Magic Knight Rayearth is a popular Japanese manga and anime series that was created by Clamp. The story follows three ordinary junior high school girls named Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji, who are transported to the magical world of Cephiro after being summoned by Princess Emeraude. Clef, also known as Master Mage Clef, is a powerful and wise magician who serves as the guardian of Princess Emeraude and the chief magic teacher in Cephiro. He takes the form of an old man with long white hair and a long white beard, wearing a tattered blue cape and a staff. Clef possesses immense magical powers and is highly skilled in both offensive and defensive magic. He is one of the few characters in the series who can open the gates to Cephiro and communicate with the Pillar System, which maintains the balance of the world.
As the oldest and wisest Guru in Cephiro, Clef knows more about magic than anyone else in the land; he teaches magic to those with the potential to use it. He promised Emerode that he would assist the "Girls from Another World" in their quest to become Magic Knights. Even though Clef looks like a little kid, he's really 745 years old. He also packs quite a temper when provoked.
Despite his old age, he has a short temper and a nasty habit of waving that staff around when he s bothered especially in the beginning of the series when he seems to be par with Umi in terms of snapping at people. He is then the first person the girls meet when they arrive to Cephiro and he didn t really make a good impression of himself at their first encounter, but he s the one assigned by Princess Emerode to outfit and train the fledgling Magic Knights so that they might awaken the Mashin and save Cephiro.
He is one of the few characters in the series who can open the gates to Cephiro and communicate with the Pillar System, which maintains the balance of the world. Clef can also create powerful shields to protect himself and others, as well as cast complex spells to aid the Magic Knights in their battle against the forces of evil. Despite his role as a wise and powerful mentor, Clef is often portrayed as eccentric and occasionally grumpy.
