Exploring the Haunting Allure of Black Magic Canyon, Idaho

By admin

Black Magic Canyon is a stunning natural wonder located in Idaho. It is a hidden gem that has become increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts and photographers in recent years. This unique geological formation is situated near the town of Shoshone in southern Idaho. It is known for its striking and intricate rock formations, which resemble something out of a fantasy movie. The canyon gets its name from the dark, volcanic rock that makes up its walls. The canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosive power of wind and water.

This is essentially a basalt slot canyon very similar to places in Zion or Capitol Reef National Parks. I almost want to classify this as a canyoneering route but it is probably more of a hiking classification anyway.

But the crazy looking basalt rock provided plenty of hand and foot holds so I could escape out of virtually any point in the canyon if it came down to it. Most of the basalt found on Earth is produced in just three rock-forming environments oceanic divergent boundaries, oceanic hotspots, and hotspots beneath continents.

The canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosive power of wind and water. The soft volcanic rock was sculpted into various shapes and patterns, creating a labyrinth-like landscape that feels almost otherworldly. Exploring Black Magic Canyon is like stepping into another realm.

SOUTHERN IDAHO

Black Magic Canyon is a roughly 1.5-mile round-trip hike located just north of Shoshone, Idaho. This canyon is actually flooded with water during irrigation season, so you will only be able to hike it from roughly November through March. You can call the Wood River Canal Company for exact dates. I visited the area in February, hoping to hike the Gooding City of Rocks, but as that road was too snowy so I decided to try Black Magic Canyon. The road to Black Magic Canyon wasn't too bad, and looks like it would be fine for low-clearance vehicles. Though it can of course become impassable if wet.

As you can see, the canyon was covered in a light layer of snow while I was there. This made travel slow, as I couldn't always tell what was below the snow I was stepping on. There was a tiny bit of climbing required to get up some sections, but nothing too difficult. I really enjoyed this canyon as it reminded me a bit of the slot canyons in southern Utah. The difference being this canyon had black walls of volcanic rock, instead of the reddish sandstone of southern Utah. I will definitely need to come back some time when there isn't snow to see the rocks in more detail.

As the canyon was covered in snow the first time I visited in February, 2019, I returned the following November to see how it would look dry. It was much easier going the second time being able to clearly see what you were stepping on, and being able to get a better grip on the rocks when you needed to climb. On the second trip I also had the place all to myself.

FYI – The entire canyon is on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land.

As you wander through the narrow passages and towering walls, you will be amazed by the intricate details and textures that surround you. The play of light and shadow on the dark rock creates a mesmerizing effect, making it a paradise for photographers. One of the most famous features of Black Magic Canyon is the Devil's Washboard, a series of parallel ridges and grooves etched into the rock. This natural formation is a favorite among visitors and provides a great opportunity for unique photographs. Other notable formations include arches, caves, and narrow passageways. While the canyon itself is a true natural wonder, it is important to note that some sections can be slippery and treacherous, especially during wet weather. Visitors are advised to exercise caution and wear appropriate footwear when exploring the canyon. Black Magic Canyon is a place of awe-inspiring beauty and wonder. It offers a unique opportunity to experience nature's artistic prowess up close. Whether you are a photographer, hiker, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the great outdoors, a visit to Black Magic Canyon is sure to leave you speechless..

Reviews for "Black Magic Canyon: Surreal Landscapes in Idaho"

1. John - 2/5 - I have to be honest, I was really disappointed with Black Magic Canyon in Idaho. The pictures online made it look so amazing and intriguing, but in person, it fell flat for me. The canyon itself was just a small, narrow gorge with some interesting rock formations, but it wasn't as spectacular as I had imagined. Additionally, the trail leading up to the canyon was poorly maintained and it was difficult to navigate through the overgrown vegetation. Overall, I don't think it was worth the hype and I wouldn't recommend making a special trip to see it.
2. Sarah - 1/5 - I don't understand why Black Magic Canyon is considered a tourist attraction. It was nothing more than a small, unimpressive canyon with a bunch of rocks. The name itself is misleading, as there was nothing magical or captivating about the place. The whole experience was underwhelming and not worth the time or effort it took to get there. I expected something extraordinary based on the reviews and pictures I had seen, but all I got was a feeling of disappointment and regret.
3. David - 2/5 - I had high hopes for Black Magic Canyon, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The rock formations were interesting, but they weren't anything out of the ordinary. The whole canyon felt like a tourist trap, with limited parking options and overcrowded trails. It was difficult to enjoy the scenery with so many people around. Additionally, the trail was not well marked, making it hard to explore and find the best viewpoints. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Black Magic Canyon to anyone looking for an awe-inspiring natural attraction.
