celtic Lore & Spellcraft of the Dark Goddess: Invoking the Morrigan.
