The witch is in our sign. For centuries, witches have fascinated and intrigued people around the world. Their association with magic, spells, and supernatural powers have sparked countless stories, legends, and myths. While their history is often shrouded in mystery, some cultures and beliefs consider witches to be an intrinsic part of their collective identity. In many ancient civilizations, witches were revered as powerful sorceresses or healers, with their abilities to communicate with spirits and harness the forces of nature. In some societies, witches were even seen as mediators between the mortal and spiritual realms, playing a vital role in rituals and ceremonies.

In some societies, witches were even seen as mediators between the mortal and spiritual realms, playing a vital role in rituals and ceremonies. Over time, however, the perception of witches changed drastically. The rise of Christianity brought with it a demonization of witchcraft and a wave of witch hunts across Europe and America.

How to Use Astrology to Figure Out What Kind of Witch You Are

For many new witches, identifying the “type” of witchcraft you practice is a big issue. Though witchcraft defies labels in many ways, it can be helpful to understand existing traditions and be able to name the activities and beliefs you engage in. I wrote about this in my most popular post of all time, 5 Steps to Figure Out What Kind of Witch You Are. In that post, one of the important steps I outline is to read your own astrological natal chart to find insights into the magick and types of witchcraft you may be drawn to explore.

Astrology can be a daunting field to dive into and there are so many books out there on the subject that it’s hard to know where to begin or how to understand in what ways astrology applies to you. (One of my favorite books on the subject is Llewellyn’s Complete Book of Astrology which is quite comprehensive, or Intuitive Astrology.) That’s why I’m going to break it down to help you use your personal astrology to figure out what kind of witch you are! This exercise isn’t just for newbie witches either; if you are more advanced, you may find new and intriguing insights into your magickal and spiritual practice in your natal chart.

For the purposes of this post, we are going to focus on the sun, moon and rising signs, (also known as the ascendant). There are over 1,700 possible combinations just of these three signs, let alone the rest of your natal chart, and reading these three together, holistically, provides a deeper understanding.

Astrology is about finding commonalities and then exploring the diverse and seemingly endless combinations of those common threads.

What Are Your Sun, Moon and Rising Signs?

To start us off, let’s answer this simple question. When asked what our “sign” is, most of us respond with our sun sign. This is the easiest sign to calculate and the one most people readily know.

Your sun sign is literally the astrological sign through which the sun was passing when you were born. The year is divided into 12 approximately equal sections, one for the sun in each sign. This is because it takes one year for the sun to pass through all 12 astrological signs, so you can see why it is simple to calculate. The sun sign represents your basic personality and ego.

Your moon sign is the sign through which the moon was passing when you were born. It takes the moon approximately 29 days to pass through all 12 astrological signs, or one full lunar cycle from new moon to full moon and back to new moon again. The moon sign represents your emotional self, how you handle, process and express emotions, as well as any psychic abilities you may have. This sign is fairly simple to calculate, but if the moon moved from one sign to the next on the day you were born, (which it does about every two and a half days), you will need to know the exact time of your birth in order to accurately calculate your moon sign.

Your rising or ascendant sign is the sign that was on the Eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The rising sign represents your outward self, the personality that you reflect to others. Oftentimes, other people may guess that your rising sign is your sun sign, because it represents the version of you they are most familiar with. It is very important to know the exact time of your birth in order to accurately calculate your rising sign.

If you do not know the exact time of your birth, I would recommend just reading for your sun and moon signs; these two signs alone will still give you deep insight.

Thousands of individuals, mainly women, were accused and persecuted for allegedly practicing witchcraft. The image of the witch transformed from one of power and wisdom to that of evil and dark forces. Despite their vilification, witches have managed to maintain a significant presence in popular culture and folklore. From the iconic witches of "Macbeth" and "The Wizard of Oz" to the contemporary witchcraft portrayed in shows like "Charmed" and "American Horror Story: Coven," the archetype of the witch continues to capture our imagination. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in witchcraft and the occult. The rise of modern witchcraft movements, such as Wicca and Paganism, has demonstrated a reclaiming of the witch identity and a rejection of the negative stereotypes associated with it. Many people seek to connect with the natural world, explore spirituality, and tap into feminine power through witchcraft practices. Today, witches and their symbols have become more mainstream and embraced by popular culture. The image of the witch can be seen on clothing, jewelry, and even in home decor. The pentacle, broomstick, and black cat have become icons associated with witchcraft and are widely recognized symbols. The witch is more than just a mythical figure; it encompasses a deep and complex history that resonates with various cultures and belief systems. Whether viewed as a powerful sorceress or a symbol of rebellion and female empowerment, the witch continues to hold a prominent place in our society's collective consciousness.
