Top 15 greatest rap songs of all time: Number 15

From the night that Tyler, The Creator’s IGOR hit streaming services on May 17, 2019, until the moment that I am writing this article, “NEW MAGIC WAND” has been perpetually running through my earbuds and my mind.

“NEW MAGIC WAND” thrives off its immediacy and its several compositional switches. It functions as receiving a gift box and there are about eight different presents in there, all of which are awesome.

Jerrod Carmichael, a stand-up comedian and television star, preludes the track with an emblematic statement, “Sometimes, you gotta close a door to open a window,” a metaphor for not dwelling on the past. Carmichael can barely even finish the word “window” before the buzzing bass and the drums that could have been recorded from a street musician outside Target Center bust in, as Tyler tries to close the proverbial door of his partner’s memories with their ex as quickly as possible.

Tyler is going through a rough patch in a relationship on “NEW MAGIC WAND,” and he is holding on for dear life and trying to prevent his significant other from returning back to their old ways. The immediacy of the song’s instrumental manifests itself in the impatience Tyler has for this person trying to leave, begging with them repeatedly, “Please don’t leave me,” as if he’s a wizard with his “magic wand” trying to put them under a love spell but is failing miserably.

Not getting his way right away, things turn ugly towards the end of the song and since his lover won’t close the door, Tyler decides to end things off with this person and tries to vanquish any remanants of a person he once held close. The narrative that plays out fits into the conceptual nature of IGOR nicely as a turning point in this relationship that plays out throughout the 11 other tracks on the chart-topping project.

Also, despite the run time being only around three minutes and change, there’s mood switches that make the song run longer than the actual time suggests. The rattling drums are constant and the song builds the Igor character into this mess trying to hold on by ramping up the magnitude of the song by adding background vocals courtesy of Santigold before Tyler has an intense freak out moment.

The instrumental fades to become a litle bit quieter, acting as the calm eye of the storm that is swirling around Igor. It’s a cool down sonic moment sandwiched in between two aggressive verses, but the bridge might be even more psychotic than the aggression on either side, threatening to kill both his partner and their ex.

“NEW MAGIC WAND” draws to a close with a ton of momentum hot off the heels of a stunning final verse from Tyler with his admittance that he wants to share last names with this person but can’t because he’s the other one. He then uses his “magic wand” to make this person disappear out of his life to bring the three minute emotional roller coaster ride to its end while all the passengers are trying to sort out what happened on the ride.

Tyler, The Creator has really come into his own as an emotional songwriter tackling issues such as love and relationships in ways that few others in hip hop, or any other genre, have done before. His artistic trajectory has gone up steadily since his beginnings as an artist whose value lied in shock value during the Odd Future years, and songs like “NEW MAGIC WAND” have Tyler’s fans salivating for more.

The Story of IGOR and its Emotions

Matéo Hunter, Reporter
December 23, 2022

As I have grown to understand my emotions, I’ve realized the different ways people express feelings. Frequently I rely on music and other forms of art as distractions to my own expressions, though IGOR made me think about them. IGOR, the 2019 album by Tyler Okonma (Tyler, The Creator), helped change my perspective on the intense emotions of love, anger, loss, and acceptance. Through clever imagery and metaphors, it felt as if Tyler was speaking directly to me on my path to emotional maturity.
IGOR begins the story with a new kind of love, one that Tyler describes as his love interest making his “earfquake.” “I THINK” is a song that shows his long, grueling process of falling in love. The chorus, “I think I’m falling in love / this time I think it’s for real,” explains the theme and why it is so hard for Tyler to love. Even the uncertain and gloomy feeling of the key, D sharp minor, reinforces this process.
The first interlude’s title “EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING” describes exactly what Tyler is feeling. He was uncertain about falling in love, though ended up in the same situation he was trying to avoid. He soon realizes that the person he loves is now after another in the song “RUNNING OUT OF TIME.” The lyrics, “Are you livin’ in pretend?”, begins the statements of denial in the album.
Songs like “NEW MAGIC WAND” describe exactly how moments of anger often feel with their harsh bassline and cadence. This song is a turning point in the album and accurately displays the changes within the stages of grief. From denial to anger, he is tired of not being loved by someone he loves. The hook repeats “Like magic, like magic, like magic, gone / New magic, new magic, new magic, wand,” suggesting he will make his lover’s new interest disappear, something that a magic wand could do.
For a brief amount of time in the album, Tyler goes back to his sweet-loving phase with the song “PUPPET.” This track is again described exactly by its title. Tyler is his lover’s puppet, he wants to be with them and exclaims he will do anything to do so. This newly-surfaced, light-hearted feeling portrays the stage of bargaining, though it does not last long. The song ends with the lyrics, “But at some point, you come to your senses.”
He continues the story with a sense of loss in the song “WHAT’S GOOD.” Tyler fully realizes that the relationship between them will not work out, though he has not accepted this fate yet. The song is in retribution for what they did to his emotions. It mixes emotions of anger and pain that are generated in his expressions of loss.
The emotions of the album appear to end with the song, “GONE, GONE / THANK YOU.” With a positive, upbeat feeling that exemplifies the freedom of acceptance, Tyler seems to have gotten rid of his feelings in this two-part song. The first part describes how happy he is to be done with the torture of this relationship. He hopes for the best for his ex-lover and feels that his love is truly gone. The second part of the song takes a different stance on love overall. He is thankful for the entirety of the experience though never wants to go through it again. The simple chorus of this part provides a satisfying ending for the listener and Tyler’s emotions, “Thank you for the love, thank you for the joy / But I will never want to fall in love again.”
Convincing listeners that the story was finished, the final song on the album shows Tyler falling back into his old habits. “ARE WE STILL FRIENDS” is a beautiful, yet repetitive song that has Tyler pleading to be in any type of relationship with his lover. The song ends with a dirty synthesizer playing only B flat. The significance of this note is that the album’s start begins with E flat on that same synthesizer. In both classical and modern music, B flat is known to resolve or in effect “sound good” transitioning to E flat, meaning that the entire album is not only a lyrical but a musical loop of emotions.
The eternal loop of the entire album aids in showing what it means to be in a cycle of unrequited love and how to break that cycle of suffering. It is a lesson for Tyler and his listeners about what not to do.

Top 10 Tyler, the Creator Songs

It's been less than a week since Tyler, the Creator released his new album CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST, and already music critics are hailing it as a contender for the Album of the Year. It feels like yesterday when IGOR, Tyler's Grammy-winning record from 2019, made the same waves during that summer, too. Tyler's got a penchant for adorning the hot weather with some chill hits.

But if you really know Tyler, you know he's much more than a pastel-clad artist who only shows his face during the warmer months. Between his founding member status in Odd Future, deep involvement in critically-acclaimed albums like Earl Sweatshirt's Earl and Frank Ocean's Channel Orange, and taste for fashion through his clothing lines Golf Wang and Golf le Fleur, Tyler's definitely earned the "Creator" part of his stage name. He's constantly making things, and the things he makes are always quality.

When it comes to his musical evolution, Tyler's come a long way. He started as a gravelly rapper unafraid to be crude in his tracks. His recent songs feature more experimental production and smoother vocals - some may say his tracks reflect an air of opulence and luxury. Whichever era of Tyler you're drawn to, there are standout tracks to be found in both his older and newer albums.

To celebrate Tyler's musical journey and success with his recent album, we thought we'd give our top 10 picks for Tyler, the Creator songs. We're also including songs from CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST on this list. Here are our faves!

So, if you're a braiding expert, the Ampro Shine n Jam Magic Fingers is the perfect tool to take your skills to the next level..

10. "See You Again (feat. Kali Uchis)"

Coming off his 2017 album Flower Boy, we have "See You Again." This dreamy track features vocals from Kali Uchis, who also appeared on Tyler's previous album, Cherry Bomb. With lyrics like "Wonder if you look both ways when you cross my mind" and "Can I get a kiss? And can you make it last forever?" this song is sure to put you in a romantic mood.

Tyler claims "See You Again" is his favorite song from Flower Boy. With songs like this one and tranquil tracks like "Boredom" and "Where This Flower Blooms," it's no wonder Flower Boy was certified Gold by the RIAA in 2018.

"See You Again," as well as all of Flower Boy, began Tyler's transition into a more flowy, graceful sound. Many believe Flower Boy is the album where Tyler came out as bisexual, as the lyrics from the song "Garden Shed" and the more effiminate tones in Flower Boy hint at a new maturity from Tyler - as if to suggest the artist is blooming into his true inner self.

Reviews for "Ampro shine n jam magic fingers: The Secret Weapon for Braiding Experts"

1. David - 1 star
I bought the Ampro shine n jam magic fingers for braiding experts thinking it would make my hair braiding experience easier. However, I was extremely disappointed with this product. The consistency of the gel is incredibly sticky and thick, making it difficult to apply evenly to my hair. It also left a residue that looked greasy and unappealing. Additionally, the hold was weak and my braids unraveled within a few hours. I would not recommend this product for anyone looking for an effective braiding gel.
2. Sarah - 2 stars
I was not impressed with the Ampro shine n jam magic fingers for braiding experts. While it did provide some shine to my braids, it failed to deliver on its promise of a long-lasting hold. My braids started fraying and unraveling within hours of styling them with this gel. Furthermore, the consistency of the gel was too thick and sticky, making it difficult to evenly distribute through my hair. Overall, I found it to be a subpar product and will not be repurchasing it in the future.
3. Jessica - 2 stars
As someone who frequently braids their hair, I was excited to try the Ampro shine n jam magic fingers for braiding experts. However, it did not live up to my expectations. The gel was difficult to work with due to its thick consistency and sticky texture. It also left my hair looking greasy and weighed down, which was not the look I was going for. Additionally, the hold was weak and my braids quickly unraveled. I would not recommend this product to other braiding enthusiasts as there are much better alternatives available.
