Should You Use CurseForge? CEO Explains WoW App’s Privacy, Feature, Ad Changes

The Overwolf CurseForge app home screen for World of Warcraft and Minecraft, among other games.

World of Warcraft gamers and mod users got a new version of the Overwolf CurseForge app this week, just in time for WoW’s upcoming Shadowlands expansion, featuring changes to the app’s privacy settings, features and advertising.

Players were skeptical when Tel Aviv, Israel-based Overwolf bought CurseForge from Twitch for an undisclosed amount this summer. The app had been one of the most-common tools for updating the mods that many players use to tweak the appearance and function of Minecraft and WoW during gameplay. The Minecraft version is coming soon, according to the app’s home screen.

Overwolf’s reputation is mixed: It was well-known for enabling “overlay” application development for other games, allowing players to see game replays or surf the web while in-game. Some app creators earned huge amounts. But questions arose last year when a software news site and subsequent Reddit threads questioned its handling of user data from a TeamSpeak overlay.

We spoke with Overwolf chief executive Uri Marchand about how privacy and advertising would be handled in the new CurseForge app, and what new features might be included.

Uri Marchand, CEO and co-founder of Overwolf.

Heather Newman: Why did Overwolf buy CurseForge?

Uri Marchand: We started Overwolf as creators ourselves, building gaming apps, and were always fans of the work Curse did. As Overwolf evolved, we pivoted to focus on building Overwolf as a framework for third-party creators.

When we learned that Twitch was looking for a new home for CurseForge, we were immediately interested. They underwent a very thorough process to pick the right, sustainable home for CurseForge for the years to come -- and luckily picked us. We felt we could provide a good home for the entire CurseForge community, supporting both mod authors and gamers. This move marks our expansion in the market beyond in-game apps into game mods.

Newman: What is your vision for CurseForge moving forward?

Marchand: We want to build CurseForge as the home for all mod authors, and as a result a wonderful discovery platform for gamers. In our view, the way to get there is through constant listening to both mod authors and gamers alike, and to develop CurseForge in full transparency, like we’ve shared on our public board on Trello.

We see a future where building gaming apps and mods can be more than just a hobby. Overwolf believes creating in-game apps and mods can be a legit profession. We’ve already done it with gaming apps with some creators making over $1 million a year, and while we realize it’s going to be a journey and that apps and mods are not created equal, we’re committed to making this happen in the years to come.

We’re allocating a dedicated development team for CurseForge, which means you can count on improvements and innovation over time. We'll start with everything as is, and then gradually add new features and tools like global search and smart sync, based on the needs and interests of the community.

Newman: What are your plans to make this different/better than the Twitch app?

Marchand: We have a dedicated team for CurseForge, and we intend to continuously ship product patches [about] every two weeks to make the product better for games and authors. Further, we’re going to reintroduce subscription options, in an effort to generate more revenue streams, of which 70 percent will go to authors.

All the features in the CurseForge app will be available to all users, including quality-of-life features such as “Update All,” auto-install, Sync and multi-select features. We thought Update All [was] an important feature to add from the get-go, based on the feedback we’ve received. We hope to be able to provide further innovation for subscribers with time. We think that the main motivation to subscribe needs to be supporting authors.

Newman: What steps are you taking to address users' privacy concerns?

Marchand: We made significant changes to our privacy policy and data collection since June 2020, and we intend to continue iterating on that and set an example to the entire industry on how to handle data correctly. Our core principle is to provide control to the end-user, and very easy customization.

Broadly, similar to other software products like Discord and Steam, our client collects some data to work properly, personalize your experience, and store analytical data that is instrumental to improvement. Overwolf’s privacy settings let everyone customize data collection for personalizing their experience and storing analytical data. We’re committed to being transparent when it comes to what data is collected at each level. We have a detailed blog post about how we handle data.

We previously sold aggregated, non-personal data like “top PC games played in the U.S.” — similar to Steam Charts — to Newzoo, a trusted research agency that publishes reports on the gaming market. In June, we made the internal decision that we are not comfortable sharing any data with anyone, not even a research agency. So we ended that relationship and amended our privacy policy to reflect that we won’t sell any data.

Newman: Some users aren't too happy about any ads, let alone prominent ones. How will you strike the correct balance in the new app?

Marchand: We’re only going to introduce in-app banners and muted video ads, in a non-intrusive manner. You can see an example in the alpha, or at the screenshots from CurseForge’s Trello board.

We know that the gaming community has suffered from intrusive ads, especially in the Minecraft community, and we’re very much against that, to the point we pay tens of thousand of dollars monthly for ad-quality services. We’ll never use intrusive ads like pop-up ads, or ads that run while the app is minimized. Gamers can also pay for the premium subscription to turn off advertising and level up their support to creators.

Newman: How receptive have mod owners been to adding their products? WeakAuras 2 and ElvUI are missing for World of Warcraft, but present in other mod apps, for example.

Marchand: The response from authors was extremely positive, and we think that most of them were very happy to find a passionate and attentive team that’s looking to serve them and the gamers using their products. We also have ongoing conversations with content creators who are not on CurseForge, and we hope to team up with them as well in the future.

Newman: What do you see as CurseForge’s role in the market?

Marchand: Once there were carpenters, painters and master builders. Then there were lawyers, doctors and engineers. Then streamers and YouTubers. We’re committed to adding a new profession to this list: in-game creators.

We’re just starting our journey to make CurseForge the home for mod authors and a great place to discover mods. We’re learning every day, and we still have a lot to learn. We feel very honored to be able to contribute.

1. Ashley - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the "Pzgan yule coloring pages". The images were poorly designed and didn't provide enough detail to color in. The lines were also very faint, making it difficult to color within the lines. Additionally, the paper quality was subpar, causing the colors to bleed through and ruin the other side of the page. Overall, I wouldn't recommend these coloring pages to anyone looking for a satisfying and enjoyable coloring experience.
