Viktor & Rolf: Flowerbomb | A Wee Review

So if you follow me on Twitter, you may have noticed me asking my followers about their favourite scents and recommendations and one fragrance that created an overwhelming response was ‘Flowerbomb’ by Viktor and Rolf!

On my lunch break I took a stroll down to Debenhams and tested a bit; at the time I thought it smelt just “ok”, however I ordered the Eau De Parfum version anyway:

Flowerbomb is the debut fragrance from Amsterdam-based design team Viktor & Rolf. It was created by perfumers Olivier Polge, Carlos Benaim and Domitille Bertier and has notes of tea, bergamot, sambac jasmine, orange tree, catleya orchid, freesia, rose, and amber, musk, and patchouli.

30ml

Before I bought it, I read somewhere or another that Flowerbomb was designed to evoke an explosion of flowers, and so I rather foolishly expected that it would be a big white floral. I like a big white floral, but that isn’t what Flowerbomb is.

It starts with lots of sugar candy and a bit of citrus, and dries down to a sweet, slightly vanillic dessert of amber and patchouli. It’s very smooth and creamy, with no hard edges. There are some flowers along the way, but they aren’t assertive. I should not think you would have to like flowers to like Flowerbomb. I’m not really a “flower” person and on first impressions, I did think that the scent was too candyfloss-ish/sickly-sweet however, when you give it 10-20 minutes to dry……?

…HEAVEN. On my way to work i received quite a few compliments on it which I think was really nice!

I think they have succeeded in creating an easy to wear perfume that is likely to have widespread appeal to fans of sweet florientals. It is perhaps no surprise that almost every review of Flowerbomb I have seen mentions another fragrance that smells just like it. The prime candidate seems to be Angel, but Flowerbomb is a considerably more demure, well-behaved fragrance than Angel. Personally, I thought it smelled primarily like an Impulse body spray of ‘Fantasy’ by Britney Spears.

Viktor & Rolf Magic Dancing Roses & Magic Salty Flower ~ fragrance reviews

Has the "luxury collection" trend died down yet? I started tuning it out a long time ago, certainly before Robin posted about the Viktor & Rolf Magic Collection three years ago. The original six fragrances in that line — "a collection of six transformative illusions in the spirit of an enchanting universe from fragrance magicians Viktor & Rolf" — arrived in stores in early 2017 and I never bothered to try them.

Since then, the collection has shuffled and expanded a bit. (The price also seems to have dropped substantially.) I received a sample of Salty Flower with a Sephora purchase and spotted a positive comment about Dancing Roses in a friend's Instagram feed, so I tried that one too. Guess what? They aren't ground-breaking or life-changing, but I liked both of them. And with the price drop, they suddenly made a lot more sense to me.

Magic Salty Flower , launched in fall 2018, was developed for Viktor & Rolf by perfumer Marie Salamagne. It's described as a "surprising salt flower born from frangipani and tiare petals diving into a salty potion. A solar addiction playing with contrasts, between thrilling iodic freshness and sensual creamy texture." Additional notes include bergamot and orange blossom.

Salty Flower is part beachy floral, part solar oriental. If you liked Calvin Klein Reveal (discontinued a while back) you'll probably have similar feelings about Salty Flower. The buttery white florals are more noticeable for the first hour or so, with just a breath of creamy citrus, before the "salty" aspect starts to dominate. Then what you have is an iodine-tinged amber, a little bit sweet and a little bit mineral-sharp. The dry down is vanillic woody-musk. On my skin Salty Flower has excellent longevity and noticeable sillage.

In Magic Dancing Roses , developed by perfumer Sonia Constant for the original Magic line-up, rose "is transformed into a delectable liquor, thanks to juicy and fleshy cherries dipped in a white cognac infusion. The addition of saffron accord and a dry leathery suede note enhances the blend with incomparable elegance." Additional notes include bergamot, pink peppercorn, lychee, tonka bean, musks and amber. True to its promise, Dancing Roses starts off smelling just like a cherry cordial that you'd drink from a tiny crystal goblet. I do enjoy the occasional cherry fragrance, especially something fun like Hilde Soliani Una Tira L'Altra, so this is fine with me.

I'm actually a little disappointed when this fragrance "dances" off in the direction of rose, even though its interpretation of rose is pleasant enough--- — saffron-tinged, slightly jammy, then turning drier and ending up as a contemporary rose-chypre. I wouldn't be surprised if the idea of simplified Frédéric Malle Portrait of a Lady had come up during the development of Dancing Roses. On me, this fragrance has average longevity and lots of sillage in the first hour but less after that.

I've never been a fan of Flowerbomb or its various flankers, and Bonbon was a total scrubber for me. However, these two Magic fragrances are more my style, even if they're somewhat derivative. Have you tried any perfumes from the Viktor & Rolf Magic Collection? What did you think?

Viktor & Rolf Magic Salty Flower and Magic Dancing Roses are available as 75 ml ($145) Eau de Parfum.

Viktor & Rolf Magic Salty Flower EDP

It is a charming fragrance in golden tones that combines notes of bergamot oil, absolute orange flower, frangipani flower, jasmine sambac with an ambrox base, and moss arrangement that gives it that unique and sensual aroma. This Magic Salty Flower by Viktor & Rolf comes in a traditional apothecary bottle; it is an exotic eau de parfum.

The fragrance opens with a burst of marine notes, reminiscent of a coastal breeze. This is followed by delicate and feminine floral notes, such as jasmine and lily of the valley, which add a touch of elegance to the scent. The sea salt accord in Magic Salty Flower adds a unique twist to the fragrance, providing a contrast to the floral notes.

Reviews for "The Intricate Dance of Salt and Flowers: Viktor & Rolf's Magic Salty Flower Perfume Explored"

1. Bella - 2 stars
I was really disappointed with Viktor & Rolf Magic Salty Flower. The fragrance is way too overpowering and has a strange combination of scents that just don't work together. It starts off with a strong floral scent, which I don't mind, but then turns into a salty, musky mess. It's a very confusing fragrance that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. Plus, it doesn't last very long on my skin, so I constantly have to reapply it throughout the day. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this fragrance.
2. James - 1 star
I absolutely despise Viktor & Rolf Magic Salty Flower. The scent is incredibly cloying and overwhelming. It has a strong salty note that completely overpowers any floral or other nuances in the fragrance. It gave me a headache within minutes of wearing it. Additionally, the lasting power is terrible. Within an hour, the scent was completely gone. I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on this fragrance.
3. Emily - 2 stars
Viktor & Rolf Magic Salty Flower is a fragrance that didn't work for me at all. At first, I thought the combination of salty and floral notes would be interesting, but it just ended up smelling odd and unpleasant. The salty note was way too overpowering and made the floral scent almost non-existent. It also didn't last long on my skin, fading away within a couple of hours. Overall, I was not impressed with this fragrance and would advise others to try something else.
