My grandson (4 yo) decided to 'decorate' his room then moved onto the hallway and brilliantly decided to have the livingroom walls match. Using black magic marker, he made wonderful drawings of trees, flowers, smiley faces, balloons, and other really happy pictures. He was so proud that he had done such a thorough job. His Mom came in from cleaning the garage and discovered the art museum - called big sister out of her room to show her what G had done while sister was NOT watching him, She called her husband in saying DO NOT punish him. He knew it had to be bad. He was smart enough to take a walking tour movie of the scene as my daughter cleaned the walls. She used a Magic Eraser and in less than an hour there were no traces of the pop-up art show, one totally bummed little boy that had been so proud of his decorating gift to his family, one punished older sister, and one 'disappointed in you' dad that said he wasn't going to punish G since he didn't know it was wrong but expected him to ask next time if it would be ok. I think it would have made a great commercial.

Since hitting the market more than a decade ago, the erasers have rounded up a consumer base that swears by the magic. But the secret behind the material that makes up the scrubbers, melamine foam—the same stuff that’s widely used as an acoustic insulator in recording studios—is less magic and more simple chemistry.
Melamine
On its own, melamine is just an organic base in the form of white crystals. But when combined with other compounds, it can transform into a plush foam—the Magic Eraser—with a sandpaper-like microscopic texture. You can use it to scrub off sticky dirt and scum from all kinds of surfaces; just avoid using it on delicate or glossy exteriors. Melamine’s high nitrogen content also makes it a useful flame retardant and fertilizer. In 2008, Chinese fraudsters used melamine to make milk and infant formula appear to have a higher protein content, killing six babies and making nearly 300,000 others sick. Two of the perpetrators were executed.
Formaldehyde
This stuff is best known as the smelly liquid that’s used to preserve dead animals for decades and possibly forever. By itself, formaldehyde can be dangerous and sometimes lethal—irritating the skin, corroding internal tissue, and even causing cancer. But if you mix it with melamine, the result is a tough resin in which those toxic effects are neutralized. High tensile strength makes the resin a suitable material for dinnerware and countertops. Force gas bubbles to form in the resin during the manufacturing process and you end up with Mr. Clean’s melamine foam.
Sodium Bisulfite
Alone, this stuff has antimicrobial properties; it’s excellent as a preservative for winemaking. Here, it can help boost resin production, but it’s best used sparingly—sulfite-modified foams are less stable and can emit formaldehyde under certain conditions.
Water
Procter & Gamble says the key to the Magic Eraser’s stain-fighting properties is in its “water-activated microscrubbers.” But there’s nothing water-activated about it—the eraser can be used dry as well as wet, with little difference in the result. Water likely makes it easier for dirt to cling to the eraser, though—the same way you might wet a paper towel before wiping down a wall or table.

1. Jennifer - 2 stars - I was so excited when I heard about the Practical Magic sequel promo, but I was left extremely disappointed. The teaser trailer gave away way too much of the plot and left no intrigue to watch the actual movie. It felt like everything was already spoiled in those few minutes. Additionally, the acting seemed forced and lacked the magic that made the original film so great. Overall, I was not impressed and felt let down by this promo.
2. Mark - 1 star - I found the Practical Magic sequel promo to be completely unnecessary. The original film was a cult classic and had a perfect ending that didn't require any continuation. This promo feels like they are just trying to cash in on the success of the first movie without any real substance. The storyline seems weak and doesn't hold up to the original. I'll definitely pass on watching this sequel based on what I saw in the promo.
