The story could definitely have gone deeper into distrust and paranoia, but then it might have become too much of a "witch trial" movie.
Blaschke works almost exclusively with available natural light, which in addition to bolstering Eggers emphasis on realism, keeps the specter of darkness and evil hanging over the family. The incredible camera-work almost reminds me of Paul Thomas Anderson in There Will Be Blood, with many long takes, often slowly panning or zooming in.

The horror elements of 'The Witch' are surprisingly effective, as are the (low budget, of course) special effects. The film made me feel uncomfortable on a fair few occasions across the 71 minute run time. However, sadly, that's all the positives I have for it.
Its characters aren't strong enough, neither is the convoluted story. As for the acting, it's passable but again not really up to the standard that it alleviates any of the issues that I have with the film unfortunately. I wanted to come away from watching it by saying that I enjoyed it, because I so very nearly did, but I'd be telling porkies if I did.
Kudos for the horror attempt though.
Violence 5/10. A lot of violence is implied but very dark. A girl kills her mother by stabbing her in the head, blood oozes out. A boy has a whole apple pulled out of his mouth. Lots of disturbing imagery and implications. Sex 4/10. Brief nudity of dancing witches. A girl undresses but is only seen nude from behind or from far away.
