Witch Hat knobs again
I know this has been discussed before, but maybe things have changed.
I have a 2006 Gibson SG Classic. The stock knobs are reflector-topped top hat knobs, and I don't like them. For one thing they are fragile, and the reflectors are missing on two of them, and the rim on top is cracked on two. And they're too slick to get a good grip on in the heat of the moment. They need replacing.
My first good electric guitar was a mid-'60s SG Jr., which had witch hat knobs. I loved them because they had a narrow top part with a ribbed surface, so they were easy to manipulate in the cramped space that Gibson provides.
I've bought two sets of cheap contemporary witch-hat-type knobs from local and online sources, and they were all obviously stamped out in the same Chinese factory. I see tons of these online under various brand names (including Allparts) and none of them fit right. The problem is that there is not enough room underneath for the pot's lock nut. The flange of the cheapos is too flat. The knobs can be pressed on to the shaft just fine, but they won't go flat against the face of the guitar. I'm told by the local shop that they sell tons of these, but I can't imagine how they would work with any flat-faced guitar. Here's a little diagram that might make it more clear:
Apparently, the source of the original witch hats is gone, as Gibson doesn't offer any current models with these knobs as far as I know. I see "vintage" originals on eBay for outRAGEous prices. Certainly more than I'm willing to pay.
- Are there any easily available repros of the old witch hats that will accommodate the lock nut?
- Can the currently common cheapos be modified to fit my guitar?
- How in the world do the current cheapos fit on current flat-faced guitars? Seems to me that you would need a recess in the face of the guitar for them to work.
- Can anyone suggest a different grippy knob? I don't care a lot about how they look. I just want a knob I can grab (besides my own.) For example, I have a Peavey bass that has something similar to Gibson speed knobs, but they have a ribbed rubber thing around the edge that provides a nice gripping surface. Of course, as far as I can tell, those aren't available any longer, though they are sought after.
