The Evolution of Magical Devices in D&D 5e - From Hit or Miss to Game Changers

By admin

Hit or miss magical devices can add an element of surprise and unpredictability to a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition campaign. These devices are magical items that have a random effect when used, and they can lead to both positive and negative outcomes. The main idea is that hit or miss magical devices can create memorable and exciting moments in the game, as players never know what will happen when they use these items. Unlike other magical items with specific effects, hit or miss magical devices have a wide range of possible outcomes. Some devices may provide a powerful boon or advantage to the player, while others may cause harm or hinder their progress. The success or failure of these devices is determined by a dice roll, adding an element of chance to the game.

Potion of True Healing
Potion, rare When you drink this potion, you regain 35 hit points and are cured of blindness, deafness, and any disease affecting you.

Apply that to three attacks per round with a burst of six attacks on a round where Action Surge is activated and fight against a monster with 200 HP an efreet for example and you can get some way out of scale damage spikes. It seems to be missing the higher rarities, which are likely more interesting for increased damage - for example, the rare flame blade adds 2d6 fire endgroup.

The success or failure of these devices is determined by a dice roll, adding an element of chance to the game. The use of hit or miss magical devices can make gameplay more dynamic and suspenseful. Players must carefully weigh the potential risks and rewards of using these items.

Which magic weapon deals the most damage?

1 To make damage calculations comparable, use the expected base damage assuming a hit (without hit chance adjustment for different ACs), and add additional damage from critical hits. As we assume a hit already, and a 1 would always miss, there are only 19/20 possible d20 results to account for for a critical, so use 5.26% chance for that.

You can in addition provide the expected damage against an average AC that gives you a base 65% hit chance (and if you like use increased hit chance on that base from advantage), and use the normal 5% critical chance for that.

\$\begingroup\$ Since it is not entirely clear for me: Do you want the calculations to use median/expected averages damages or shall we assume max dice where applicable? Also, may we crit? (thinking of a vorporal sword or similar which do extra stuff on a crit) \$\endgroup\$

\$\begingroup\$ @TobiasF. I will add this. I am looking for expected damage, not maximum damage (because this is much more relevant in actual play). You can assume normal crit chances. Vorpal is tricky as most of the time, it just beheads and does not deal damage, not sure how to handle that. \$\endgroup\$

They must decide if the potential benefits outweigh the possible negative consequences. This can lead to interesting choices and strategies within the game, as players need to consider the potential consequences of their actions. Players may also need to be creative in using hit or miss magical devices, as they may need to find unconventional ways to make the most of these items. They may need to combine the device with other spells or abilities to maximize its effectiveness or minimize the negative outcomes. This can encourage players to think outside the box and come up with unique solutions to challenges. However, it is important for the Dungeon Master to carefully balance the use of hit or miss magical devices. The devices should be exciting and unpredictable without causing too much frustration or imbalance in the game. It is important to ensure that the potential negative outcomes of these devices are not too severe or frequent, as this can lead to player dissatisfaction. In conclusion, hit or miss magical devices can be a fun and challenging addition to a Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition campaign. These devices can create memorable and exciting moments, as players never know what will happen when they use these items. However, it is crucial to carefully balance the use of these devices to ensure an enjoyable gaming experience for everyone involved..

Reviews for "The Role of Magical Devices in Dungeon Crawls in D&D 5e - Avoiding the Misses and Finding Hidden Treasures"

- John - 1 star - This book was a huge disappointment. I was expecting a fun and exciting collection of magical devices, but instead what I got was a jumbled mess. The items were poorly described and the mechanics were confusing. It feels like the authors rushed to put this book together without giving it the attention and care it needed. I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on this one.
- Sarah - 2 stars - I had high hopes for "Hit or miss magical devices 5e", but unfortunately, it fell flat for me. The devices included in this book lacked creativity and uniqueness. They felt like generic and uninspired items that I had seen in other sources before. The writing style also made it difficult to follow along and understand the mechanics behind the devices. Overall, I was underwhelmed and wished I had spent my money on a different magical devices book.
- Alex - 2 stars - The title of this book, "Hit or miss magical devices 5e", is unfortunately an accurate description. Some of the devices included in this book were interesting and useful, but many of them seemed unbalanced and poorly thought out. The lack of playtesting or balancing is evident throughout the book, and it made me hesitate to use any of the devices in my own games. I appreciate the effort put into creating this collection, but I ultimately cannot recommend it to others looking for reliable and well-crafted magical devices.
