• 4 years ago 4 years agoMickey Mouse will never enter the public domain. His rights have been up for renewal several times in the past and have always been renewed. Disney makes too much money through his merchandise to give him up.
Same with most long-running characters, no one wants to lose exclusive rights to money-makers.

They'd probably start to push Donald Duck or Goofy a little harder if they wanted to keep a Disney original character to stay the mascot, but it would be Donald since he has a show running at the moment and Goofy hasn't done anything massive in years. That is if they want to go down that route, they could start pushing some of their owned properties like Star Wars or Marvel.
I'd also like to point out that Peter Pan can't be used as a Disney property as it's already public domain as of 2007.

In this day and age, their's so much controversy around casting characters in films, take the casting for the new Little Mermaid for example. People are mad, for no reason. Someone will be upset if they have a white Disney princess as the mascot and others will be mad if a minority princess is picked. It'll be eaiser and safer to use an athromorphic character since it skips the potential race backlash.
Even if they did decide to use a princess, none of them deserve it over the others, they're all just as memorable as each other. Although the newer princesses would have a better chance since they're in the spotlight more often than older characters. On top of that, most of the old princesses, are public domain characters.
In other words, only Merida, Anna & Elsa, Tiana and maybe one or two others could be picked since they're original IP's. Curveball, they make it Baymax from Big Hero Six.
