Proud to see a Mexican movie in this site. Those kind of movies were very famous in those days.

Subject: Almost brilliant

There's a lot of ham acting by the villain, a walking Aztec mummy, guns that make gunfire sounds but don't fire bullets, a luchador, and a snake pit. I would've liked more mummy action, but it's still fun.

Oh the cheese. I love these sixties Mexican imports. A masked wrestler helps a scientist (I think) defeat the curse of an Aztec Mummy (yes, again!) and save his daughter (also again). There's an annoying kid and lots of inexplicable events complete with the old, "let's tie him up and leave him to die while he escapes" routine. 4 out of 5 cheese wedges! Be warned, it drags.

The Curse of the Aztec Mummy

The evil Dr. Krupp, once again trying to get possession of the Aztec princess Xochitl's jewels, hypnotizes her current reincarnation, Flor, to get her to reveal the jewels' location - Xochitl's tomb. Confusion reigns as Krupp and his thugs are opposed by Flor's lover, Dr. Almada, his assistant, and wrestling superhero, El Angel. Krupp finally meets his match, however, when he comes up against Popoca, the warrior mummy who guards Xochitl's tomb.

Mexico What the actual…..I thought I was getting a horror film about an Aztec Mummy (title and all that) and instead I got an annoying luchador wrestler hopping around speaking like the cartoon version of Spiderman from the 1960’s. So this masked dude, is a superhero I imagine, except he looks bloody awful in the fight and bothersome in the conversation. There is a Mummy thrown in there somewhere and to be fair, it looks half decent, very effective in its black and white vision in fact but the story is absurd and I am 99% convinced this is part of some Mexican franchise I am unaware of, if not then this is one…

Some real strong Saturday morning vibes here. This is my first Aztec Mummy movie, since I can't find the first one I guess this will have to do. The most obvious flaw here is the lack of Aztec Mummy in the Aztec Mummy movie. It's almost an after thought, with most if the runtime being dedicated to Angel, a Dollar Store Santo, who is trying to stop the evil Doctor Krupp. Old Krupp is a mustache twirling bad guy who uses mind control and wants an ancient breastplate. one that just happens to be guarded by the titular Mummy. Angel is definitely no Santo, in fact he's pretty lame. He spends most of the movie needing rescued, even having to rely…

THIS SHIT ROCKED . Let's get this out of the way: if you come to this movie expecting some amazing mummy action, you will be disappointed. The mummy DOES appear and absOLUTELY kicks ass - but that's at the very end of the flick, which is a really weird flex but okay. Instead of being a gothic horror like the first movie, THE CURSE OF THE AZTEC MUMMY instead chooses to become a noir crime thriller - and boy howdy is it awesome. Much like most other Mexican genre cinema at the time, a luchador eventually shows up and absolutely rocks it. I also was really thankful that this film took some time to recap the events of the first…

A considerable improvement over the original, now with a lucha libre element with Crox Alvarado playing an alter ego luchador to his sidekick character, dual role that is. Is still far from being the cult classic it could be, the noirish gangster plot overtakes the story, and the mummy is once more barely in this. Not bad, not great.

I can honestly say this is unlike any movie I've ever seen, it's similar to stuff I've seen before but the Mexican take on the genre is just so different from what I've experienced. I think I've managed to avoid Lucha Libre characters in my movie & wrestling experiences. I don't think it's fair to say this is a bad movie for what it is. If it was a friday night at the drive-in with my friends this would be amazing. But it's a saturday night in my bedroom alone so not the right atmosphere. Also it seems to be part of…

I still have a lot of research to do before I'll feel comfortable stating this definitively, but it seems like this movie may have been more influential than I gave it credit for. While the enmascarado character of El Ángel may be somewhat clumsy an unimpressive in this movie, I would imagine the introduction of this (eerily similar looking) crime-fighting luchador may have set the stage for El Santo's prodigious film career!

Probably my favorite in the Aztec mummy films. There's like 5 of them and this one had the best acting and plot. It's still a shitty B-movie with terrible fight scenes, but the movie is kind of scary. The mummy is super fucking creepy. Kind of slow paced, but all worth it for the end with the epic fight with the mummy.

Yksi meksikolaisen fantasiakauhun erityispiirre on alueen historiasta ammentava atsteekkimuumion hahmo.

it’s 50s horror from Mexico. You know exactly what you’re getting into. I think half of this movie is our lead being kidnapped and beaten up and kind of escaping over and over. it happens at least two to three times☠️ Absolutely wild to think about how horror would change drastically just 3 years from this. Thank god.

Hooptober X.1… One half? Dammit! I’ll be bouncing around my list this year instead of trying to tackle it alphabetically. Hope that’s okay. Thought I’d kick things off with the two mummy movies on my list, but thanks to a misdirected Letterboxd link to Plex, I’m watching The Curse of the Aztec Mummy instead of The Aztec Mummy. Same director, same year, same great Tana Leaf taste. The Dick Tracy influence right out the gate is jarring in this one. Gimmicky gangsters Lilac and Bear scheme to get their supposed mad scientist boss, “The Bat,” out of jail. I’m into it, though. “He grafted on parts that didn’t belong to the animal’s anatomy, and, naturally, the results were horrible.”

November Horror Hunt #41
Day 22: Watch a Mummy movie More of a crime thriller with a little bit if Mummy action at the end rather than a horror film about a Mummy. The Mummy had a cool design, but the quality of the film was pretty bad, so you don't get the best look at him. A very short runtime with very little Mummy screentime. I wanted to watch the first Aztec Mummy, but was unable to find it in English, luckily this film gives a recap of the first, so it's easy to watch this one independently.

After spending most of the first installment in the shadows, caped, in a black mask, plotting as the sketchy "The BAT", actor Luis Aceves Castañeda makes up here, in the double role of Dr. Krupp and Murcielago.
"La maldición de la momia Azteca" as a 2nd installment, starts off rather promising, where director Portillo's film already streched mash up of ancient-curse, gangster- crime-angle and incompetent-luchador-blend, keeps it tame briefly, just enough to catch up with the convulsion of its narrative.
"Murcielago" escapes from police with the help of his fedora cronies, while challenged by the oversized masked "El Angel" (Crox Alvarado) - who seems to be not very effective at countering villains in rusty style lucha libre moves.
