Rigoletto is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi, first performed in 1851. The opera is based on Victor Hugo's play "Le roi s'amuse" and tells the tragic story of the hunchback jester, Rigoletto, and his daughter, Gilda. One of the main themes of the opera is the curse that haunts Rigoletto and brings about his downfall. The curse is cast by Count Monterone, whose daughter has been seduced and dishonored by the Duke of Mantua. Monterone confronts the Duke and Rigoletto at court, but they both mock him. Monterone then curses them, revealing the corrupt and immoral nature of the court and the characters involved.

If you want to get in on a costumed Halloween bicycle ride in coastal Alabama, the time to get serious is now. Witches plan ahead. Who knew?
While “deadline” might be a frightful word, tickets are on sale for several Witches Ride-style events, and at least one of them has a price increase coming up. For some, the supply of tickets is limited.
A look at where witches are rolling in the Mobile area and when:
Gulf Shores: Haunted Hustle 5k, Fun Run and Witches on Wheels
Proceeds from this city-supported event will benefit the Dolphin Foundation for Education and Arts, which also will be selling beer, wine and other refreshments on-site. The Witches on Wheels ride kicks off the festivities at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22. “Witches and Warlocks are invited to jump on their brooms (bicycles will suffice) and parade around the Town Green throwing beads and candy to bystanders. Approximate distance is 2 miles.” The cost to ride is $25 before Oct. 1, and early birds also are guaranteed to receive a T-shirt in their preferred size. Fairhope Witches Ride
These witches are serious about this event starting about 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27. “THIS IS A WITCH-ONLY EVENT. Please leave your husbands, boyfriends, significant others, children, pets and politics at home for this ladies-only gathering. Brooms and bikes are welcome. Several hundred witches will be riding through the streets of beautiful downtown Fairhope followed by a Witches Ball at The Halstead Amphitheater. This year’s festivities will include music provided by the fabulous Mr. Big and the Rhythm Sisters. Several food trucks will be on the premises throughout the evening. All witches must be at least 21 years of age! *no e-bikes* *no golf carts* *no walking witches* *no pets*.” Registration is $50 through Eventbrite, with proceeds benefiting the Baldwin Humane Society.
Atmore Witches Ride
Main Street Atmore presents its second Witches Ride, rolling from Atmore City Hall at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. Registration is $20 for bikes and brooms (i.e. walkers), $50 for golf carts. Foley Witches Ride
The Society of Black Hats (“Witches with a Cause”) presents the Foley Witches Ride at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, starting in Heritage Park. Food trucks will be on site and an after-party will feature music by Disco Kiss. Basic Witch rider tickets are $40 through Oct. 29 and include a ticket to the after-party and a T-shirt. Sales of extra T-shirts, or shirts for non-riders, end Oct. 1. Non-rider after-party tickets are $20. A limited number of golf cart passes are available; requirements include verification of suitable insurance. For details, email [email protected]. Proceeds benefit organizations that “provide food, shelter, and financial assistance to women and children in Baldwin County.” Online registration is available through Eventbrite.
Bay Minette Witches Ride
Organizers recently advised interested witches and warlocks that the 2022 event will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, with a goal of raising $5,000 for the North Baldwin Animal Shelter. Registration will open Oct. 1. For updates, see www.facebook.com/bayminettewitches.
Dauphin Island: Massacre Island Haunted Bike Ride
Tickets have been on sale since early September, and organizers have recently warned that they expect a sellout for their 6th annual event. The ride rolls at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, from Green Park. Longer than most such events, the five-mile route passes “some of Dauphin Island’s most haunted spots.” Tickets are $15 and are available through Eventbrite. There will be no late registration on-site, and participants must be 18 or older. Proceeds benefit the Animal Rescue Foundation.
Mobile Witches Ride
The 6th edition of the event will take place Sunday, Oct. 30, in downtown Mobile, with riders rolling at 5 p.m. It benefits the Delta Dogs program, an organization that provides free veterinary care to “the pets of Mobile’s community in need.” Participants must be 18 to ride, but children are welcome to watch the event and attend the accompanying Black Hat Block Party for free. Male witches are welcome. Early registration is $30 through noon on Oct. 20; only those who register early will get event T-shirts. Register online via Eventbrite.
