From Fields to Cities: Unexpected Uses for Flying Witch Scarecrows

A flying witch scarecrow is a popular decoration during the Halloween season. It is designed to look like a traditional scarecrow but with the addition of wings and a witch's hat. This creative twist adds an element of whimsy and spookiness to the typical scarecrow, making it a fun and eye-catching decoration for yards and porches. Flying witch scarecrows are often made with a straw-filled body and a wooden frame. The wings can be made of fabric or even feathers to give them a realistic look. The witch's hat is usually made of felt or another lightweight material and is secured to the scarecrow's head.

The Inspire Key Pass is the top tier pass and highest tier option at $1,599 annually or $118.34 each month after a $179 down payment when using the monthly payment plan. This option offers the most flexibility for visiting with the fewest Magic Key block-out dates and theme park restrictions.

To receive discounts applicable to your pass type at select locations throughout the Disneyland Resort theme parks, hotels and Downtown Disney District, you ll need to show your valid Magic Key pass. Any typically for each season, Magic Key holders are often treated to exclusive activities and perks during these events, whether it s an exclusive pin, button, a special photo op, merchandise, or something else.

The witch's hat is usually made of felt or another lightweight material and is secured to the scarecrow's head. It is common for flying witch scarecrows to be posed in a flying position, with their wings outstretched and their legs dangling below. This gives them the appearance of being in mid-flight, adding a sense of motion and excitement to the display.

Buying a Disneyland Magic Key Vs. a Park Hopper – When is it worth it?

I purchased my first Disneyland Annual Pass in 2005. It was a Deluxe Annual Pass (AP) and the purchase price was around $300 for the year. That year I was taking two trips of 3- and 5-day durations and saved money by purchasing the AP. I have used both Park Hoppers and APs in the years since, doing calculations on the number of trips and the discounts to determine what is best for my family. The Disneyland Annual Pass as of August 2021 is now called a “Magic Key”. AT THIS TIME NO NEW MAGIC KEYS ARE BEING SOLD. It’s disappointing for those that want them, but as of August 2022, only renewals are allowed. No new purchases of Magic Keys are available and Disney has not stated when/if they will be. The four “Keys” from most to least expensive are Inspire ($1599)(replaces the prior Dream Key), Believe ($1099), Enchant ($699) and Imagine ($449). The Imagine Key is only for Southern California Residents living in zip codes 90000 to 93599. The other three keys are open to anyone inside or outside the state of California. All Keys are Park Hoppers, but the additional perks and discounts do vary based on the type of Key purchased. Since I am out-of-state, I am only comparing the Inspire, Believe and Enchant Keys. NEW FOR 2022! All Keys will have a 20% discount when purchasing the Disney Genie+ Service. This can be purchased on the day of your visit after you enter a park using your Key.

All Magic Keys are Park Hoppers, but the additional perks and discounts do vary based on the type of pass purchased. As of August 17th, 2022, the choices and prices for non-Southern California residents are:

· NEW FOR 2022! 25% discount on standard parking in the Toy Story Parking Area (excluding blockout dates). Parking is currently $30, so this would reduce it to $22.50 per visit

· Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks and may hold up to 4 theme park reservations at a time

· 50% off standard theme park parking (excluding blockout days, and available for purchase at Mickey & Friends Parking Structure, Pixar Pals Parking Structure and the Toy Story Parking Area). Parking is currently $30, so this would reduce it to $15.00 per day/visit

· Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks and may hold up to 6 theme park reservations at a time

· NEW FOR 2022! 20% discount on Disney Genie+ service.

· Standard theme park parking included (excluding blockout days, and available for purchase at Mickey & Friends Parking Structure, Pixar Pals Parking Structure and the Toy Story Parking Area).

· Reservation-based admission to one or both theme parks and may hold up to 6 theme park reservations at a time

· NEW FOR 2022! 20% discount on Disney Genie+ service.

‘it’s a small world’ Holiday Overlay

Within each of the Magic Key choice, the perks and blackout dates vary widely and may be more or less appropriate for your family. The Enchant Key is blocked during the peak of the summer from June 9 – August 13, so you cannot visit either park at the Disneyland Resort during those dates. In addition to blockout dates, how often do you drive and need to park at the Disneyland Resort? Or do you stay at a hotel within walking distance and don’t need parking? Do you have children in school and only vacation during weekends and holidays? Do you travel only during the holidays? That will impact which ticket is right for you.

Here are the Park Hopper prices as of August 2022 and the number of times you would need to make a trip under each ticket option to make it the cost equivalent of purchasing Magic Key. This is the ticket price only and doesn’t include discounts or other perks. While there are options for discounted tickets through 3rd Party providers, like Undercover Tourist, or severely discounted tickets, like Military, I am doing a comparison of only the retail ticket prices directly from Disney. Keep in mind that you would need to add days to your trip if you have those discount options available to you to create your trip equivalent.

None of the Park Hopper tickets include blockout dates, so your decision on what to buy may also be driven by your vacation dates. Be sure to check the blockout calendar on the Disneyland website for the dates when the Magic Keys cannot be used. Remember too that you can buy discounted tickets for children 3-9, while you will need to pay full price for anyone 3 or older when you purchase a Magic Key.

Since the math from the table above doesn’t include discounts or perks or a combination of trips over a different number of days, we can look at a couple of scenarios to see what might be the right choice. I am not including tax in the meal or merchandise prices.

Scenario 1 – A family of two adults will be taking two trips, one a 3-day and one a 4-day trip. They typically spent $75/day on meals and $25/day on merchandise. They do not need theme park parking or Genie+ service.

Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure Park

This family should definitely look at the blockout dates for the Enchant Key to confirm they fit with their vacation dates as this is the best value. If the dates do not work, the Park Hoppers would be the right choice over the Believe or Inspire Keys.

Scenario 2 – A family of four (all 10 and older) will be taking three trips, one a 2-day, one a 3-day and one a 4-day trip. They typically spent $200/day on meals and $50/day on merchandise. They do need theme park parking ($30/day), and they will want Genie+ for 8 days of the 9 of their trip.

Are you traveling with children? Compare the price for Park Hoppers for the 3-9 age group to the cost of the Key. You may find that only the adults need Keys.

Either the Enchant or the Believe Magic Keys are the right choice for this family. They will save over $2000 by looking at the blockout calendar to confirm they fit with their vacation dates. If this family does not want to plan around block out dates for the Enchant or Believe Keys, they should go with the Park Hoppers.

There are a few more considerations that might influence your decision. Do you want the flexibility to add another vacation weekend? Do you shop or eat at the stores in Downtown Disney that have an AP discount? The Inspire Key may be the best choice when you add in another trip or additional discounts.

Once you have estimated the number of trips, the duration of each of those trips, your food/merchandise spend, parking needs, and desire for Genie+, you will be able to make the decision that financially fits your needs.
