Montana Grizzlies Mascot The Montana Grizzlies mascot is an integral part of the University of Montana's athletic programs. The mascot, named Monte, represents the strength and ferocity of the grizzly bear, which happens to be the official state animal of Montana. Monte made his debut as the official mascot in 1993 and has since become a beloved figure among Grizzlies fans. The costume itself is designed to resemble a grizzly bear, with realistic fur and distinct facial features. However, when the team moved to Memphis, Grizz’s appearance was also changed. He became bluish, rather muscular, and lost his huge bear belly. This was planned – Memphis is among the most obese cities in America, and so a chubby mascot would be sending the wrong message.
His achievements were finally recognized in 2011 when he was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame and he deserved it completely, in our humble opinion. In celebration of the Grizzlies historic 10th Season in Memphis, Grizz re-introduced his equally popular alter-ego, Super Grizz, as a nod to the organizations first seasons in the Bluff City.
Monte's role goes beyond entertaining fans during sporting events. He is also involved in community outreach programs and school events, making appearances at local schools, parades, and charity events.
