It was believed that witches could cause harm through curses, spells, or the use of familiars, which were thought to be demons in animal form. The methods used to identify witches varied throughout history. In some cases, individuals were accused based on physical peculiarities or unusual behavior. Others were accused based on testimony from witnesses who claimed to have seen them performing rituals or engaging in supernatural activities. The use of "witch prickers" or "witch finders" was also common, where suspected witches were examined for marks or imperfections that were believed to be a sign of their association with the devil.
