From Wolfpack to Tuffy: The Story of the North Carolina State Mascot

By admin

The North Carolina State mascot is a wolf named Tuffy. Tuffy was chosen as the official mascot in 1921, making it one of the oldest college mascots in the United States. The idea of having a live wolf as the mascot emerged in the early 20th century when the football team was known as the "Red Terrors". The team often wore red uniforms and played aggressively, just like a wolf. Initially, the live wolf mascot was kept on campus, but it was later decided that it was too dangerous to have a wild animal wandering around. So, in 1981, Tuffy I, a timber wolf, became the first costumed mascot for the university.
