Steve Haddock, a bioluminescence specialist at the nearby Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, told local TV station KSBW that he suspects a certain type of phytoplankton, microscopic organisms that float near the surface of the ocean and serve as food for a wide range of sea animals, are responsible for the spectacle. "It is almost certainly a dinoflagellate bloom. We are also seeing relative high bioluminescence with our instruments here in Monterey Bay," he said.
