Personal opinions were considered articles of authoritative dogma. People, places, and things were all taken for granted - most of all my parents, who tried to teach me a better way of dealing with things through both positive instruction and example. It took the world itself, which doesn't remain a perpetual playhouse, to remind me that I was not always right nor deserving of so many dispensations. The harder the adversity, the clearer my comprehension of how harmful it is not to be forgiving, to be flexible, to be understanding in the simple humanist sense. The humanist forgives fully and never regrets compassion. We recognize that as we forgive, we exercise a mercy which has been extended to us so many times before.
