ORLANDO - During NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, the league made it official that there would be an in-season tournament in 2023-24. Much like what we see in international competition (Examples being the Olympics and FIBA World Cup), this tournament will include group play and knockout rounds. The Orlando Magic are in East Group C along with the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls.

The Celtics made one of the league’s splashier moves this offseason when they acquired Kristaps Porzingis and draft capital as part of a three-team deal. Marcus Smart, Boston’s longest-tenured player the last few years, was shipped to the Memphis Grizzlies in the trade, while Tyus Jones landed with the Washington Wizards.

Last season, the Magic were one of the few teams that had success in the regular season against the Celtics. Orlando won three of the four meetings.
The big key, overall, for the Magic was their defense. In the four games combined, Orlando held Boston to 42 percent overall shooting from the field and 32.3 percent from 3-point range. The Celtics were unable to crack 110 points in their three losses to the Magic and were held under 100 points in two of them. Their 106.3 scoring average against Orlando was 11 points lower than their season average.
Another big factor was the 3-point shooting. Although Boston took nearly 16 more shots from beyond the arc on average in the season series, Orlando shot it six percent better (38.2 percent to 32.3 percent).
Paolo Banchero, who was ultimately named the league’s Rookie of the Year, had a few of his top performances against the Celtics. He scored 20-plus points in all four of the meetings, including on Dec. 18 in Boston when he erupted for 31 points, which was his second highest scoring output in his rookie campaign.
“I feel really confident with my 3-point shot,” the 6-foot-10, 255-pounder said after knocking down six of his seven attempts from long distance in that game. “Just putting in a ton of work, trying to get that shot right, get my touch from out there right. Obviously, I’m not going to shoot six for seven every game, but having that confidence — whether it’s a make or miss — to shoot the next one.”
