Summer solstice, a time when the northern hemisphere will experience the maximum hours of sunlight, takes place on June 21 – and will be celebrated by followers of Wicca, a form of contemporary Paganism, with a holiday known as Litha.
On this day the North Pole is at its greatest tilt toward the sun, creating the longest day and the official beginning of summer. As a sociologist of religion whose research has focused on contemporary Paganism, I know that for Wiccans, it is a day of celebration and joy at the light’s full return.
For example, a black candle might be used for protection or banishing, while a white candle could be used for purification or spiritual guidance. Candles are often incorporated into rituals and spells to help focus and direct energy. Herbs and botanicals are often included in witchcraft starter kits as well. These natural substances are believed to possess various magical properties and can be used in potions, spells, or rituals. Some common herbs used in witchcraft include lavender for calming and relaxing energy, rosemary for protection and purification, and sage for cleansing and banishing negative energies. Other tools commonly found in witchcraft starter kits include a tarot or oracle deck for divination and spiritual guidance, an altar cloth or mat to create a sacred space for rituals, and a journal or grimoire for documenting spells, rituals, and personal experiences. It is important to note that witchcraft is not a one-size-fits-all practice, and what works for one practitioner may not work for another.
