Why are Purdue students and alumni called Boilermakers?
Purdue University, in West Lafayette, Indiana, has had winning sports teams since the 19th century, when both our union and the university were young. In 1889, Purdue's football team traveled to Crawfordsville, Indiana, to play Wabash College, whom they defeated 18-4.
Wabash students and the people of Crawfordsville were devastated by the defeat. According to one correspondent from the era, the town began referring to the Purdue team as "a great big burly gang of corn-huskers," "rail-splitters," "foundry molders," and "log-haulers." One newspaper reporter wrote this line: "A blacksmith they had would come into the Wabash boys like a mogul engine and the more they choked him the happier he seemed to be."
Over the next few years, Purdue's reputation did not dim, and when their team gave Wabash College a 44-0 drubbing in 1891, the local press wrote wildly about the carnage. One sports writer for the Daily Argus headlined his story "Slaughter of Innocents," with the line under that reading, "Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers from Purdue."
By the next football season, the name had stuck. Ever since, Purdue's teams have been known as the Boilermakers, and the school's mascot is now the Boilermaker Special, a vehicle outfitted to look like the 19th century steam engines that Boilermakers built throughout the country.
What about that widely held view that those early teams actually used burly Boilermakers from the local railroad shops? Unfounded. West Lafayette's Monon railroad shops were not built until 1895, several years after the name was already in use.
One fact that may have contributed to public acceptance of the Boilermaker nickname is that Purdue's engineering students pursued a hands-on education, often working directly with the tools. From 1891 to 1897, they kept a fully operational steam locomotive, The Schenectady, on hand for research. Real boilermakers and blacksmiths would have felt right at home in this university lab.

How Purdue Boilermakers Got Its Name
Since its opening in 1869, Purdue University has carried on the legacy of being a world-renowned institution that inspires students to leave a positive mark on society. Neil Armstrong, Eugene Cernan, Drew Brees, and several Purdue alumni are all proud to call themselves a ‘Boilermaker’. Yet, many people have no idea where this term comes from.
Before the term ‘Boilermaker’, sports teams that represented the university had been referred to as ‘corn huskers, ‘blacksmiths’, or ‘cornfield sailors’. The university was known for educating students studying agriculture and the mechanical arts, hence why the football team lacked exquisite talent and only consisted of eleven players. It was not until 1891 that Purdue University’s football team made a name for itself, after demolishing Wabash College 44-0. Wabash College was a powerhouse in college football at the time, so tensions were high after being swept by an underdeveloped team. The Daily Argus-News fired out the post-game article with the headline, “Wabash Snowed Completely Under by the Burly Boiler Makers From Purdue.” Following the buzz behind the term ‘Boiler Makers’, the institution took the term with open arms and allowed it to represent the university and its students.
Several meanings have been acquired since this initial reference to the university. People made jokes that the athletes from Purdue were recruited from the rail yards and other comments related to working on the railways. All humor aside, Purdue University earned its place as the world leader in engineering research and development. The institution provided students with hands-on opportunities to foster knowledge and utilize high-end equipment. As the program was growing, Purdue purchased a fully operational steam locomotive, known as the Schenectady. Purdue University was widely-known for their possession of the locomotive, which coined their mascot as the Boilermaker Special.
The Boilermaker Special has been four decades in the making since the original model, which was a mini-locomotive mounted atop a vehicle frame and branded with the university’s logo. Currently, the Boilermaker Special VIII is acclaimed by Boilermakers as the “world’s largest, fastest, heaviest, and loudest collegiate mascot.” Our mascot can be spotted giving fans a ride around campus on game days, leading the team across the field, or at local festivities in the community. Original versus Current Versions of the Boilermaker Special and Purdue Pete
Another beloved mascot that represents the university is Purdue Pete! A recent article announced that Pete was voted the creepiest and second worst mascot in the NCAA, but Boilermaker fans strongly disagree! Purdue Pete has undergone five makeovers since his birth in 1940. California artist Art Evans was hired by the University Bookstore to craft a logo that represented a life-like boilermaker tradesman. This little figure was found on clothing items, Purdue memorabilia, and much more. On September 28, 1956 at a pep rally an ambitious mechanical engineering student took the liberty of dressing in foam rubber padding, football shoulder pads, long black pants, sweater with a P, and a papier-mâché head. The student had help from his fellow classmates to take Purdue Pete off the page and become a real human mascot. Over the years, the bulky 36 pound papier-mâché head has been traded in for a 10 pound head made of composite materials that allows Pete to cheer on the Boilermakers and rally the fans no matter the circumstance. Purdue Pete is an icon on Purdue University's campus greeting incoming students and their families, taking photos with fans at sporting events, and capturing the Boilermaker spirit!
As I am nearing the end of my junior year and closing another chapter on my time here at Purdue University, I am proud to call myself a Boilermaker! Purdue University was my first choice when deciding to further my education and pursue a degree in Public Relations and Strategic Communications. My family consists of a long line of Boilermakers so I knew I wanted to carry on the tradition! The abundance of student organizations that I have been a part of has allowed me to implement the materials learned in the classroom into my everyday life and make a true difference in the community alongside my classmates and esteemed professors. Boilers mascot
Everyone has been called names at some point in their life. Many names, while hurtful at the time, eventually are forgotten. The sad part about name-calling is that it usually comes from someone who is jealous or feels inferior to another. Every once in a while, a nickname will stick.
The Purdue Boilermakers are a group of people who take pride in that name. The sports teams are perennially talented and competitive, and every student who wears the Black-and-Gold of this school wears it with pride. Where did the Boilermakers get that moniker? Why are the colors black and gold? To answer these questions, we will need to take a trip back in time.
The Midwestern United States was a hotbed of college football in the late 1800s. Indiana, in particular, had three powerhouse schools that dominated the area in DePauw University, Wabash College and Butler University. There was another small school in Indiana that was slower to field a football team, but would end up being an important one. Purdue’s first team came together in 1887 and managed to play one game that year. It was an embarrassing 48-6 loss at Butler. The very next year, the team did not even play a single game. Those woeful beginnings would soon turn around.
In that first year of football, the team needed to pick colors to wear on game day to distinguish the team. The powerhouse of the day, Princeton, was known for their black and yellow jerseys, so it came as no surprise that the team considered their colors. They eventually settled on those colors, except with the slight difference of exchanging the yellow for a more distinguished gold. That they would choose Princeton’s colors would be a bit of foreshadowing for the next few years.
In 1891, Knowlton Ames was hired to coach the mediocre Purdue University football team. A graduate of Princeton, he had played on their dominant squad during his collegiate career and immediately brought that success along with him. Arguably the best coach in Purdue football history, he is the only coach to go undefeated throughout his tenure as the coach in West Lafayette, and he is the man responsible for training the team that brought the future Purdue identity home.
Many names are tossed around at the teams that are better than the home team, and in 1891, one certain name stuck to the Purdue football squad. In the late 1800’s, the newspapers, being considerably more tied to the hometown squads, joined in the name-calling. In one Crawfordsville newspaper on November 1, 1891 in an effort to defend their hometown Wabash College, the writer lashed out at the “Boiler Makers from Purdue.” These “Boiler Makers” had just handed Wabash a 44-0 drubbing on the football field, and returned home where the name stuck.
Among all of the names handed to that dominant football team, why did this one stay? It stuck because it certainly fit. Being a primarily engineering college at the time, it was a school for mostly hard-working class people instead of the highborn that normally attended such institutions as Wabash. Along with that, the school had just purchased a train engine to use to teach the students about locomotive engineering.
The label that we Purdue students use proudly to identify ourselves was taken from being an “insult” and made an image of pride in where we come from and what we study. We should be even more proud of where we attend and the education we have received.
