The ease and potency of dark magic eventually caused human dark mages to hunt and poach magical creatures to harvest their magic energy. Horrified by the practice, the elves and the dragons of Xadia divided the continent and drove all humans to the West, where it continued to be part of human culture. [2]
Experienced mages, known as rune mages , 8 can cast spells without the need for a magical artifact, though not all elves reach this level of skill and have to spend years cultivating a deep connection with their arcanum, as well as honing their magic, 6 which includes practicing proper casting of runes and Ancient Draconic incantations. While all magical creatures are connected to a Primal Source, not all of them share the same deep connection with an arcanum, which affects their usage of magic.

Moonshadow Elves have a rather rigid culture: they believe in duty and oaths above all else, and they never show fear. On the night of the full moon, Moonshadow elves are at the height of their power — and can become nearly invisible.
Thunder, The Dragon King
An Archdragon of the Sky, Thunder was the most recent King of the Dragons. All other dragons accepted him as their king, and the elves, too, respected him as the most powerful creature in all of Xadia. Though no humans knew his true name, they fearfully called him “Thunder,” for when he spoke, his voice shook the earth and sky. For centuries, Thunder jealously guarded the border between the human kingdoms and Xadia. From the sky, he could spot any human incursion into his lands — and once he’d seen them, it was already too late. Thunder could transform his body into lightning, arriving instantaneously in a deafening crash, utterly destroying the humans.
The Border
The Border between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms is a churning river of molten lava, created by powerful dragons when humans were driven to the west for practicing dark magic. It is a horrific scar in the land and extremely dangerous for even the most seasoned explorers and soldiers. Katolis keeps The Standing Battalion, one of its most powerful armies, on constant guard at the border. Its troops are led by General Amaya, an iron-fisted commander with a deep hatred for Xadia.
Duren
A lush nation considered the garden of the human kingdoms, Duren trades their unparalleled harvests with all the other kingdoms. Duren’s signature colors are blue and white and its symbol is a flower.
Neolandia
Neolandia lies in the harsh, northern desert lands of the human kingdoms. A constant struggle to obtain water and food has borne a resourceful, but hierarchical civilization. Neolandia’s signature colors are white, black and gold and its symbol is an elephant.
Del Bar
The kingdom of Del Bar has forged a home among the freezing valleys and crags of the western mountains. Renowned for their skills in hunting and smithing, the people of Del Bar relish a simple and practical life close to nature. Del Bar’s signature colors are green and brown and its symbol is a serpent.
Evenere
Hidden in the convoluted tributaries of the swamplands, Evenere has a reputation as a dreary place. Cut off from the other kingdoms by any avenue other than ship, the people of Evenere live fiercely independent lives. Evenere’s signature colors are black and green and its symbol is a dragonfly.
Moon Nexus
Moon magic is most powerful at the Moon Nexus, a beautiful lake high on a mountain where the full moon reflects perfectly on the water’s surface. When the land was split in two, the Moon Nexus fell upon the human side of the Border, and thus the Moonshadow elves appointed a Guardian of the Nexus to protect its power from human greed.
Lux Aurea
Lux Aurea is the crowning achievement of the Sunfire Elves, a gleaming city of gold that radiates beauty, pride, and military might. At the city’s heart is the Sunforge, a tower that captures the primal magic of the sun itself to infuse weapons with ever-searing heat. Beyond the Sunforge is the palace, where the fierce Sunfire Queen holds court.
The Storm Spire
Beyond the Midnight Desert stands a needle of solid rock so tall it pierces the clouds. It was here at the highest point in Xadia that ancient Sky archdragons carved a palace out of solid stone. From this perch in the sky, the Dragon King and Queen have kept a fearless watch over the magical land of Xadia.

By day, the black sands of the Midnight Desert soak up the sun’s rays, subjecting travelers to terrible, terrible heat. But the night is worse: when the sun goes down, soulfang serpents emerge from below to suck the soul from anyone foolish enough to stray from the safety of the central oasis. Good luck!
The second point I'm going to make is one that's hard to confirm since we don't see it directly in the show, but it's what Dark Magic looks like to someone who possesses an Arcanum. Imagine being an elf born with magic. A Dark Mage comes along and takes another creature with your Arcanum, destroys it, and uses the magic it used to survive in its natural world for a single spell that appears to your eyes to be perverted and reeking of death. Another creature with your magic died so this man/woman could create a spell that creature was never meant to produce, and since your Arcanum is the same as that creature's you can feel the mage steal, warp, and corrupt its magic throughout the entire process. I feel this is a point far too many people forget; that Dark Magic at its very nature is a warping and corruption of real magic.
Others claim it was an intricate spell gone awry, transforming a mortal prince into a hybrid creature of darkness and magic. Regardless of its true origin, the Dark Magic Dragon Prince commands respect and fear wherever it roams. Though the Dragon Prince is often depicted as a fearsome and relentless creature, it possesses a level of intelligence that surpasses ordinary comprehension. Its mind, honed by centuries of existence, hides behind a gaze as deep as the abyss. With this wisdom, the Dragon Prince maneuvers through the shadows, always one step ahead of its foes. Legends recount the Dragon Prince's involvement in ancient wars, battles that shook the very foundations of the fantasy realm. Its dark magic proved to be a formidable weapon, capable of decimating entire armies in an instant. However, the true nature of the Dragon Prince remains shrouded in mystery.
