In some parts of Europe, such as Germany, the majority of the accused were female, whereas, in Iceland, male witches predominated. A papal bull issued in 1484 by Pope Innocent VIII denouncing witches was seized upon by German Inquisitor Heinrich Kramer, who wrote a handbook on the identification and treatment of witches in 1486. There were various signs that a person was a witch, and there were several methods used to extract a confession from the accused.

Similarly, the Greek god Dionysus was said to have been born of a virgin mother on December 25th and was also attended by shepherds and wise men. The condemned were mostly burnt to death, with a few being beheaded. Victims were tied to a ladder that was pushed into a pyre. As final mercy, the authorities tied bags of gunpowder around the witches’ necks to hasten their deaths in the flames.

This idea can be seen in the myth of Osiris in Egyptian mythology, as well as the myth of Tammuz in Mesopotamian mythology. These stories of dying and rising gods bear similarities to the story of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. Furthermore, some argue that the portrayal of Jesus and his teachings in the New Testament bears resemblance to various pagan mythological motifs. The idea of a divine savior who sacrifices himself for the salvation of mankind can be found in numerous pagan myths, such as the story of the Norse god Baldr. Additionally, the concept of a god who is both human and divine, as seen in Jesus' claim to be the Son of God, can be found in various pagan religions.
