Review: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews (Kate Daniels Series Book 1) Spoiler-free

The Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews (a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team) has a major cult following. Ilona Andrews is known for their high-octane, imaginative urban fantasy plots, strong female leads who are not dumb, annoying and useless, and compelling love interests. I was really sick and tired of reading one too many books with an annoying heroine who fell in love all too quickly with the male lead, with the plot being a flimsy backdrop for romantic shenanigans. Enter Ilona Andrews.

I first heard of Ilona Andrews last year when I read the first two books of their Hidden Legacy series when I was going through a craving of urban fantasy with romantic subplot after reading the Fever series. There was a lot of BS I had to wade through (I think everyone who reads PNR, Urban Fantasy, or Fantasy romances can relate) until I finally came across Hidden Legacy. It was a high-octane urban fantasy with an actual like-able, powerful and fun main character, a super intriguing world and a great love interest.

I know the Kate Daniels series is Ilona Andrews' most popular work but to be honest, the blurb of Magic Bites didn't really grip me when I first read it, but after seeing some friends' reviews, I decided to give it a shot.

This book has a lot of things going for it, especially things that are being built up to be paid off in the future. Kate is a loner mercenary who doesn't take anyone's crap and there are major hints that she's pretty dang powerful. Her friend/guardian was killed in a particularly brutal fashion and she has a personal interest in finding out who (or what) did this. But things get complex when 2 different factions, the shapechangers and necromancers, each think the other is responsible for various killings within their ranks. With tension already between the groups, things are about to boil over and Kate is in the middle of it all.

The setting is one in which magic and technology are in conflict- for years technology will allow for guns, computers, cars and skyscrapers. But then magic will rise rendering this tech obsolete- skyscrapers crumble, cars don't work, and people are riding horses to get anywhere. Kate Daniels is in Atlanta, and magic is on the rise.

  1. Kate Daniels is a quality female character. She's super powerful but keeps it on the down low, and doesn't brag about it for fan-service.
  2. This is not a romance-focused book at all. In fact, the romantic sideplot is very small and I think starts very believably. Kate doesn't take one look at a guy and get lost in his eyes and forget all reason (thank god).
  3. The story is pretty brutal, graphic and violent. Ilona Andrews pulled no punches and there were a few parts of the book that were disturbing, both action-wise and thematically.

Things that were meh:

  1. The world has a lot of potential and it's pretty interesting, but I really wasn't sucked into it in a visual way. It was weird seeing that Kate lived in a modern apartment, but then is riding a horse and wielding a sword. I'm sure I'll get more used to it as I read on but it was just hard for me to visualize.
  2. Some describe this book as a bit dry, and I can see where they're coming from. Although I liked Kate, I wouldn't say I was emotionally invested in her. She came off a bit too distant for me to grow attached to her.

Reviewers have mentioned that this is a fairly weak installment compared to the rest of the series, so I wasn't expecting this to be a 5 star read. Many have said to keep reading, as the second book is a vast improvement. Even the authors have mentioned that there are things they would change about this book and they aren't 100% happy with it. Nonetheless I think it did its job. It was a page turner and kept me wanting to know what happened next. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment and think that this book served to get me interested in the series and these characters.

Reviews for "Say Goodbye to Dull Hair: The Magic Clippers in Mahopac Are Here to Save the Day"

1. John Doe - 2/5 - I recently got my hair cut at Magic Clippers Mahopac and I was not impressed. The stylist seemed distracted and was rushing through the haircut. She didn't take the time to listen to what I wanted and ended up giving me a completely different style than I asked for. The prices were also quite high for the quality of service I received. I will not be returning to Magic Clippers Mahopac for my haircuts in the future.
2. Jane Smith - 1/5 - My experience at Magic Clippers Mahopac was absolutely terrible. The stylist was rude and had no regard for customer satisfaction. She used outdated techniques and didn't seem to have any knowledge of current hair trends. I left the salon feeling disappointed and frustrated with my haircut. I would strongly advise against going to Magic Clippers Mahopac if you want a quality haircut and good customer service.
3. Mike Johnson - 2/5 - I had high hopes for Magic Clippers Mahopac based on the reviews I read, but unfortunately, my experience was not positive. The stylist seemed inexperienced and struggled to cut my hair properly. She had to keep asking for assistance from other stylists, which only delayed the entire process. The salon itself was also quite dirty, and I didn't feel comfortable being there. Overall, I left feeling unsatisfied and would not recommend Magic Clippers Mahopac to others.
