Rabi and the Magical Island Paradise Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Rabi. He lived in a small village near the sea. Rabi was curious and adventurous, always yearning for excitement and new experiences. One day, while exploring the beach, Rabi stumbled upon a strange, shimmering seashell. As he picked it up, a blinding light engulfed him, and when it subsided, he found himself standing on a beautiful, lush island. Rabi couldn't believe his eyes.

Rabi couldn't believe his eyes. It was like stepping into a magical paradise. Palm trees swayed gently in the breeze, flowers of vibrant colors dotted the landscape, and crystal-clear water beckoned playfully.

The magic island of Ambrym

The magic island of Ambrym

Having decided not to go any further north up the island chain, we set sail for the central island of Ambrym. This island has a lot to offer – 2 active volcano’s glowing the evening sky, the weird and wonderful Rom dance, master wood carver’s and black magic – quite a combo for kiwi’s on tour J

Ambrym owes its name to Captain Cook who anchored off the island in 1774. He received the warmest welcome possible which in these parts is being gifted a large yam – the staple and most revered vegetable of Vanuatu! When handing over the yam, the locals said “hamb rim” which translated means “here is a yam” – Cook recorded that as “Ambrym” and went on drawing charts of the area and the rest is history…..

The small inland village of Fanla is famous for celebrating the Rom dance in mid July and reportedly host a 2 day festival each year. Upon arrival a few days before it was due to start we heard that there was a “rumour” that the festival was cancelled this year. No-one however could say for sure and we knew other yachts who wanted to attend, so we decided to hike up into the hills to Fanla and find out what was going on.

Upon receiving directions of where to go (only took a wrong turn once which unfortunately meant climbing the steepest hill twice) – we were advised to wait at the first clearing in the village and ask someone to take us to the High Chief Bong. We smiled to ourselves and remembered in Pentecost arriving in Homo Bay and being taken to meet Chief Willie (this is all true) – what will the next Chief be called we wonder? Anywhoo – Chief Bong turned out to be a delightful elderly man – very powerful sorcerer they say – spoke no English – and took quite a shine to Carl.

Chief Bong had reconsidered and decided they would do a one day event – in three days time. As we have mentioned before – pigs – and their tusks particularly are extremely valuable in Vanuatu – a sign of great wealth and status – and we had never seen as many tusks on one man as Chief Bong had on the day.

On the day we had 9 boats in the anchorage and an excited bunch of cruisers keen to see what Fanla and Rom dancing was all about. The festivities took place in the “nassouri” a clearing behind the village where only the guests (us) and men of the village were allowed to be. The whole village turned out to watch, but women and children lined the “fence-line” and watched from the side-lines. There are drums throughout all of Vanuatu, but only on Ambrym are these slit drums - known as “Tam Tams” so large, ornately carved and uniquely playing in a vertical position. All other drums lie horizontally. Tam Tams are only played for the Rom dance and you can see them in the background below – it’s the very large coloured vertical “slit drum”.

They put together quite a programme for the day –starting with the village elders performing a “welcome dance”.

If your hotel budget is rather more limited, you will find plenty of hotels ranging in price from mid-range to cheap. There is an excellent choice of three-star hotels which are good value for the standard and service they offer. Rates for double rooms range from BD25-BD32 ($66-$93) in the peak season. Many of these hotels are centrally located in Manama; a real “nest” seems to be the area between Exhibition Avenue and King Faisal Highway.
Rabi and the magical island paradise

The island was filled with a sense of tranquility and serenity, a haven away from the busy world. As Rabi explored further, he discovered that the island was not only visually stunning but also teeming with fascinating creatures. Colorful birds chirped overhead, and friendly dolphins danced in the sparkling waves. Rabi felt a connection with nature like never before, as if the island had opened his eyes to a whole new world. The island was not only a feast for the senses but also a place of incredible adventures. Rabi stumbled upon hidden caves, where he discovered ancient treasures and hoards of gold. He climbed towering cliffs, feeling the rush of adrenaline as he reached the top and gazed out at the breathtaking view. Rabi swam with sharks and explored underwater coral reefs, encountering incredible marine life. Despite the island's beauty and marvels, Rabi eventually yearned to return home. He missed his family, friends, and the familiar sights and sounds of his village. With a heavy heart, Rabi bid farewell to the magical island paradise, but he knew that the memories and lessons he gained would stay with him forever. In the end, Rabi's adventure on the magical island taught him to appreciate the wonders of nature, embrace new experiences, and cherish the love and connections he had back home. And although the island was no longer accessible to him, Rabi became an advocate for preserving and protecting the natural world, determined to share its beauty with others. I was really disappointed with "Rabi and the magical island paradise." The storyline was weak and predictable, and the characters felt one-dimensional. I couldn't connect with any of them and didn't care about their journey. Additionally, the animation was choppy and poorly executed. Overall, the movie lacked the magic and charm that I was expecting and left me feeling underwhelmed.

I found "Rabi and the magical island paradise" to be a complete waste of time. The dialogue was cringeworthy and filled with cliches. The plot was nonsensical and nonsensical; it felt like the writers threw in random ideas without any coherence. Furthermore, the animation was subpar, with poorly rendered characters and jerky movements. I couldn't wait for the movie to end and would not recommend it to anyone.
3. Sarah - 2 stars
I had high hopes for "Rabi and the magical island paradise," but it fell flat for me. The story lacked depth and originality, and the characters were forgettable. The movie seemed to borrow heavily from other popular animated films without bringing anything new to the table. The animation, although colorful, was not up to par with other films in the genre. I was left feeling unimpressed and wishing I had chosen a different movie to watch.
