Pair Of Oklahoma City Hosts Fired For 2016 Off-Air Recording

Tyler Media has cut ties with a pair of hosts after audio from 2016 was released making off-the-air comments about Native Americans.

Sports “107.7 The Franchise” KRXO-FM afternoon co-host Sam Mayes and current AC “Magic 104.1” KMGL morning co-host and cluster Promotions Director Cara Rice were recorded during a commercial break discussing the Native American community beginning to push the former Washington Redskins to change their name. Rice made a few disparaging racist stereotype jokes and the conversation turned to how they’re going to lose their jobs someday.

Rice has worked at multiple stations in Oklahoma City previously co-hosting afternoons at KRXO-FM with Mayes and Colby Daniels. She previously served as local morning voice on the station’s former Classic Rock format during the Bob & Tom Show. She moved from KRXO-FM to KMGL in January 2019.

Mayes, a former Oklahoma University and NFL lineman, has been with The Franchise since its launch in August 2013 first in late mornings and then afternoons. Mayes also currently co-hosts 9-11am on Stephens Media Group’s “97.1 The Sports Animal” KYAL-FM Tulsa. Mayes released the following statement on Saturday regarding his termination:

Review: I was really disappointed with Kmgl Magic 104.1. The music they play is so outdated and repetitive. It feels like they never update their playlist. Also, the DJs are so annoying and talk way too much. I just wanted to listen to some good music, but this station just didn't deliver.

Review: I tried listening to Kmgl Magic 104.1 because I heard they play a variety of music. However, I was really disappointed with their selection. It felt like they only played the same songs over and over again. I was hoping for more diversity, but it just wasn't there. I ended up changing the station after a few songs because it got too repetitive for my liking.

Review: Kmgl Magic 104.1 claims to play the best hits, but I couldn't disagree more. The songs they choose to play are so outdated and I just don't connect with them. It feels like they are stuck in the past and don't keep up with the current music trends. I want a radio station that can introduce me to new songs and artists, but this is definitely not it.

Review: I can't understand why Kmgl Magic 104.1 is so popular. Their music selection is so limited and boring. It's like they only play the same songs from the 80s and 90s on repeat. I want to hear new and fresh music, but it seems like they are unwilling to take any risks. I don't think I'll be tuning in to this station again.
