Wiccan religious feasts take place throughout the year, following the rhythms of nature and the ever-changing seasons. In the year 2024, Wiccans will gather to celebrate eight major Sabbats, which include both solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days. These festivals hold deep significance for practitioners, as they honor the cycles of life, death, and rebirth. The year will begin with Imbolc, also known as Candlemas, on February 2nd. This festival marks the end of winter and the coming of spring. Wiccans will light candles to symbolize the returning light and perform rituals to welcome the awakening earth and fertility.

Holy Day Calendar
As part of it's commitment to creating a more diverse and equitable community, Dartmouth supports students, staff, and faculty in observing religious holidays of significance to them. In the complex process of creating the academic calendar, religious holy days are but one of many considerations. The College has always been helpful in facilitating communication and encouraging respect and understanding when there are academic calendar conflicts with religious holy days.
Students who wish to participate in religious observances during the academic term that conflicts with their participation in a course, should contact their professor before the end of the second week of the term—at the latest - to discuss appropriate accommodations.
To assist with calendar planning and awareness of our diverse religious and spiritual community, this page contains month-by-month listings of religious observances in 2023 and 2024. The list represents holy days which may impact campus events in general, as well as student course attendance, exams, Commencement, and participation in activities in the coming year.

Wiccans will honor the balance between light and dark and embrace the theme of renewal and growth. Beltane, observed on May 1st, marks the beginning of summer and the peak of fertility in nature. Wiccans will engage in fireside rituals, dance around the Maypole, and celebrate the union of the divine feminine and masculine. Midsummer, or Litha, falls on June 21st, the summer solstice. This Sabbat represents the longest day of the year, filled with sunlight. Wiccans will celebrate the power of the sun, perform rituals around bonfires, and pay tribute to the abundance of the earth. Lammas, also called Lughnasadh, occurs on August 1st, when the first harvest of grains takes place. Wiccans will give thanks for the abundance of the earth and share in communal feasts. This Sabbat emphasizes the importance of community and sustenance. On September 23rd, Mabon falls on the autumn equinox, signaling the arrival of fall. Wiccans will gather to honor the changing seasons, express gratitude for the year's harvest, and prepare for the approaching darkness of winter. Samhain, perhaps the most well-known Wiccan festival, will be celebrated on October 31st. This Sabbat marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Wiccans believe that the veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest on this night, and they will perform rituals to communicate with departed loved ones and embrace the cycle of life and death. Lastly, Yule, the winter solstice, will take place on December 21st. Wiccans will celebrate the return of the sun and the rebirth of light. They will perform rituals to banish darkness and welcome the return of longer days.
