Explained: What’s The Curse Mark On Sasuke? What Does It Mean?

Sasuke Uchiha is unquestionably one of the best characters we can discuss if we’re talking about the characters from Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto franchise, which it is by this point clear that we are. There is a lot to discuss when it comes to Sasuke because he is a fan favourite and one of the best characters in the entire saga in terms of character development. The curse mark that Sasuke possesses will be discussed in this article, along with an explanation of what it actually is.

One of Orochimaru’s fiercest cursed seals, the Cursed Seal of Heaven’s counterpart, is the Cursed Seal of the Earth. The Sharingan-like seal is made up of three tomoe, which when activated spread out throughout the body like flames. The user’s chakra level and physical capabilities rise, as with all Cursed Seals. Sasuke and Anko both have the seal visible on the back of their necks.

We will give you additional information about Sasuke’s Curse Mark in this article and respond to some of your questions. The curse mark, its history, and a number of other issues pertaining to Sasuke’s character will be the main topics of the page. If you want to learn everything there is to know about Sasuke’s Curse Mark, this is going to be your greatest all-in-one guide.

What is the Curse Mark on Sasuke?

One of Orochimaru’s fiercest cursed seals, the Cursed Seal of Heaven’s counterpart, is the Cursed Seal of the Earth. The Sharingan-like seal is made up of three tomoe, which when activated spread out throughout the body like flames. The user gains more chakra power and physical prowess while the seal is in effect, as is the case with other Cursed Seals, up to the point where it hits the second stage, which is equivalent to the power of Naruto’s one-tailed form.

Jugo, a Shinobi, is the source of the Cursed Seal of Heaven. Jugo went to see Orochimaru in the hopes that he would be able to calm his uncontrollable rages. But Jugo’s ability to absorb natural energy in order to grow power surprised Orochimaru. Jugo’s mental condition suffered as a result of this procedure, but Orochimaru was undaunted and set about discovering a means to use this power. He extracted enzymes from Jugo’s blood and combined them with his own Senjutsu Chakra. The curses were so produced.

As a result of his failure to enter Sage mode, Orochimaru discovered a different way to use the Senjutsu Chakra: by branding other individuals to serve as his vessels. Orochimaru was able to develop his abilities by branding a follower with a curse mark while utilising their bodies as conduits for him to learn and gain understanding.

Mitsudomoe is the name of the curse mark’s pattern. The insignia consists of three of these comma-like signs in a circle, which can be translated as “mitsu” three and “domoe” comma-like. The Japanese consider a tomoe to be a seed of life that houses the spirits of the dead and confers power on its bearer. It is a typical pattern found on Japanese family crests and traditional Japanese roof tiles.

The tomoe itself is a traditional emblem that comes from Magatama. Unconfirmed theories about what these symbols originally stood for include everything from the moon to the shape of the soul to an animal teeth. The interaction between the cosmic powers that make up our universe—heaven, earth, and either the underworld or man—is sometimes represented as the mitsudomoe.

Later, the pattern became associated with Hachiman, the Shinto God of war, and many people came to see it as a representation of bravery and power. The fact that there are three tomoe is particularly noteworthy because many religions and cultures around the world consider three to be a sacred number.

The interaction between various beings fusing their powers is represented by Sasuke being marked with The Cursed Seal of Heaven in the context of Naruto. Jugo, Orochimaru, and Sasuke are three creatures that have components of each operating together in a single vessel. The relationship between Sasuke, the spiritual realm, and his natural surroundings, or between heaven, earth, and man, can alternatively be represented by the three domoe. The mitsudomoe represents strength and how, when abused, it may be a negative force that sparks conflict.

The Cursed Seal of Heaven’s abilities are even more enigmatic and dramatic than its meaning. An individual could not be regarded as free while they were still branded, regardless of whether the mark was viewed as a blessing or a burden. How does Sasuke remove the curse mark from himself? Find out by reading on.

How did Sasuke get the Curse Mark?

As you are probably already aware, Orochimaru gave Sasuke his Curse Mark. During the second round of the Chnin Exams, which happened in the Forest of Death, Orochimaru gave Sasuke the Cursed Seal. Sasuke’s mentality was intended to be corrupted by the seal in order for him to become Orochimaru’s next body. In an effort to stop this, Kakashi Hatake attempted the Evil Sealing Method, but Sasuke’s refusal to apply the Cursed Seal limited its effectiveness. He did utilise it eventually, but he never really gave in to Orochimaru’s might entirely.

What Does Sasuke’s Curse Mark Mean? (Explained)
Anko is the only other person who is known to have the Mark, and her tale is both similar and unique. The Cursed Seal was given to Anko while she was Orochimaru’s pupil. She was the first to be given the cursed seal, along with nine other people. Given that she was the only survivor of the “Mark,” the likelihood of surviving a seal was one in ten.

Her seal withered since she lacked the motivation to utilise it, and (in the anime) Orochimaru erased her memory. When they battled in the Forest of Death, Orochimaru was able to briefly break the seal before the Third Hokage sealed it again once more. When Sasuke utilised the Evil Releasing Method to restore Orochimaru’s consciousness and body, it was completely erased.

How does Sasuke’s Curse Mark work?

Kabuto claims that the impure world reincarnation incantation has more binding force because the seal itself contains Orochimaru’s chakra. Sasuke used a fragment of Kabuto’s altered flesh together with the fact that Orochimaru’s consciousness was still divided amongst the cursed seals after he was vanquished to restore him to his original form and spirit.

What precisely does the Curse Mark do? In addition to allowing Orochimaru to corrode one’s mind from the inside, it also significantly increases the user’s power. As we’ve already mentioned, the user gains more chakra power and physical prowess as the seal is in effect, up until the second stage, when it reaches a level equivalent to that of Naruto’s one-tailed form.

Is Sasuke stronger with the Curse Mark?

Since Sasuke was already extremely powerful, the first level didn’t do much for him, to be completely honest. While it did give him a boost, it wasn’t much, to be honest. You can see why the first level didn’t truly do anything for Sasuke because he was able to easily fend off the Mark’s impact. But on the second floor, things were very different.

Sasuke eventually made the decision to advance his seal to its second stage despite originally refusing to, using the Sound Four’s assistance to depart the village and reach Orochimaru. Sasuke’s strength and menacingness increased greatly on the second level compared to the first. The fight between Sasuke and Deidara in Manga Part II is the clearest example of this.

Deidara and Obito seek after Orochimaru’s killer after wishing to kill him, either Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha’s younger brother, or Naruto, depending on who they encounter first along the route. When he does, Obito and Deidara engage him in combat. At first, Obito just assists Deidara by laying mines, but later he gives up the fight.

Deidara first uses his C1 chakra, but when that doesn’t damage Sasuke, he switches to his C2 chakra. Deidara then declares that he will keep toying with Sasuke. After Deidara’s attempts fail because Sasuke’s element neutralises the explosive element and prevents it from detonating, Sasuke decides to use his final technique—the C4 Karura—which he claims he had saved to kill Itachi in the future. However, this attempt also fails because the explosive element was neutralised by Sasuke’s element.

Sasuke tackles Deidara from above after spotting him using his trained eye to do a Genjutsu. As a result, they both fall to the ground and exhaust their chakra. Deidara makes the decision to blow himself up as a final act, declaring that through passing away, he will transform into art. He then opens the mouth he has on his chest and fills it with explosive clay. When Sasuke summons Manda to defend himself, the strike misses and causes a large explosion with a 10-kilometer radius, rendering Deidara’s final attack ineffective like the others.

Did the Curse Mark change Sasuke?

The most it changed about him was his appearance. Sasuke’s character growth revealed that he had internal conflicts before he truly became imprinted with the Curse, therefore his mind wasn’t all that perverted by the Mark. His concerns were always centred on his family’s history, and the seal had little bearing on that.

Regarding the physical alterations, Sasuke’s complexion turned grey and his hair took on a dark blue hue after activating the second level of the seal. He also developed grey eyes. A dark star-shaped mark also formed on the bridge of his nose, and he developed claw-pinniped wings on his back that he could utilise for gliding. During his battle with Deidara in Part II, Sasuke lost his left wing in one of the explosions but replaced it with snakes.

How did Sasuke get rid of the Curse Mark?

During the closing seconds of Sasuke’s battle with Itachi, the seal is broken. Sasuke briefly believes he has triumphed, but Itachi unexpectedly gets up. His Susanoo, a massive chakra protector that can only be held by people who have the Mangeky Sharingan in both eyes, has helped him endure the effects of Kirin.

Sasuke’s body is being taken over by the suppressed aspect of Orochimaru that he had absorbed as Itachi advances near Sasuke, who has no chakra left. Sasuke’s cursed seal is broken by Orochimaru’s eight white snakes using the Eight Branches technique, and Orochimaru himself appears from one of the snakes’ mouths. He is appreciative of getting another chance to take over Sasuke’s body and thanks Itachi for reducing Sasuke’s chakra sufficiently for him to be set free.

Itachi manages to seal Orochimaru and decapitates seven of the eight snakes using his Susanoo Sword of Totsuka, which can seal any soul and trap it in a genjutsu for all time, erasing Sasuke’s cursed seal in the process. The result is a simplified version of Itachi’s Susanoo because this demands too much chakra.

Itachi coughs up blood and moves slowly toward Sasuke, who is unable to flee. Itachi walks up to Sasuke and speaks his final words to him before giving him a forehead bump and falling to the ground lifeless. Sasuke considers Itachi’s final words and looks at his brother’s body before passing out from weariness and collapsing next to him.

Why did Itachi remove Sasuke’s Curse Mark?

Why did Itachi finally act in the way that he did? to return his brother’s freedom. Even though Sasuke was his opponent at the time, Itachi hated that Sasuke had lost his independence to Orochimaru and tried everything in his power to win it back for him. The Uchiha were a proud clan.

What episode does Sasuke remove the Curse Mark in?

The original Naruto: Shippden anime series’ episode 138, titled “The End,” featured these events. The episode was a part of the Fated Battle Between Brothers arc and made its debut on December 3, 2009.

~Curse Mark~

It seem as time goes on, Sasuke’s sporadic use of chakra simply gives room for the curse mark to spread at any given time, his body unable to maintain an ounce of control. This induces pain to spread as well as the exhaustion he was already feeling.

“If he stays, he’s a danger to everyone. Don’t you see? As he gets stronger so does the curse mark. That thing is feeding off his chakra. It’s a forbidden jutsu that devours the one who bears it. It’s incredible the kid’s still standing. By now he should be dead.” – Anko (Episode 38: Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination)

Despite the fact that Sasuke’s chakra is gradually being drained, he believes he can handle it when the fight against Yoroi is soon to begin. Beforehand, Sakura attempts to convince him to quit, but all that managed to do was cause a rise in attitude and stubbornness, explaining that the test was about reaching a point of strength. He doesn’t care about the title of Chunin, much less if he was promoted at the end of the exams, which shocks Naruto since he aimed to achieve recognition within gaining the advanced level. Sasuke simply wants to know if he’s as strong as he can be, skilled enough to fight the best of the best.

It’s not difficult to see he’s in no condition to fight. Sasuke attempts to figure out how the curse mark interacts with his chakra to be able to win or in the very least last the duration. At this stage, the pain is constant, rather than fluctuating.

“If that mark on your neck gets out of control, your life could be in danger.” – Kakashi (Episode 38: Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination)

Despite Anko having a curse mark, not many know exactly what it’s capable of in this stage. I’m sure only a select few know the details surrounding its existence. She’s also not one to tamper with it, seeking no further use of it after realizing how dangerous it could become. It’s possible if Sasuke uses up the remaining amount of his chakra with any type of jutsu, it’d result in death or near death because his body can’t handle the strain. There’s a reason the success rate is so low. Although those compatible are able to survive and conserve the mark’s influence over them, that doesn’t mean the corruption to the mind and body are any less significant or cease to happen.

“It seems to be responding to my chakra. Every time I use my chakra this thing gets a little stronger. It gains a little more control over me.” – Sasuke (Episode 38: Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination)

Sasuke hastily assess and figures out what is occurring, but doesn’t have the ability to counteract it. When the battle begins, he doesn’t even have to use chakra, the mark pulsated by him moving to defend himself from the oncoming shuriken, causing his body to immediately give out. He quickly recovers, only to be knocked down after a simple attack.

“Watch yourself, Sasuke. Don’t push it.” – Kakashi (Episode 38: Narrowing the Field: Sudden Death Elimination)

Yoroi’s jutsu proves to be disastrous as it siphons what’s left of Sasuke’s chakra reserves, which would ultimately allow the mark to invade on its own accord since he’d be left with no option except to rely on it as Orochimaru assumed. However, Sasuke was able to kick his opponent off before that happened. He didn’t have the speed or the energy for a close quarter fight, needing to rely on the Dancing Leaf Shadow technique he copied from Lee, but exerting that much chakra was too much. He also didn’t have the proper training or stamina like other ninja would need to pull it off, but being of Uchiha blood and use of his sharingan, he managed it. His body became immobilized while in the air, he coughed up blood, and the curse began to spread once more. With his will alone (probably what made Kakashi deiced to use the seal he had), Sasuke was able to force the curse mark to recede (as if control was momentarily seized) and win the preliminary round.

After Kakashi stops him from falling back due to fatigue, his breathing becomes extremely heavy, his body is severely shaking, and he appears to be having some chest pain (most likely from using Lee’s taijutsu). Kakashi mentions giving Sasuke enough slack by allowing him to fight in the first place (considering no one knew how he’d fare if allowed to fight) and then his sensei takes him from the arena.

Before the seal was given, a compilation of lethal side effects took place. Now if it were left on its own, there’s no telling how affected Sasuke would have been. I’d imagine the damage done over this course of time would become a relentless struggle for him, locating no source of constraining the fluctuation of tainted chakra flowing through him, and especially the level of intolerable pain. After all, this mark is a means of manipulation, not only a given power supply. Attaining a level of control this early on would be impossible on his own, providing nothing more than further incentive to seek Orochimaru out for a balance in the power and more of it once the extent is fully known.

[NARUTO 20th Anniversary Column] Retracing the NARUTO Anime's Ninja Way No.3: Sasuke Retrieval Arc ~ Pre-Shippuden Series Finale

In this column, we'll be looking back at the NARUTO anime to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its first broadcast on TV in Japan! Join this writer, a fellow fan from the NARUTO generation, as we retrace the series from its humble beginnings to its climactic conclusion! This article covers the Sasuke Retrieval arc through the end of the pre-Shippuden series!

The townspeople were quick to point fingers, and Abigail was arrested and put on trial. Despite her protests of innocence, she was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. As she stood on the gallows, Abigail cursed the crowd, vowing that she would return from the dead to seek revenge on those who had wronged her.

Sasuke Chooses Vengeance: Sasuke Retrieval Arc!!

Naruto successfully brings Tsunade back to the Village Hidden in the Leaves. But there's no time to relax, as Sasuke immediately demands to fight him upon regaining consciousness.
This is only the first of many trials to come in the Sasuke Retrieval arc.

"Fight me!" Naruto VS Sasuke!!

Naruto is challenged to a duel by Sasuke, who has only just awakened in the hospital. While he is hesitant to accept at first, Naruto agrees upon seeing how important it is to Sasuke.

"NARUTO!!"

Unlike their usual more-or-less friendly rivalry, this time the two shinobi go at each other in earnest.

Sasuke counters Naruto's Shadow Clones with his Fire Ball Jutsu, and when Naruto reveals his Rasengan, Sasuke promptly prepares his Chidori.

But Sakura and Kakashi intervene, leaving the fight with no resolution.
The Sound's Invitation. Sasuke Steps Into Darkness

Orochimaru's loyal subordinates, the Sound Ninja Four, appear before Sasuke.
Cleverly playing to his obsession with revenge, they succeed in inciting him to desert the village.

"SAKURA.
THANK YOU. "

Sakura, who sensed something off with Sasuke, intercepts him on the road out of the village, begging him to stay. However, her pleas fall on deaf ears, and Sasuke follows the Sound Ninja Four back to Orochimaru.

Tsunade learns of the situation the following morning and sends an emergency summons to Shikamaru, who has just been promoted to Chunin.
She orders him to form a team and set off immediately in pursuit of Sasuke.

"LIKE US, SASUKE IS A SHINOBI OF KONOHAGAKURE.
HE IS OUR COMRADE!
THEREFORE I WILL STAKE MY LIFE TO RESCUE HIM.
THAT'S THE KONOHA WAY."
Shikamaru's team assembles, the newly-appointed Chunin joined by Naruto, Kiba, Choji, and Neji!
"PLEASE BRING SASUKE BACK. "
"IT'S OKAY. I'LL BRING SASUKE BACK FOR SURE!
THAT'S MY PROMISE OF A LIFETIME!!"
After listening to Sakura's heartbreaking plea, Naruto and the others set off to bring Sasuke home.
Leaf and Sound Play Cat-and-Mouse

The Sound Ninja Four are forced to take a breather after tangling with Jonin from the Hidden Leaf, allowing Shikamaru's team to catch up.
Jirobo stays behind to allow the other three sound ninja to escape with Sasuke, and when Choji volunteers to be his opponent, the battle between brawlers begins!

Choji Spreads His Wings!

With the aid of the Akimichi Clan's secret medicine, a triad of different-colored pills, Choji unleashes a level of power that overwhelms Jirobo!
The sound ninja counters by using the power of his Curse Mark, but Choji refuses to give up, taking the next of the three pills to increase his strength even further!

After swallowing the third and strongest pill, the Chili Pepper Pill, Choji's body undergoes a staggering transformation!

His chakra pours out, forming the wings of a butterfly before Choji gathers it all into his left fist for one final attack that crushes Jirobo!

Unfortunately, using the Akimichi Clan's secret medicine comes with a steep cost, and Choji quickly falls unconscious, unable to rejoin his teammates.

Neji's Resolve: Defying Fate!

The next of the Sound Ninja Four to waylay the team is Kidomaru, who fights using spiderwebs spun from his own chakra. Neji, realizing that his Byakugan and Gentle Fist technique make him uniquely suited to combat this, nominates himself to remain behind and fight.

However, Kidomaru excels at quickly analyzing and reacting to his opponent's jutsu, which enables him to not only survive Neji's Gentle Fist 8 Trigrams 64 Palms technique, but even to devise a strategy against the Hyuga's defensive 8 Trigrams Palm Rotation.

Neji finds himself fighting for his life when the blind spot of his near-infallible Byakugan is discovered by Kidomaru, but he refuses to give up.
Knowing he will be unable to dodge completely, he instead allows Kidomaru's attack to hit to create an opening. His gambit pays off, and Neji manages to strike a stunned Kidomaru with the Gentle Fist technique.

"FATE. ISN'T SOMETHING FOR YOU TO DECIDE."

This battle shows how much Neji has grown since his fight with Naruto during the Chunin Exams, as he lives up to his reputation as a "genius" by defeating the formidable Kidomaru.

Battles on Three Fronts

The remaining members of Shikamaru's team manage to catch up to Tayuya and Sakon, and even successfully secure the coffin containing Sasuke. But their triumph is short-lived, as Kimamaro—the fifth and strongest member of the former Sound Ninja Five—arrives on the scene to retake it.
Kiba and Akamaru face off against Sakon after an explosion knocks the three down into a gorge. Up above, Shikamaru stays behind to fight Tayuya, sending Naruto ahead to pursue Kimimaro and Sasuke.

A Surprise Tag Team!!

Kiba and Sakon commence their fight at the bottom of the gorge, and in a shocking turn of events, it is revealed that "Sakon" is actually one body shared by both him and his brother Ukon!
Kiba and his faithful pup Akamaru combine into the Two-Headed Wolf to unleash a brand-new jutsu: Wolf Fang Over Fang, a technique that's more explosive than ever!

The sibling combo just barely manages to withstand the onslaught, and Ukon finds himself separated from his brother before attaching to Kiba's body!
Kiba reacts quickly, stabbing himself in order to deal a heavy blow to Ukon! However, this leaves Kiba grievously wounded as well, and he retreats via the river to hide his scent.

Chess Match Between Sound and Shadow

Meanwhile, Shikamaru struggles to hold his own against Tayuya and the three giant monsters she controls with her flute.
She attacks relentlessly while maintaining a flawless defense, but Shikamaru pulls off an ingenious scheme that tricks her into entering the range of his Shadow Possession Jutsu!

However, Tayuya continues to resist, and with neither side able to deal the final blow, the battle reaches a stalemate.

The Return of the Leaf Village's Handsome Devil!

Naruto finds himself unable to make headway against Kimimaro's overwhelming strength, and to make matters worse, Sasuke emerges from the coffin and continues his journey toward Orochimaru on his own.

As Naruto lowers his guard to chase after Sasuke, Kimamaro goes in for the kill—but the attack is stopped in the nick of time by Lee, who's fresh out of surgery and ready to save the day!

"I'LL BEAT THIS GUY!
THAT'S MY PROMISE!!"

Just as Naruto promised Sakura he'd bring back Sasuke, Lee makes a vow of his own: to defeat Kimimaro!
Kimimaro, who can use his own bones as weapons, is up against Lee, who mistook a bottle of Tsunade's "private potion" for his medicine, inadvertently causing him to fight using the Loopy Fist technique!

Both fighters' unique styles make for an action-packed sequence that's worth a watch, especially Lee's erratic moves, handstand kicks, and his tendency to fall asleep during the fight!
It's a battle that manages to be both serious and comical, and I find myself smiling each time I watch it!

However, Lee's loopy state wears off, and when Kimimaro is able to fend off even his Primary Lotus, the Hidden Leaf ninja's odds aren't looking good. On their own battlefields, Kiba and Shikamaru face a similar predicament!

Allies of the Leaf: The Siblings of the Sand Are Here!!

The Hidden Sand's ninja arrive as reinforcements, with Temari swooping in to save Shikamaru, Kankuro going to Kiba's rescue, and Gaara backing up Lee!
While they were terrifying foes during the Chunin Exams and the attack on the Hidden Leaf Village, the three siblings show themselves to be reliable allies this time around!

"THE ART OF THE IRON MAIDEN!!"
"FINIS."
"KUCHIYOSE! SUMMONING!
KIRIKIRIMAI! BLADE DANCE!"
"WHAT D'YA THINK?"

Kankuro and Temari are both able to quickly dispatch their opponents with powerful jutsu!!

However, Kimimaro, the man renowned as the strongest of the Sound Ninja Five, is not so easily defeated.
Countering Gaara's waves of sand and entering his Curse Mark's second state, Kimimaro goes on the offensive.

Gaara manages to defend himself with his Ultimate Defense, but Kimimaro's tenacity knows no bounds. His fervor drives him to exceed even Gaara's power, and just as the sand ninja is about to be run through—

—Kimimaro dies, and the battle is brought to a sudden and unexpected end.

Elsewhere, Naruto has finally caught up to Sasuke.

Reviews for "The Witch Trials in Williamsburg: Lessons from History"

- Ben - 1 star - I was so excited to visit "Bawl witch Williamsburg" after hearing great reviews, but I was completely let down. The whole experience felt disjointed and unorganized. The actors seemed unprofessional and the story they were trying to tell was confusing. I was expecting a thrilling and immersive experience, but instead I was left bored and disappointed. Save your money and find another haunted attraction to visit.
- Sarah - 2 stars - "Bawl witch Williamsburg" was not what I expected. The set design was lacking and the scares were predictable. The actors tried their best, but it just wasn't scary or engaging enough. The whole experience felt rushed and not well thought out. I hope they can improve in the future, but for now, I would not recommend.
- Mike - 1 star - I was extremely disappointed with "Bawl witch Williamsburg". The advertising made it seem like a terrifying and unique haunted attraction, but it fell flat. The scares were lackluster and the script was cheesy. I didn't feel immersed in the world they were trying to create. It felt more like a cheap Halloween carnival than a professional haunted experience. I would not recommend wasting your time or money on this.
- Emily - 2 stars - I had high hopes for "Bawl witch Williamsburg" but unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. The scares were too few and far between, and when they did happen, they were underwhelming. The actors seemed unenthusiastic and the overall atmosphere was not spooky or eerie. There are definitely better haunted attractions out there.
