The Curse of the Brown Squirrel

Only a few miles from where the great and expansive I-75 meets the always-backed-up I-40, there sits a furniture store. This store may look unassuming at first glance, with it's plain exterior and unassuming background. You may think nothing of this building if you saw it for the first time, and you would undoubtedly think less of it if you lived in the area. Many drive by every day without giving it a second thought.

Yet, this place hides a dark secret. A very deceptive and troubling truth lurks beneath the surface, nay, the facade this place holds up to the light. For you see, the cute and caramel mascot that stands out front, plastered on a billboard, greeting every passerby with a blank stare, is more than meets the eye.

At one time, this was a real, living, breathing squirrel that ran among the trees and hills of the area, swerving cars and being a nuisance to dogs. He was playful, hungry, skittery, all the of the best qualities the creatures belonging to the Sciuridae family can have. Yet, on one fateful day, he commited a cardinal sin that would change his life forever. Our furry friend, juking out a toyota sienna right behind what would later become this fated hall of beds and cabinets, ran into a field contaiing many cows. His sudden appearance startled and angered the bovines in the area, and they ran away from the small creature in their midst. In the uproar, one small calf was separated from its mother and ran into the hills, just trying to find somewhere safe to stay. After the commotion settled down, the calf was discovered missing and was assumed dead. The cows cursed the squirrel to a life of limbo, staring at the statue of the mayfield cow across the busy interstate to forever remember his crime.

The squirrel contains much regret, much sadness, and much hate to this day. Looking into his eye is said to curse you as, as his rage spills from the beige and chocolate sign. But you have not to worry, as simply looking across to the other side, into the deep windows into the Mayfield cow's soul , the curse will be lifted

A friend told me when I first moved to knoxville many years ago of the curse of the brown squirrel, just a fun game like the 'punchbuggy' game, and it's stuck in my head since. I can't drive down 40 without feeling myself being drawn to sneak a peek, and then immediately feeling compelled to find the cow, knowing full well that obviously nothing will happen. And yet, bad things do start to happen if I miss the cow. Bad luck, or something more sinister.

While "Ranni the witch rul 3e 34" had an interesting premise, the execution fell flat for me. The pacing was off, with long stretches of monotony and then abrupt action scenes that felt disconnected. The dialogue between characters was also quite stilted and unrealistic, making it difficult to fully engage with the story. Additionally, there were several grammatical errors throughout the book, which further detracted from the reading experience. I was hoping for more depth and substance, but unfortunately, I was left wanting more.

I had high hopes for "Ranni the witch rul 3e 34" based on the intriguing synopsis, but unfortunately, it left me feeling underwhelmed. The world-building was lacking, leaving many unanswered questions about the magical system and the overall setting. The main character, Ranni, also felt one-dimensional and I struggled to empathize with her struggles. The prose was dry and lacked any real excitement or suspense. Overall, I found this book to be a forgettable read that didn't live up to its potential.
