Exploring the Different Types of Samhain Witch Stakes

By admin

Samhain witch stakes were wooden stakes used during the ancient festival of Samhain. Samhain is a Gaelic festival celebrated on October 31st, marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It is believed that during this time, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, allowing spirits and fairies to pass through to the mortal realm. In Celtic mythology, it was believed that witches would gather on Samhain night to perform rituals and cast spells. These witches were seen as a threat to the community, as their powers could cause harm to humans and livestock. To ward off these malevolent witches and protect themselves, people would create witch stakes.

There are no restrictions on the race of a witch, but dhampir, fetchling, ganzi, kitsune, sprite, gnoll, and automaton adventurers often become witches. To ward off these malevolent witches and protect themselves, people would create witch stakes. Witch stakes were typically made from wood and would be carved with symbols or runes to repel evil spirits. How can the Witch Archetype gain access to Hex Cantrips?

I have a martial character who, while reasonably intelligent, is not nearly as brilliant as they think they are. It seems appropriate for their free archetype to be Witch with the Rune Patron, as they would want the extra knowledge. I am particularly drawn to the Hex Cantrip Discern Secrets. When I look at the Archetype, however, I see

Choose a patron; you gain a familiar with two common cantrips of your choice from your chosen patron's tradition, but aside from the tradition, you don't gain any other effects the patron would usually grant.

This implies that you don't get access to the patron Hex Cantrip as part of the Archetype. I also don't see an archetype feat that would give access to the Hex cantrip, either. What am I missing here?

Samhain witch stakes

The stakes were believed to disrupt the witches' power and prevent them from entering the property. Samhain witch stakes were also used in a communal ritual known as "Beating the Bounds." During this ceremony, the community would walk along the boundaries of their land, carrying the witch stakes and beating them against the ground. This act symbolized the warding off of evil spirits and witches, ensuring the protection of the community for the coming year. While the belief in witches and the use of witch stakes has diminished over time, Samhain is still celebrated today in various forms, such as Halloween. The concept of warding off evil spirits and protecting oneself from Halloween witches can be seen in the tradition of carving pumpkins and placing them on doorsteps to deter evil spirits. In conclusion, Samhain witch stakes played a significant role in protecting communities during the festival of Samhain. They served as a physical and symbolic defense against witches and evil spirits, ensuring the well-being and safety of the community during this mystical time of year..
