Sparty, as he is commonly known, is a popular symbol and representative of the university's athletic teams, particularly the Michigan State Spartans football team. Sparty is known for his distinctive appearance, which includes a green and white striped top and bottom, as well as a large Spartan helmet. He is often seen at sporting events and other university functions, leading cheers and rallying the crowd. The Magic Behind Sparty: Avery Tilley

Avery is graduating with degrees from three colleges and a Sparty-sized secret. May 6, 2023 For decades it has been an honored and sacred tradition for members of the Sparty Mascot Program to proudly walk across the stage at commencement donning the shiny green boots. As the secret is revealed, the crowd goes wild and family and friends finally understand the “why” behind the late nights and last-minute schedule changes. The crowd cheers, but few truly understand the meaning behind the boots: dedication, volunteerism, sacrifice and a whole lot of energy. Those who have had the honor have donated hundreds of hours to the university and community. They know firsthand what it means to be a Spartan and have committed their college experience to spread goodwill, helping those in need, supporting the university, keeping up on pushups and offering countless high fives. Avery, a College of Natural Science, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Honors College grad, had an experience at MSU unlike most and will be crossing the commencement stage with a well-kept secret.

The university held a contest to design the mascot, and a student named Lewis T. Smith was chosen as the winner. Smith's design featured a muscular Spartan warrior, complete with a sword and shield.

Do you have a favorite memory or event in your time as Sparty?

Yes, some of my favorite memories include: beating Wisconsin for Homecoming this year! It was such a great feeling to celebrate a tough win, especially when singing the fight song with the team and student section. I also had a blast learning and performing a halftime dance routine with the MSU dance team! It was so exhilarating to be able to perform a dance on the big stage and get the Breslin Center hyped. I also had a super amazing experience at the Big 10k in Chicago this year! It was so much fun to hang out with other Big 10 mascots and cheer on Spartans as they raced.

Reviews for "A Legacy of Sparty: How Michigan State's Mascot has Created a Lasting Impression"

1. Michael - 2/5 - As a fan of college sports, I was really disappointed with the Michigan State Sparty mascot. First of all, the costume itself looked outdated and unimpressive. It lacked the attention to detail and modern design that many other mascots have. Secondly, the mascot's performance during games was lackluster. They didn't have any standout moves or interactions with the crowd, and they seemed to just go through the motions without any excitement or enthusiasm. Overall, I think Michigan State could definitely step up their mascot game and provide a more engaging and entertaining experience for fans.
2. Samantha - 1/5 - I usually love college mascots, but the Michigan State Sparty mascot was a huge letdown for me. They didn't bring any energy or personality to the games. It felt like they were just there to fulfill their duties without actually interacting with the crowd or getting them excited. Additionally, the costume design was bland and unoriginal. I've seen much more creative and engaging mascots at other universities. I think Michigan State needs to reconsider their mascot choices and find someone who can truly represent their school spirit.
3. Robert - 2/5 - I was really underwhelmed by the Michigan State Sparty mascot. The costume design left much to be desired, as it didn't capture the essence of the school or its spirit. The mascot's performance during games was also lackluster, with no memorable moments or interactions with the crowd. It felt like they were just going through the motions without any real enthusiasm. Overall, I was disappointed with the Michigan State Sparty mascot experience and felt like it didn't add anything special to the game day atmosphere.
