Witching Night and Supernatural - Darynda Jones Darynda Jones is an American author known for her supernatural fiction, particularly her popular series "Charley Davidson" that features a paranormal private investigator. In her novels, Jones skillfully blends elements of mystery, romance, and the supernatural to create captivating stories that keep readers hooked. One of the remarkable aspects of Jones' writing is her ability to portray the witching night. This term refers to a night of heightened supernatural energy when witches and other magical beings are most powerful and practice their craft. Jones incorporates this concept into her novels to build tension and create a sense of otherworldly mystery. Jones' depiction of the witching night adds depth and intrigue to her stories.

(from the dust jacket)
There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, and with one mad king—George III. Red London, where life and magic are revered—and where Kell was raised alongside Rhy Maresh, the roguish heir to a flourishing empire. White London—a place where people fight to control magic and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London. But no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red traveler, ambassador of the Maresh empire, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.
Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs into Delilah Bard, a cutpurse with lofty ambitions. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

There is a brief history of the world given in the beginning of the book, about how the worlds used to have doors open between them for the people to travel, until Black London let the magic take over and forced the other worlds to seal the doors leaving Black London in ruin. Logically, I knew he wasn t going to die a third of the way through the first book of a series, but I fretted and gripped the book tighter nonetheless.
