Man, this such a strange, insane comic. The Cosmic Ghost Rider, a.k.a. Space Punisher, is weird in all the best ways. In fact, this is so bizarre it’s hard to believe that Marvel is publishing it. Donny Cates and Dylan Burnett are swinging for the fences with this book and it’s working, for sure. We love how crazy bananas it is. We love how frantic and energetic Burnett’s art is. We love the time-travel story about baby murder (in a good way). We seriously love everything about this comic and you are cheating yourself if you skip it. Marvel is letting these guys cut loose and we should all support that.
The story in this first Avengers arc can feel a bit crowded, but this creative team handles it perfectly and manages to give every character a vital role. Instead of just putting Cap in a new situation and moving forward like all that stuff with Hydra never happened, this team slows things down and delves into the aftermath.

BATMAN #50

You may have heard by this point, but Batman and Catwoman do not get married in this issue. Yeah, it says “The Wedding” in big letters on the cover, but there is no wedding. Now, some folks will probably be angry about that and feel cheated, but you should know that Batman #50 is a really, really great comic book. If you’ve been following Tom King’s run on this title, the events of this issue make sense. They’ll make your heart hurt, for sure, but they make sense.
The best monthly comic books leave you constantly wondering, “Where are they going to go from here?!” and Batman #50 certainly does that. Plus, it’s overflowing with gorgeous artwork from Mikel Janin, Jim Lee, Mitch Gerads, Becky freaking Cloonan, Frank Miller, and many, many more. Honestly, the art and pinups in this book make it worth the cover price, even if you are pissed off that there’s no “I do” at the end. Where does Batman go from here? I don’t know and that’s pretty damn exciting.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #1

Captain America #1 is a fresh start with a superstar creative team. If you think that means that Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Francis Yu just ignore everything that came before this, you’d be dead wrong. This story is a direct reaction to the events of Secret Empire. Instead of just putting Cap in a new situation and moving forward like all that stuff with Hydra never happened, this team slows things down and delves into the aftermath. The country is broken and its people look at Captain America differently. There’s a sense of distrust, of hesitation and caution. It makes for a very compelling read and we’re definitely interested to see where these guys take this title. Great writing, beautiful art, and some heady issues, Captain America #1 is a winner all around.

If you are looking for unbridled, high-octane superhero action, Avengers is your comic book. It never slows down and the stakes just keep getting bigger and bigger. The team is divided and spread across the globe (and the universe), doing battle with giant space gods while trying to piece together the mystery of this massive attack on Earth. Paco Medina and Ed McGuinness make a great pair; their styles complement each other and they are both superb storytellers. The story in this first Avengers arc can feel a bit crowded, but this creative team handles it perfectly and manages to give every character a vital role. Fun stuff through and through.

This could possibly be our new favorite series. Rick Remender and Bengal have crafted a stunning crime story about family, loss, and revenge that you simply must read. With each issue, the layers are peeled back and it becomes more and more clear that what once seemed like a fairly straightforward action thriller is a deeply rooted tale with some serious weight. Bengal is absolutely amazing and Rus Wooton is an unparalleled letterer. Seriously, if you see Rus Wooton’s name on a comic book, you know it’s going to be quality. Everything about this comic is fantastic and a step above the rest of the books on the stands. We’re only halfway through the year, but we’re betting this will be on everyone’s Best of 2018 list. It’s just that damn good.
