There was once an old tale that spread throughout the village of Willowbrook about a witch named Sonh. She was said to have lived deep within the dark forest, where she practiced her dark arts and caused chaos among the townspeople. The villagers lived in constant fear of her, whispering her name in hushed voices and avoiding the forest at all costs. Sonh was believed to possess incredible powers, capable of curses and spells that could harm even the strongest of men. The villagers shared stories of loved ones falling mysteriously ill or crops failing after crossing Sonh's path. It seemed that no one was safe from her dark intentions.

Scroll, varies

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher. If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can read the scroll and cast its spell without providing any material components. Otherwise, the scroll is unintelligible. Casting the spell by reading the scroll requires the spell’s normal casting time. Once the spell is cast, the words on the scroll fade, and it crumbles to dust. If the casting is interrupted, the scroll is not lost.

If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals 10 + the spell’s level. On a failed check, the spell disappears from the scroll with no other effect.

The level of the spell on the scroll determines the spell’s saving throw DC and attack bonus, as well as the scroll’s rarity, as shown in the Spell Scroll table.

Spell Level Rarity Save DC Attack Bonus
Cantrip Common 13 +5
1st Common 13 +5
2nd Uncommon 13 +5
3rd Uncommon 15 +7
4th Rare 15 +7
5th Rare 17 +9
6th Very rare 17 +9
7th Very rare 18 +10
8th Very rare 18 +10
9th Legendary 19 +11

A wizard spell on a spell scroll can be copied just as spells in spellbooks can be copied. When a spell is copied from a spell scroll, the copier must succeed on an Intelligence (Arcana) check with a DC equal to 10 + the spell’s level. If the check succeeds, the spell is successfully copied. Whether the check succeeds or fails, the spell scroll is destroyed.

How do spell scrolls work?

Spell scrolls are one use consumable items in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition that allow characters to cast the spell contained within the scroll without expending a spell slot.

There are a lot of rules and conditions around using spell scrolls. We’ll take a look at them in this post.

Personally I (and many other DMs) find the rules as written around spell scrolls somewhat limiting so I’ll also introduce you to some of the common homebrew rules that have evolved around the use of spell scrolls in D&D games.

It seemed that no one was safe from her dark intentions. However, as the years went by, the village noticed a change in Sonh. She no longer appeared as menacing or as powerful as she once did.

What are Spell Scrolls?

In DnD 5e, spell scrolls are magical items that allow magic users to cast the spell on the scroll without needing to provide material components or use a spell slot.

This is pretty massive actually, as spell slots are precious resources!

Material components for some of the larger hitting spells can be hard to come by and worthy of a quest in their own right.

The words on a spell scroll are written as a mystical cipher, unintelligible to most normal folk.

Once used, the words on the scroll fades and it crumbles to dust (DMG, pg 200).

Spell scrolls produce the effect of a real spell and range from relatively common cantrip scrolls right up to legendary artifacts containing the most powerful 9th level spells.

Their cost and abilities reflect the power of the spell they contain. The rarer and more powerful scrolls have proportionally higher spell save DCs and Attack Bonuses.

You can use this table below to check the power, rarity, DC and attack bonus of a spell scroll you wish to use.

I’ve included a suggested price for spell scrolls depending on level. Note, I used the Magic Item Rarity table (page 135, DMG) as a basis of determining cost of scrolls.

It’s worth mentioning that “spell scrolls” are different to “scrolls”, such as the “Scroll of Protection” (yes, I know, confusingly similar names).

The main difference is that scrolls such as the “Scroll of Protection” don’t entirely mimic spells in their full capacity, and they can be used by anybody, caster or not.

The rumors swirled that she was growing weaker, the magic fading from her grasp. The villagers dared to hope that perhaps her powers were waning and that their fears would soon be put to rest. One day, a brave young woman named Elara decided to venture into the forest, determined to confront Sonh and put an end to her reign of darkness. Armed with courage and a sprinkle of hope, she set out on a path known only to her. The villagers watched in both anticipation and trepidation as Elara disappeared into the depths of the forbidden forest. Days turned into weeks, and the village anxiously awaited Elara's return. Time seemed to stand still as they wondered if she had succeeded or fallen victim to Sonh's wrath. Then, finally, one sunny morning, a weary and dirt-streaked Elara emerged from the forest, a victorious smile on her face. The news soon spread like wildfire through the village: Sonh was dead. Elara had successfully vanquished the witch and put an end to the years of torment and fear. The villagers rejoiced, their fears now replaced with newfound hope and a sense of freedom. With Sonh's death, a sense of tranquility settled over Willowbrook. The forest, once dark and foreboding, was now seen as a place of beauty and serenity. The villagers reclaimed the land, no longer cowering in the face of Sonh's shadow. The tale of Sonh the witch who died would forever be etched in the annals of Willowbrook's history. It served as a reminder that even the most feared and powerful of beings could someday be defeated. The villagers would forever be grateful to Elara, the young woman who had single-handedly freed them from the clutches of darkness. And so, life moved on in Willowbrook, with the memory of Sonh slowly fading away. The village blossomed, and its people thrived, knowing that they were no longer at the mercy of a witch's curse. Sonh may have been dead, but her legacy would forever remain a cautionary tale, a reminder that even the darkest nights eventually give way to dawn..
