Trailer: Amazon’s Just Add Magic cooks up a third season this January

“Don’t let this psych you out, but magic is real…” That’s the sound of Amazon’s most underrated family show returning for a third season, as Just Add Magic whips up another helping this month.

The original live-action kids’ series aimed at children aged 6 through 11 is based on Cindy Callaghan’s book of the same name. It sees three girls – Kelly, Darbie and Hannah – discover an old recipe book belonging to Kelly’s grandma. When a “Shut-Em-Up Shortcake” causes her brother to lose his voice, though, they realise it’s more Merlin than Mary Berry. Extant’s Olivia Sanabia stars as Kelly, alongside Abby Donnelly (Suburgatory) as Darbie and Aubrey Miller (Austin & Ally) as Hannah.

The show returned for Season 2 in 2016, introducing an old enemy (Chuck) from the 1950s, returning Grandma Quinn (Dee Wallace) to normal and expanding the comedy’s ambitious scope to become a generations-spanning, decade-hopping adventure.

“A confident second season that’s deliciously entertaining for all ages,” we wrote in our review of the show’s sophomore helping. “A witty, funny, tense supernatural show with an over-arching plot and realistic relationships? That Buffy meets Bake Off recipe has lost none of its charm.”

Now, after a very long wait, Just Add Magic returns for a third season at the start of the new year, as our trio attempt to expose a new magical threat, known only as The Night Bandit. To do so, they must go back to the 1800s and to 1975, as well as visit the future to meet grown-up versions of themselves. With every new recipe comes a new price, though, promising drama and danger as well as light entertainment.

Just Add Magic Season 3 premieres on Amazon Prime Video on 31st January. Here’s the trailer:

Just Add Magic returns this January

20th December 2016

Amazon’s Just Add Magic will return for Season 2 this January.

The original live-action kids series aimed at families and children aged 6 through 11 is based on Cindy Callaghan’s book of the same name.

“A charming treat that viewers of all ages can savour,” we wrote in our review of Season 1, describing it has “sweet, folding in sincere lessons about friendship, honesty and teamwork, but never sickly”.

It was no surprise, then, when Amazon ordered a second helping of the series. Indeed, it has gone on to become the most-streamed Amazon Original kids series in its 6-11 bracket.

Season 2 continues with the girls working together to unravel the mystery surrounding the reappearance of an old enemy threatening to steal their magical cookbook. Along the way, the girls’ Last-Ditch Layer Cake breaks every spell in town, which miraculously brings Grandma Quinn (Dee Wallace, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) back to her normal self, however it also brings back an old enemy… Chuck Hankins. Chuck disappeared when he was a teenager, but when he returns 50 years later, he hasn’t aged a day. As Chuck begins to meddle with the girls’ lives, they must put aside their summer of fun to stop the magic falling into the wrong hands.

“Kids and families have embraced Kelly, Darbie and Hannah and we’re excited to debut another season next month,” says Tara Sorensen, Head of Kids Programming at Amazon Studios. “There’s more suspense and magic in the new season as the girls’ mastery of magic will be called upon to protect their bond. The first season led our customers to extend beyond the show with family cooking time and hope the new season will continue that tradition.”

Season 2 will premiere on Friday 13th January, with Season 1 now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, alongside a Just Add Magic Halloween special. The show is will also be available as part of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, the site’s all-you-can-eat subscription service for kids. FreeTime Unlimited is available exclusively on Amazon devices including Amazon Fire TV and Fire tablets, and a year-long subscription is included with every Fire Kids Edition.
