The Wutx fire is an incident that occurred in a small town called Wutx, located in the western part of the country. The fire broke out on the evening of July 15th and quickly engulfed several buildings in the town center. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that it may have started in a residential building. High winds and dry weather conditions quickly spread the flames to nearby structures, creating a rapidly escalating situation. Local firefighters were alerted to the fire within minutes, and several fire engines were dispatched to the scene. However, their efforts to contain the fire were hindered by the fast-moving flames and limited water supply.
It was the second-largest wildfire of the 2007 California wildfire season, burning 197,990 acres, destroying 1,650 structures, and claiming the lives of two civilians.
Residents who stayed in Ramona despite the evacuation order and those who returned later in the week will remember a community that came together, and the nonprofit and governmental entities that were on hand to offer support in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in the months that followed. Cal Fire issued updates about the fire as events were taking place, and information about the Poomacha fire that later combined with the Witch fire was also included.
However, their efforts to contain the fire were hindered by the fast-moving flames and limited water supply. As the fire raged on, neighboring towns were called in to assist with the firefighting efforts. Additional fire engines, as well as aerial support, were brought in to help battle the blaze.
In Memoriam: Past President Michael P. Wutz (1942 – 2022)
FASNY Past President Michael P. Wutz, 80, of Williamsville passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022. Throughout his exceptional career as a firefighter, Michael was involved in many State and local firefighter organizations.
He served on the Scholarship and Fire Service Community Achievements Award Committees for FASNY. He served as a Vice President from 2002-2006 and President from 2006-2008. He served the FASNY Foundation as a Director for six years and was the Grants Committee Chairman.
Michael also was a part of Western New York’s Volunteer Firemen’s Association, serving as its President in 1977. He held various offices with the Erie County Volunteer Firemen’s Association and the Erie County Fire Chiefs Association. In 2018, he was presented with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
Michael joined Hutchinson Hose Co. in May 1964, serving as an active firefighter for 40 years. During his time at the company, he served as the Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary, Legislative Chairman, Vice President and President. He also served the Williamsville Fire Department as Captain, EMS Squad Captain and Assistant Chief.
He was appointed to the New York State Fire Advisory Board and served that Board for eight years. He also served on the Erie County Fire Advisory Board for four years. A native to Williamsville, where he was born, raised and lived out his life, Michael attended Williamsville Central, which is now Williamsville South High School. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Petcu; his grandson, Nicholas Petcu; and his brother, Thomas Wutz.
Though the town was no longer in danger from the fire by Tuesday, Oct. 23, the reason given for not allowing residents to return was the fact that Ramona Municipal Water District was unable to supply running water. Water service was restored two days after the town was reopened to residents.
Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighters, the fire continued to spread and consume more buildings. By the early morning hours, a large portion of the town center had been reduced to ashes. The fire finally came under control later that day, thanks to the joint efforts of the firefighters. However, the damage was already extensive, and countless families were left homeless and devastated. In the aftermath of the fire, the community rallied together to provide support and assistance to those affected. Emergency shelters were set up to provide temporary housing, and local organizations organized donation drives to collect essential items for the victims. The Wutx fire serves as a tragic reminder of the destructive power of fires and the importance of fire safety measures.
