We’re approaching the end of the year, but our work on the game is not yet finished. Today’s update introduces, above all else, important narrative content - main story quests! The MSQ path can now be played from start to finish. • Clicking dialogue window now displays full text instead of skipping dialogue
  • You can now find and unlock Weather Prediction Ritual
  • You can now skip cutscenes. But don’t do it, they’re worth watching!

The Witch of Fern Island Get Wood

I’m having some issues with the commissions. I have the wood I need in my inventory for Urushu and Miruta but when I speak to them it says “condition not met”. Running out of time if anyone can help!

This review is in no way a discouragement from buying and playing this game. This is intended for the developers to address some of the common issues that I have experienced in the game during my 52+ Hours of game play and to potentially implement some QOL fixes that i have observed.

1. The current seasonal life cycle. I understand the developers intentions in creating this system and it is a fantastic, However it is beyond frustrating when i need to get a flower. mushroom, or herb for a main or side quest only to realize that it was only in season in the previous season to what i am currently in when picking up the quest. I then have to wait for several play sessions to even be able to get said item, I feel like in this Scenario a "Ritual of Seasonal Change" is not out of reason and would not break the immersion factor while also respecting the players real world time investment.

2. Lack of a more comprehensive tutorial. I sincerely hope that the tutorial in its current form is not what will be in full release. It currently lacks detail on what your supposed to do in the starting days of the game and if not for the Wiki @https://witchoffernisland.wiki.gg/wiki/The_Witch_of_Fern_Island, I would have been lost for far longer than i was. There needs to be a tutorial system in place that is far more detailed than current.

3. Bees. Because i hate the bees. (that is all, just me complaining about the random bee attacks)

4. Flying, Once you are able to progress far enough to where you can craft your broom it gets much easier traversing the world, however some improvements need made to the world when viewed from the Air as there is a lot of asset pop ins that occur and being able to see through the map when viewing long distances. (Note: I understand that this game is in Alpha and understand that this will be addressed, just voicing my opinion on what i have seen)

5. The creation of a in game shop, I understand that the Witches stall serves this function however I feel like if they added a feature that the NPC's were able to take unwanted items it would be greatly helpful, Especially in the early stages of the game when you're struggling for currency, Even if they limit the amount of coins this NPC can have Daily and even do a value depletion vs. selling the item at your witches stall (This could be implemented in the form of a tax that is paid to the NPC for selling your goods).

This is a wonderfully cute game and i have greatly enjoyed my play through thus far. Below are bugs that i have found during my play through

Bug 1 : During the Breaking the Curse story line, after you perform the ritual on the cursed doll and wait 1 day after you are to return to Patrice however she never allows you to turn the quest in and it simply hangs never completing.
Bug 2 : During the I believe i can Fly story line, after crafting the Broom potion and actually crafting the Broom the progress of my quest has reset and is asking for me to craft the Broom potion again. This is particularly frustrating as i have already done it once and have the flying broom.
Bug 3: Siemibor random pop ins and outs, There has been a number of instances where i have been directly in front of this NPC for him to just randomly disappear of the face of the map. Frontally this is the only NPC that i have observed this with, however there have been situations where i have been foraging, Fishing or otherwise just exploring and will randomly be teleported to the hospital with no damage, No day reset, Just Poof and I am in the hospital.

Again this is a wonderful game and I hope that the developers are able to continue with it and bring it to Full release, To many games have been abandoned or linger in the alpha stages for to long before outright dying, I hope this will not be one of them.

Description

Welcome to the mysterious Fern Island! A lush temperate isle home to three great magical cultures - Boran, Apatut, and Kuqkwa - including one bright-eyed newcomer, Abrill. After crashing onto the island during her travels to a magical academy, the young witch makes the most of the situation, still eager to become a full-fledged Witch. Instead of waiting idly for her arrival, the Academy of Witches also decided to use this as an opportunity for young Abrill to demonstrate her mastery of magic… And unveil the secrets of the mysterious island.

But know this: Becoming the Witch of Fern Island isn't just about passing exams! It's about finding your place in the world, making friends, and most importantly, finding joy within every passing moment.

- Graduation means meeting the expectations of the Academy's Guardian Witch, and not by sitting through boring lectures. A witch learns on the job!

- Grow herbs and (magical) plants, raise animals of unusual nature, and experiment with enchantments of plants and animals.

- Develop Abrill’s own witch brand customizing her witch’s cottage as she sees fit through style and practicality.

- Of course, a witch is not merely a farmer! Brew magical potions at the cottage, craft arcane amulets, summon cute and surprisingly helpful familiars, and eventually, perform complex rituals to channel raw magic to command the weather.

- Did we mention that you’ll have the power to control your cat familiar?

- Explore the island at any pace between crystal ball calls from the Academy.

- Learn generations of magical arts here, and the witches’ stories accompanying them.

- Traverse the Island on foot, from the saddle of an elegant Tzoru, or dart across it aboard a flying broom - once the Guardian is satisfied with Abrill’s progress, of course.

- There's more than just history to find! Fern Island has been immersed in magic for centuries.

- Learn more not just about the island’s past, but also its myriad of magical plants, animals, insects, and beautiful vistas.

- A witch is not just a mistress of magic and an expert in all things arcane. She's also a part of the community!

- Become immersed in the culture and society of the Boran, Apatut, and Kuqkwa to learn their traditions and beliefs, participate in festivals, and ultimately find true friends among dozens of people.

- Uncover each new friend’s stories and secrets as Abrill solidifies herself as a part of the community

- Extend out a caring hand with a witch's touch to assist the locals in their share of problems and leave a lasting impression on every individual to earn the title: The Witch of Fern Island!

The Witch of Fern Island review for PC

My whole time playing The Witch of Fern Island, I couldn’t help but feel like the game was missing something. I couldn’t quite figure out what it was, but there was just something a little off about the whole experience. It wasn’t until I was looking through screenshots of the game for this review that it hit me what it was: even though this game is about a witch, there’s not much in the way of magic going on.

I mean, yes, you gradually learn a few spells, and the game starts with the main character, Abrill, falling off her broom and crashing onto the eponymous island. But when right down to it, The Witch of Fern Island isn’t a game about magic. It’s a game about farming and building up your social circle and going on fetch quests and basically just getting into the rhythm of life on Fern Island.

In other words, it’s Harvest Moon. Or Fae Farm. Or Story of Seasons. Or any of the dozens and dozens of other games that allow you to farm and fish and build friendships. There’s not much original to be found here, is what I’m saying.

To be fair to The Witch of Fern Island, it’s still in Early Access, so it’s quite possible that by the time the game is ready for full release, it’ll be substantially more magical. But seeing as the magical elements here are focused around things like changing the weather and removing pests from your crops – as opposed to, say, any of the spells you might find in Hogwarts Legacy – it’s clear that the point of magic on Fern Island is to help you fit in, rather than to do crazy magical stuff.

The problem with this is that the quests here aren’t very interesting. You have to spend a lot of time wandering around, looking for things to do – and when you find them, that often leads to even more wandering, looking for the items you need to complete your fetch quests. The game never figures out a way to make you settle into a fun rhythm of getting quests, solving them, and rushing onto your next one. Instead, the world is too empty to be fun, and the discoveries you make while searching for quests and/or items to help you complete your quests never seem worth the ultimate payoff.

Again, The Witch of Fern Island is still in Early Access, so it’s totally possible that the developers will build on what’s here and turn the game into something worth playing. But that’s certainly not how I’d describe the game at this point in time, so until and unless it gets there, it’s really not worth your money.

Freedom Games provided us with a Witch of Fern Island PC code for review purposes.

Kickstarter Check-In: The Witch of Fern Island

Developer Enjoy Studio has begun a Kickstarter campaign for sandbox adventure RPG The Witch of Fern Island. The game follows a budding witch on the eponymous island as she learns more about the island’s history, inhabitants, and magic. It is being developed for PC and consoles. A PC Early Access release is currently planned for early 2023 with the full release to follow in early 2024.

Players control Abrill, a young girl seeking to become a certified witch by passing her academic internship. Players can customise Abrill’s appearance as well as her home. The game features a calendar and season system, though there is no set ending point. In her role, Abrill can craft potions, learn rituals, affect the weather, and peek into the potential future while helping the island’s residents and learning more about its secrets. The island itself is home to three distinct cultures — Boran, Apatut, and Kuqkwa — while Abrill will also be able to venture into a parallel spirit world called Astra.

The game features its own farming systems, including crops and magical hen-like Cuflows that come in various breeds that can be crossed with each other. Abrill can also find various ingredients and resources for her magic throughout the island. Other activities include fishing, befriending and controlling familiars, photography, researching wildlife, festivals, and more.

The campaign is looking for €15,000 in funding and is set to run until December 8, 2022. Those who pledge at least €16 will receive a digital copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.
