Grand Rapids’ Josh Pagan focused on Golden Gloves glory after making USA Boxing Nationals quarterfinals

Josh Pagan’s father had a hunch years ago that boxing was in his son’s future.

“I remember when he was seven or eight, and I was taking pictures of the kids, and he always had a boxing pose. I’m like, Huh,” Victor Pagan said.

Did that hunch ever play out.

Pagan, 21, will be one of the boxers to watch when the DeltaPlex Arena in Walker hosts the Michigan Golden Gloves State Championships this weekend, with the semifinals Friday and and finals Saturday. Pagan is coming off a big West Michigan Golden Gloves Tournament that saw the Kenowa Hills graduate earn Most Outstanding Fighter honors.

The coronavirus pandemic shut down competition for about a year, but he returned to the ring in March for the USA Boxing National Championships in Shreveport, La. and he advanced to the quarterfinals at Elite 138 pounds. He is currently fifth in the nation in USA Boxing Elite Men’s Rankings in his division.

“Consistency is definitely the biggest thing that has gotten me this far,” Pagan said. “Back when the pandemic started, I continued working out. Even without a fight for the whole year, I continued to train the whole year and stayed consistent and perfected my jabs, trying to get better every day.”

Pagan will receive a first-round bye Friday and compete for a state title on Saturday. Pagan will take on the winner of Friday’s Nicolas Alonzi-Marcos Saucedo bout, with the winner advancing to the Golden Gloves National Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 9-14.

Pagan will be going for his third state championship this weekend. He lost his first bout at nationals after winning the 2017 state crown and advanced to the national quarterfinals a year later.

“I lost in the first round in ’17, but I learned from my mistakes, and in ’18, I made it to the quarterfinals,” Pagan said. “My goal is to win state and go (to nationals) and win it all. I am the most confident that I have ever been. I have been putting in so much work, and so much sacrifice has been put into this. I have been very dedicated to what I have been doing. I feel great.”

Victor Pagan recognizes a talented boxer when he sees one. After all, Pagan competed in the mid-1980s, winning a state Novice Super Heavyweight championship in 1986.

“I always wanted to be like my dad, so learning that he used to box motivated me to start doing it,” Pagan said. “We always watched boxing. I was interested from a young age and have been doing it since. I enjoy traveling and meeting new people and facing the best and seeing the best in the country. It is such an amazing experience. It is a very disciplined sport.”

Victor was quick to point out that said his son is much more passionate about the sport than he ever was. His son started boxing eight years ago.

“He did get the passion from me telling him stories, but he has taken it to another level,” Victor Pagan said. “I boxed on and off for three years, but I didn’t have the passion for it that he has.

“I started my older son training and Josh told me he wanted to fight. I told him he was too small, that he will have his turn. But once he started, he has been so into it. He is so strict on himself. I don’t have to tell him to do anything. He does it all on his own, running and training. He is dedicated to what he is doing.”

Tickets for this weekend’s tournament are available online at https://deltaplex.com/events/. Boxing begins at 7 p.m. both days.
