Salem’s witch trials are a definitive example of intolerance and injustice in American history. This exhibition examines the extraordinary series of events in 1692-3 that led to the deaths of 25 innocent women, men and children who were wrongfully convicted of crimes. More than 300 years later, the personal tragedies and grievous wrongs that occurred still provoke us to reflect and reckon with the experiences of those involved.
The exhibition tells this story through court documents and authentic historic objects presented as tangible fragments directly tied to people in Salem and nearby communities in the late 17th century. A handwritten petition, a carved loom, a walking stick — each illuminates an aspect of individuals who lived through Salem’s witch trials and serves as a reminder of the real people impacted by these harrowing events.
Many Salem area residents realized the judicial proceedings were flawed and the trials unjust. As early as the late 1690s, victims and their communities took action in attempts to restore the innocence of those wrongly accused and convicted. While the trauma and loss can never be fully repaired, these tangible steps over the centuries have made progress toward healing a deeply fractured community. The process continues today.

The barren plains returned to their desolate state, as if the enchantment had never occurred. The spectators were left stunned, their hearts longing for the return of the magical moment they had just experienced. For days, weeks, and even years, those who had witnessed the event sought to recreate the magic they had briefly tasted. They scoured the barren plains, hoping to find a trace of the enchantment that had captivated them. Their efforts, however, were in vain, as the magical moment remained elusive. The memory of that fleeting moment lingered in their minds, tauntingly reminding them of what they had lost. It became a symbol of the ephemeral nature of beauty and joy, a reminder to appreciate and cherish the present. The magical moment had vanished, leaving behind a sense of longing and the bittersweet knowledge that some experiences are meant to be cherished but not captured. In their quest for the magical moment, the spectators discovered that true magic lies not in the external world but within themselves. They realized that the power to create enchantment resides in their hearts and minds. And so, they began to cultivate a sense of wonder, opening themselves to the possibilities that exist all around. Though the magical moment had vanished in the barren plains, its impact remained. It had awakened a dormant spark within each witness, igniting a thirst for more magical moments. And so, they set out on a new journey, seeking to create their own enchantment and, in doing so, finding a way to keep the magic alive, even in the most barren of places..
