Wicca Harvest Celebrations: Honoring the Ancestors and the Circle of Life

Wicca is a modern pagan religion that celebrates different seasons and cycles of the year, including an important harvest celebration. This harvest celebration is known as Mabon, which falls around September 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and March 21st in the Southern Hemisphere. Mabon is a time to give thanks for the bountiful harvest and to reflect on the balance between light and darkness as the days become shorter and the nights longer. It is a time to honor and appreciate the fruits of the earth, as well as to recognize the cycles of life and death. During the Wicca harvest celebration of Mabon, many Wiccans gather together in groups or covens to perform rituals and ceremonies. These rituals often involve offering thanks to the gods and goddesses of the harvest, as well as to the earth itself for its abundance.



Salem Witch Trials Role-Play

With Halloween right around the corner, I thought it would be fitting and fun to do a lesson focused around the subject of the Salem Witch Trials. I had this in mind as being an end-of-unit activity that would have students use what they’ve learned about this time in history. Considering the subject matter, this lesson would most likely come into play with 9th or 10th grade students. This lesson will focus around the essential questions of: What was the social climate of 17th century Salem? What connections can we draw between 17th century Salem and today?

With that being said, I plan on briefly summarizing main events of the Salem Witch Trials at the start of the lesson in order to set the tone for my class. Then, I will explain to my students that they will be using what they’ve learned to try and place themselves at that point in history. Students will then draw slips of paper that determine whether they will be a “towns person” or “witch” in this activity. I plan to explicitly make an announcement to students that the purpose of this activity is to try and determine which one of their classmates was a witch and it is up to the townspeople to find them. In order to assist students with their investigation, I will display guided questions on the board that students may ask one another to help them determine the role their classmates are playing. During the next ~10 minutes, students will be questioning one another and participating on a classroom witch hunt.

The purpose of this lesson will be to give students a better idea of what the social climate was at the time of the witch trials, as well as teach students about how mob mentality ran rampant at this time in history through their reenactment of this concept in the lesson. Furthermore, students will directly be addressing the essential questions of this imagined unit in this lesson since they will be placing themselves at the time in history we would have been learning about. The purpose of this is to have students build a deeper connection with what they are learning through their performance from a specific point of view. I hope this will be a fun and engaging lesson that I can use in my future classroom in order to show students that things that were present in 17th century Salem – like paranoia and mob mentality – still show themselves in society today.

As You Read, Think About: What lessons can we learn from the Salem witch trials?

As Bridget Bishop enters the packed meetinghouse, five girls collapse to the ground. They scream, jabber nonsense, and twist in pain, as if Bishop has cast an evil spell on them. Villagers jeer at the 60-year-old woman. “Confess!” several of them demand.

The date is April 19, 1692, and Bishop is at the center of a public hearing in Salem, a village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She is accused of practicing witchcraft. The girls have claimed she is possessed by the devil—and is harnessing supernatural powers to make invisible spirits bite and pinch them.

Two local officials fire off questions: How can you know you are no witch? How is it, then, that your appearance hurts these girls? They say you bewitched your first husband to death. . . .

Next, the girls describe how Bishop tried to tempt them to worship the devil. One even claims she saw her brother fighting off a ghostly version of Bishop in the middle of the night.

Bishop firmly maintains her innocence, even as she grows frustrated—and increasingly fearful.

“I am no witch!” she says. “I am innocent!”

But the officials don’t believe her. Bishop is charged with five counts of witchcraft. She is thrown into jail to await trial with others accused of the same crime.

In the coming weeks, dozens more women, men, and even children will join them behind bars, as wild accusations of evil magic swirl throughout Salem. Before the hysteria is over, 20 innocent people will be put to death for witchcraft.

Panic Takes Hold

The trouble in Salem started earlier that year, in January. Most of the villagers were Puritans, a religious group that had left England seeking freedom to practice its beliefs. Their lives were defined by hard work and strict religious rules. Children and teens had few outlets for fun, especially during the winter.

To escape boredom and the frigid temperatures outside, a group of girls frequently met at Reverend Samuel Parris’s house in Salem. One day, two of those girls—Reverend Parris’s daughter Betty, 9, and his niece Abigail Williams, 11—began to act strangely. They tossed and turned uncontrollably on the floor, twisted their bodies like pretzels, and even barked like dogs. A doctor examined the girls and declared that witchcraft was causing their odd behavior.

Back then, witches and devils were considered a real threat. The Puritans believed forces of evil played a major role in their troubles. So when things went wrong, such as someone getting sick, the villagers often assumed witchcraft was at work.

“Puritans believed that everything that happened in life was a sign of God’s pleasure or displeasure,” says Emerson Baker, a historian at Salem State University in Massachusetts. “When bad things started to happen, they decided that God had sent witches as a test.”

The villagers believed they had to find—and punish—the witches among them.

I was so disappointed with the "Wicca harvest celebration" event. It felt like a cheap attempt to cash in on Wicca culture without any understanding or respect for the traditions. The organizers clearly had no knowledge of the history or significance behind these celebrations. The rituals felt forced and inauthentic, and the whole event seemed more like a mockery than a genuine celebration. I would not recommend it to anyone who is looking for an authentic Wicca experience.

I attended the "Wicca harvest celebration" event with high expectations, but unfortunately, it fell short. The event seemed disorganized, and there were minimal explanations or teachings about the significance of the rituals. It felt like a basic Halloween party rather than an actual ritualistic gathering. The decorations were tacky and the atmosphere lacked the mystical ambiance I was hoping for. Overall, it was a letdown and didn't provide the enriching experience I was seeking.

The event was also overcrowded, making it difficult to fully engage and immerse oneself in the activities. I left feeling unsatisfied and regretful of the time and money I had spent on this event.

The whole experience felt like a cheap cash grab, taking advantage of people's curiosity without offering any true understanding. I strongly advise against attending this event if you are seeking an authentic Wicca experience.
