The Magic Flute clip is a short video excerpt from the opera "The Magic Flute" composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is a popular opera that premiered in Vienna in 1791. The clip showcases a scene from Act II, known as the "Queen of the Night Aria," which is one of the most famous and challenging soprano arias in the opera repertoire. The clip begins with the introduction of a dramatic and mysterious setting. The stage is dimly lit, and the main character, Queen of the Night, appears wearing a magnificent black gown adorned with stars. The aria starts with a fast-paced and virtuosic melody, demonstrating the Queen's vocal and dramatic power.

What a Witch's Familiar Really Is

In this installment of Practical Magic, Lisa Stardust explains witches familiars—the pets psychically connected to their witches. Always remember that magic is for believers, but this column can also simply serve as a guide to getting in touch with yourself — magically or not.

The relationship between witches and familiars runs deep. Familiars (or imps) usually are small household pets that serve as a witch’s companion. According to legend, familiars are sort of like guides, who take the form of an animal on Earth. They are loyal guardians and protectors to witches, who are sent to assist them with magic.

According to The Hoodwitch Owner and Creative Director, Bri Luna, “Familiars are not just pets, they are our truest friends and confidants. They hear and see it all, they understand and know us better than we may even know ourselves.”

Familiars are psychically connected and can telepathically communicate with each other in times of need. Magic practitioner Nina Kahn felt this way about her hamster, Bagel. “[He] became a true familiar to me,” Nina says. "I adopted him in my late teens from a friend who could no longer care for him, and immediately felt bonded. I could easily read his emotions, and he communicated with me in so many different and meaningful ways.”

Bri adds that her cat “has protected me in more ways than one. His energy is calming and very soothing and he has very unique colored eyes (orange). Just looking at him, we both understand each other without ever using words. He knows all of my moods, he enjoys watching me do tarot— at one point he even pulled cards but now he just likes to sleep on them.”

Familiars are also healers and magical practitioners in their own way. Tarot reader, witch, and color magic practitioner Sarah Potter says that her cat, Polly, “psychically chatters to me all day long and sometimes even crashes my client Tarot sessions. Because of her good sense about people, her advice is always on point, too. Polly insists on being a part of every ritual. which is why I never keep her out of any magical work I am doing.”

Psychic Stephanie Ulrich (AKA “The Snake Channeler”) receives downloads from her snakes, which are known to be super intuitive creatures. Her snakes share pivotal insights about clients during readings. Stephanie translates the messages with her clients that the snakes are telling her and lets her clients know all the pertinent information that her snakes want to share.

So, how does a witch meet their familiar? Well, they just sort of find each other. They choose to be the other’s familiar, and enter a mutually beneficial relationship.

Tarot reader, host of This is Your Magic podcast, and author Michelle Tea met her cat serendipitously, after waiting for the right familiar to “choose” her. And, “it finally happened three years ago when my cat Birthday Rainbow walked into my house, laid down and never left.”

Witch, psychic, and host of The Glitter Cast podcast Renee Watt further explains, “there is a correlation between wishing for an animal companion and having it manifest for you in serendipitous ways. Dreaming about a pet or feeling as though it communicates with you in psychic ways are also indications that you've got a familiar by your side.”

Can any animal be a witch’s familiar? Sort of, yes! Insects, cats, mice, rats, toads, ravens, and dogs are traditionally familiars. However, it depends upon how the witch and the animal connect. Sometimes two spirits (that being the witch and the familiar) want to work together and find an affinity in each other. This means that it won’t matter who the spirit belongs to, as it’s a fated meeting that draws them together as one.

Every animal has its spiritual significance in the magical world. But if we're being real, many witches have cat familiars by their sides (the tropes are true!). The reason that most witches have cat familiars is simple: According to Bri, “cats have been long admired and revered as sacred from the days of the great goddess Bastet. They remember this information and their energy and presence offered is indicative of this.”

Remember all of this the next time you play with your pet. They are the gatekeepers, protectors of your magic, and will bring you clarity. Plus, they’ll prove their loyalty by never leaving your side.

Dog Familiars – Mystical Companions of Magic

Witches have long been associated with the use of familiars, often in the form of animals such as cats, birds, or even toads. But did you know that dogs can also serve as powerful familiars for witches? These loyal companions can provide witches with a range of magical abilities and aid them in their spellcasting.

In many traditions, dogs have been viewed as sacred animals with powerful spiritual connections. Ancient Egyptians believed that the god Anubis, who presided over the dead, had the head of a jackal. In Norse mythology, the god Odin had two wolves by his side, named Geri and Freki. Dogs have also played an important role in the folklore and mythology of many other cultures around the world.

When it comes to witchcraft, dogs can serve as powerful familiars in a number of ways. They can help witches to channel their energy and focus their intentions, acting as a conduit between the physical and spiritual realms. Dogs are also known for their keen sense of smell, which can be useful in divination and other forms of psychic work.

In some traditions, dogs are associated with the element of fire, which represents passion, creativity, and transformation. This makes them ideal familiars for witches who are working on spells or rituals related to these themes. Dogs can also be useful for witches who are working with the element of air, as they are known for their ability to communicate and make connections with others.

One of the most powerful magical abilities of dogs as familiars is their ability to protect their owners. Dogs are fiercely loyal and will go to great lengths to defend their owners from harm. This makes them ideal familiars for witches who are working with protection magic, or who simply want a guardian by their side as they navigate the challenges of life.

Another magical ability of dogs as familiars is their ability to help with healing. Dogs are often used in therapy and other healing practices, as their presence can be calming and comforting. Witches who are working with healing magic may find that a dog familiar can help them to channel healing energy more effectively.

Dogs can also be useful in spellcasting, as they can help to ground and center a witch’s energy. When performing a spell, a witch can have their dog familiar sit by their side or lie at their feet. This can help to create a sense of stability and balance, which can be useful in maintaining focus and directing energy.

Some witches even use their dogs as part of their divination practices. Dogs are known for their ability to sense things that humans cannot, and can be used to detect the presence of spirits or other energies. A witch may use their dog familiar to help them determine the outcome of a particular situation, or to provide insights into the spiritual realm.

In addition to their magical abilities, dogs can also provide emotional support and companionship to their witch owners. The bond between a witch and their dog familiar can be incredibly strong, providing a source of comfort and strength during difficult times.

Of course, not all dogs are suited to serve as familiars. Just like humans, dogs have their own unique personalities and energies, and not all dogs will be a good fit for every witch. It’s important for witches to choose a dog familiar that they feel a strong connection with, and to ensure that the dog is treated with respect and kindness at all times.

If you’re considering working with a dog familiar, there are a few things you can do to strengthen your bond with your new companion. Spend time with your dog, taking them for walks, playing with them, and simply enjoying their company. Offer them treats and affection, and make sure they feel loved and valued.

You may also want to incorporate your dog familiar into your daily spiritual practice. This could involve meditating with your dog, including them in your rituals, or simply lighting a candle or offering a prayer of gratitude for their presence in your life.

It’s important to remember that working with a dog familiar is a serious commitment, and should not be taken lightly. Dogs require time, attention, and care, and it’s important for witches to ensure that they are providing their dog with everything they need to live a happy and healthy life.

In addition, witches should also be aware of the potential risks involved in working with any kind of familiar. While dogs are generally considered to be safe and loyal companions, there is always the possibility of miscommunication or misunderstandings. Witches should always exercise caution and respect when working with their dog familiar, and be mindful of their own intentions and energy.

Despite these risks, working with a dog familiar can be an incredibly rewarding and transformative experience for both the witch and their companion. Dogs have long been known for their powerful spiritual connections, and by working with a dog familiar, witches can tap into this energy and use it to enhance their magical practice.

The aria starts with a fast-paced and virtuosic melody, demonstrating the Queen's vocal and dramatic power. The lyrics of the aria depict the Queen of the Night's anger and frustration as she demands her daughter, Pamina, to kill Sarastro, the high priest of the temple. She threatens to disown Pamina if she does not comply with her request.

Mythology and Folklore

Throughout history, dogs have played an important role in mythology and folklore, and many cultures have associated them with magic and the supernatural. Here are some examples of how dogs have been featured in mythology and folklore:

  1. The Celtic C?n Annwn: In Welsh mythology, the C?n Annwn were a pack of white hounds that were associated with the Otherworld. They were believed to be the hunting dogs of the king of the Otherworld, and were often heard baying at night. Seeing the C?n Annwn was considered to be a bad omen, as it was believed that they were coming to collect the souls of the dead.
  2. The Greek goddess Hecate: In Greek mythology, Hecate was the goddess of witchcraft, magic, and the moon. She was often depicted with a pack of dogs, which were believed to be her companions and protectors. These dogs were often depicted as black, and were associated with the night and the underworld.
  3. The Norse wolf Fenrir: In Norse mythology, Fenrir was a giant wolf who was the son of the god Loki. Fenrir was prophesied to bring about the end of the world, and was eventually bound by the gods. Many scholars believe that the image of the wolf familiar in witchcraft may have originated from the image of Fenrir.
  4. The witch’s black dog familiar: In English folklore, the black dog was often associated with witchcraft and the devil. It was believed that witches could transform into black dogs, and that these dogs were their familiars. Seeing a black dog was considered to be a bad omen, and it was believed that they could bring sickness or death.

By understanding the role that dogs have played in mythology and folklore, we can gain a deeper appreciation for their connection to magic and the supernatural. Whether we see them as protectors, guides, or companions, dogs have a long and fascinating history in the world of magic and mysticism.
