“Priscilla was speaking my language,” says Donni Davy, creative director and cofounder of Half Magic Beauty. “I thought [the makeup] was a character in the film. I was so taken aback and altered a little bit by the part in the film where you see that Elvis is pushing her to go with heavier eye makeup and dye her hair. It’s so dark and twisted because he is turning her into this vampy character, this sex kitten, full transformation from school girl to glamorous icon, and it kind of became her identity. Hitting limited theaters October 27 and nationwide November 3, Priscilla is based on “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley with Sandra Harmon and stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi. It follows the unseen side of Elvis and Priscilla's long courtship and tempestuous marriage, from an army base in Germany to Graceland. In the press notes, Coppola shares that hair and makeup are major storytelling devices in the film, beginning with the very first time Priscilla draws on her signature winged eyeliner as a teenager. “It was just such a different era, but I do enjoy Priscilla’s commitment to glamor,” Coppola says. “I thought a lot about the fact that she put on false eyelashes the moment she went into labor, which is something she wrote about in her book. There was always this feeling of being watched.”

Staying true to Priscilla’s real-life aesthetic was crucial to Jo-Ann MacNeil, the film’s makeup designer. “I've been a lifelong Elvis fan, but I was drawn to the telling of the story from a different perspective, from Priscilla's view,” MacNeil says. “I was inspired to tell her story by being as accurate and detailed as I could to her personal makeup style and look. We started Priscilla simple and fresh-faced, almost a no-makeup look until she met Elvis. During the courting process she starts to add a little makeup: mascara, lipstick, rouge. When she moves to Graceland, Elvis takes her for a makeover, which she embraces and starts to wear more and more makeup at his request. We carried this through the ‘60s. In the early ‘70s as the relationship breaks down, so does her makeup. She stripped it back and became more natural looking, finding her independence through her look."

When Coppola came up with the idea of developing a makeup kit to recreate Priscilla’s look, Davy knew the perfect trio of products already existed. “We have these three super beginner-friendly tools that can literally give you the iconic Priscilla look,” Davy says. “These products will enable people to claim a piece of this Priscilla winged liner trend, which is going strong. Winged liner has always been iconic and continues to be every time it's reintroduced into entertainment or the spotlight in some way; it just keeps on being relevant.”

While Davy picked what went inside the kit, the packaging is all A24. “We really wanted A24’s creative side to do that and make it really special and feel authentic to the A24 brand,” Davy says. “It was exciting because we didn't use our typical Half Magic packaging; we really wanted it to feel like this beautiful collaboration with A24. They designed the box, put their aesthetic and their creative on it, and it doesn't look like any of our other items that we sell.”

What makes this collaboration unique is that it’s as authentic as it gets—the makeup kit allows you to create the most iconic look of the film, in which the hair and makeup aesthetic is so integral to the character and part of the storyline. “I have seen other brands do makeup collabs like Barbie, The Little Mermaid, even Harry Potter,” Davy says. “But the products in those particular collabs don't relate to the iconic look in the film. They’re throwing a movie name on a palette that literally has no connection, and the colors in it are not even colors that you actually see on their characters. There's this awesome piece of authenticity here with this collab where it just makes sense. There's a reason.”

More makeup partnerships are on the way from A24 and their film and television projects, which Davy is excited about. “That is what I really sunk my teeth into with Euphoria,” she says. “After season one came out and talking about the storytelling of the makeup, that's what put me in this position where I am now where I have a makeup line. I have this platform to talk about that because the makeup, hair and costumes are so instrumental in storytelling; they add so much texture to the characters, because there's only so much you can say in a script. All those visual aspects give you so much more information on who these people are. When they show up looking this certain way, you automatically start making connections and understanding a little more about where they're coming from.”
