In retrospect, Israel Adesanya might never have stood a chance.

Two of sports’ greatest jinxes were working against him.

Adesanya was stunningly defeated by Sean Strickland by unanimous decision Saturday night at UFC 293, losing his middleweight title in the process.

He wasn’t the only one who lost.

Hip-hop megastar Drake bet $500,000 that Adesanya would knock Strickland out, posting a picture of his wager on Instagram.

With Adesanya entering the bout a steep favorite, the estimated payout would have been $920,000.

Drake has long been teased as a so-called “curse” for athletes and teams he supports.

Often after he takes a picture with an athlete or team — or makes a large wager — that athlete or team loses or falls short of expectations.

There was Conor McGregor, Serena Williams, the Kentucky men’s basketball team — the list goes on.

But it wasn’t just Drake working against Adesanya.

The 34-year-old Adesanya is also the cover athlete for UFC 5, the latest video game for the MMA promotion.

Cover athletes for video games across sports have notoriously preceded rough seasons or events.

It began with Madden, the most prominent NFL video game, and the “Madden Curse.”

Michael Vick, Shaun Alexander, Marshall Faulk, Peyton Hillis — again, the list goes on.

“I had a different plan for this, but life throws curveballs at you,” Adesanya told reporters after his loss. “Win or lose, I wasn’t going to say much anyway, but right now, I lost tonight to the better man on the night and I just want to be with people who care about me, my team, so I’m going to go do that.”

The result marked one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, and ushered in new doubts about Adesanya’s future.

“Am I dreaming? Am I going to wake up? Someone hit me … I don’t cry much but I’m trying to keep it together right now,” Strickland said after the bout. “I give up so many brain cells to the MMA gods… I thought I’d be walking away a little bloody, a little broken up. I’m a little shocked that didn’t happen.”

Shortly after the Raptors' victory, other teams and athletes began to defy the Drake Curse. Jadon Sancho, a professional soccer player, received a shoutout from Drake on Instagram. Despite widespread fears that the curse would strike, Sancho had a fantastic season with Borussia Dortmund, contributing greatly to the team's success in the German Bundesliga. Even in the world of tennis, the Drake Curse has seemingly been broken. Coco Gauff, a rising star in the sport, had the opportunity to meet Drake before her matches at the US Open in 2019. Many feared that this encounter would bring bad luck, but Gauff made it all the way to the third round, defeating more experienced opponents along the way. Her impressive performance caught the attention of tennis fans worldwide and cemented the belief that the Drake Curse may finally be a thing of the past. While it may be too early to declare the curse fully broken, these recent success stories provide hope and a glimmer of optimism for both sports fans and athletes. The Drake Curse, once a source of amusement and disbelief, is now being questioned and challenged. Perhaps it was never as strong as it seemed, or maybe Drake's luck is finally turning around. Only time will tell, but for now, fans and athletes alike can enjoy the possibility of a sports world free from the woes of the infamous Drake Curse..

Reviews for "The Drake Curse Broken: Athletes Rejoice!"

1. Jennifer - 2 stars
I was a bit disappointed with "Drake curse broken". While the idea of breaking a so-called curse associated with a celebrity is interesting, the execution fell short for me. The plot was predictable and lacked depth. The characters felt one-dimensional and I struggled to connect with them. Additionally, the pacing was off, with some scenes dragging on while others felt rushed. Overall, I found the film to be underwhelming and would not recommend it.
2. Mark - 1 star
"Drake curse broken" was a complete waste of time in my opinion. The concept had potential, but it was poorly executed. The writing was lackluster, filled with clichés and unimaginative dialogue. The acting was equally disappointing, with performances that felt forced and unconvincing. The film failed to build any suspense or deliver on its promises. I found myself disinterested and uninvested in the story or the characters. I regret watching it and would advise others to steer clear of this film.
3. Laura - 2.5 stars
I had mixed feelings about "Drake curse broken". While I appreciated the attempt to explore the idea of breaking a curse associated with a celebrity, the film fell flat in many aspects. The pacing was inconsistent, with moments of excitement followed by dull scenes that dragged on. The plot lacked originality and failed to offer any surprises. The performances were average, and I struggled to connect with the characters on an emotional level. Overall, the film had potential but fell short of my expectations.
