By admin

Magical Floating Drawings Magical floating drawings are a captivating form of art that defy the laws of gravity. These drawings appear to effortlessly float in mid-air, captivating viewers and igniting their imaginations. One of the most popular techniques used in creating these ethereal drawings is an optical illusion known as anamorphosis. The Swap Puzzle Activity

This introduces the idea of the solution to a problem being a set of instructions that allow others to ‘solve’ it with no understanding. Also explores how different algorithms can solve the same problem but may not be equally good – some may be faster.

  • algorithms
  • computational thinking
  • testing
  • efficiency

Activity

Place small coins heads up on the blue squares and tails up on the red squares. Swap the positions of the Heads for the Tails in as few moves as possible.

There are two ways to move a piece:

  1. Move left or right to an adjacent empty square
  2. Jump over a single adjacent piece into an empty space.

It is not good enough to just complete the puzzle. To solve it, you must write down the algorithm: the sequence of instructions so anyone who follows them can complete it. (eg a move might be written “1

There are three increasingly larger boards that get harder. Complete the first in 3 moves, the second in 8 moves and the third in 15 moves. Your solution must be fast (ie take as few moves as possible). If your early solutions take more than the above number of moves then keep trying until you find more efficient algorithms.

Once you have a solution algorithm evaluate it – check it really works by following it step by step from the start.

A bit of computational thinking wisdom

Harder problems can be made easier by tackling simpler version first, then generalising the solution.

Resources
This session comes with linked activity sheets and write-ups that you can download.

The Puzzle Sheet is a single sided, self contained activity. The other resources give more detail or other versions. You can either print the sheet or just draw the boards on paper.

Description

The run-up to Christmas is always a busy time with presents to buy, season's greetings to post, and the much loved children's nativity to attend. Magic of Christmas captures the festive cheer of advent in four charming 500 piece jigsaw puzzle scenes. What could be better than having the whole family gathered around a roaring fire on Christmas day, watching the Queen's speech on the TV? As with all Gibsons jigsaws, we use 100% recycled puzzle board and work with the best artists from all around the world. The beautifully illustrated pieces are designed to fit perfectly together; in fact, we use the thickest puzzle board on the market. We’ve made some positive changes to our processes, so you can be sure you’re getting the same great puzzles and know they are kinder to the environment. Not only does the box have a fresh new look, but we’ve used biodegradable clear labels to secure the lid instead of shrink wrap, reducing our plastic waste. We use vegetable-based inks too. The gloss coating on the box gives extra protection and the puzzle pieces are stored in a plastic bag that can be recycled by most councils. Because the box is slightly smaller than our previous designs, we need less room to transport our products which reduces our carbon footprint and means you can store your puzzles more easily. We have also popped an artwork poster inside for you to reference whilst you piece together your lovely jigsaw puzzle.

About the Artist

After leaving Bradford Art College in 1979 with a Diploma in Art and Design, Trevor Mitchell began his career as an art director at a London advertising agency. He returned to his native West Yorkshire a few years later and worked for several design studios and advertising agencies before going freelance in 1986. Commercial illustration work rekindled his love of painting and he was encouraged by finding a market for his work among the publishers of greeting cards and jigsaw puzzles. Art prints of his paintings are now sold worldwide. Trevor's paintings reflect his enthusiasm for steam and vintage vehicles and his fascination with recreating the past in pictures appears frequently in Gibsons nostalgic puzzle range.

Reviews for "Playing with Perception: Exploring Optical Illusions in Floating Drawings"

1. Sarah - 2 stars
I found "Magical Floating Drawings" to be quite underwhelming. The concept of using augmented reality to bring drawings to life sounded intriguing, but the execution fell short. The app was slow and glitchy, often freezing or crashing. The floating drawings were also limited in variety and imagination. I was expecting a magical and immersive experience, but I was left feeling disappointed.
2. John - 1 star
I was extremely disappointed with "Magical Floating Drawings". The app was difficult to navigate, with a confusing interface that made it hard to figure out how to use the augmented reality feature. When I finally got the drawings to float, they were pixelated and poorly rendered. It was far from the magical experience I was hoping for. Save your money and look for another app that provides a better augmented reality drawing experience.
3. Emily - 2 stars
I had high hopes for "Magical Floating Drawings", but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The app was slow and laggy, making it frustrating to use. Even when the drawings did float, they seemed flat and lifeless. The lack of creative and interactive elements made the overall experience dull. I was hoping for a fun and engaging way to bring my drawings to life, but this app didn't deliver.
4. Mark - 1 star
I regret purchasing "Magical Floating Drawings". The drawings hardly floated at all, and when they did, they were barely recognizable. The app failed to capture the essence of augmented reality and instead provided a lackluster experience. The limited selection of drawings and the overall poor quality of the app made it a waste of money. I would not recommend this app to anyone seeking an enjoyable augmented reality drawing experience.
