The Curse of Ophelia

The war is over.
The curse is lifted.
Malakai is gone.

It’s been two years since Ophelia has seen the boy she loves. When a treaty was signed ending the war and lifting the curse on Mystique Warriors, Malakai left to attempt the sacred ritual known as the Undertaking.

He never returned, and the Undertaking was forbidden. Ophelia’s world crumbled around her.

Since then, she has pursued a fruitless search for answers. When the deadly curse resurfaces only on her, Ophelia finds solace in the idea that when she dies, she may finally be reunited with her lost love. Then, a messenger appears, telling her that she alone may be the one to save her people.

With her closest friends by her side, Ophelia embarks on a race against death—one that will not only challenge her physically, but make her question the Mystique leaders, the Angels, and her belief in love.

Can she win the fight against fate before the curse takes her life, or will the betrayals exposed along the way kill her first?

With influence from Greek Mythology, this debut is the first in a New Adult Fantasy Romance series full of heart-wrenching love, shattering betrayals, and fighting for what you believe in. Fans of Throne of Glass, From Blood and Ash, and The Bridge Kingdom will love it.

I’ll write a more detailed explanation later, but for now I’ll leave it at this: I’m biased because I wrote this book, but it holds my heart. I hope it can find a place in yours, too.

Congrats to Nicole on an excellent debut novel. This story is truly unique & the world is different than anything I’ve read. I’m truly excited to see where this journey goes.

Team Tolek. 10000%.

The first 40% was a lot of world building and the writing wasn’t as smooth as the last 60%. But once I hit that mark I couldn’t put it down.

I also wanted to strangle Ophelia for about 70% of the book lol like girl what are you doing?

But I really enjoyed Ophelia’s growth in the last 20% and the epilogue left me speechless!

The journey that I just went on while reading this was cohesively beautiful as it was emotionally engaging. Nicole is first and foremost, absolutely an incredible writer. The way that she’s able to plop the reader inside the mind of Ophelia and feel her frustrations and triumphs is outstanding. This doesn’t read like a debut novel, rather you can tell that every word and phrase has been crafted to fit the journey of the saga. I can’t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series because this one was so all-encompassing.

Ophelia herself is a star character and player. I can really see a lot of NA romantasy fans bonding to her (as did I) to all that she brings to the table. She’s strong, passionate — yet there is something beautifully human about the fact that she can feel such rage and raw human emotions. I found myself cheering for her in all corners and rooting for her success every time we cleared a hurdle.

Tolek.. where do I begin? Sassy, fun, elated, addicting, poetic… Just saying the hardest part of this book releasing is going to be me not being able to gate-keep this character from all of the super fans he’s about to have. He (and Nicole) deserve all of the success that’s coming for them. (Even though it’ll be hard for me to let go LOL)

For my NA romantasy fans… get ready. The Curse of Ophelia is about to take over the world. 🖤

The Curse of Ophelia follows, you guessed it, Ophelia. She is a warrior, her people being descended from angels. But, her people went to war, were cursed, and all has not been well since the war ended when the one her soul loves disappeared two years ago. Ophelia, with her friends and sister, decides to take fate in her own hands and embarks on a journey to follows the Angel Damien’s prophecy and save Malachi, her love.

Listen, I knew I was going to love this book within the first few chapters.

Found family, quests, magic… you name it, this book has it.

I am obsessed. The FMC, Ophelia, is SUCH. A. BADASS. She is giving muscle mommy and I’m here for every second of it. The friends that she has are each so different and make up the perfect main cast for the book. There were times when I gasped and when my heart broke for these characters, but I loved every second.

The magic system is unique and the storyline was never once boring.

I’m starting the second book immediately and no one can stop me.

i've had to think about it, but i think i am settling on 3.75. i've really enjoyed the first instalment of ophelia's journey, her world and her companions. i might have developed a sweet spot for tolek, santorina and jezebel the most, but i had fun reading about them all and can't wait to see how the dynamics will be now that malakai is there!

one of the things that interested me the most since the beginning was the world and magic system, and i hope to see more of that in the sequel to know more of it. i loved how ophelia began in the book and where she is now, always a force of nature, but eventually seeing her place in the world and her value. i am really curious to see what the plot has in store for her!

however, there is one thing that worries me about the plot and the turn it can take in the sequel. i have voiced this before so it won't come as a surprise. i do not love love triangles at all, and i am scared about those three characters falling into one. my wish and hope is that the original couple stays as they were at the beginning of the book (i have my reasons, come at me), but i guess we'll have to read the next book to find out!

overall, a great read and a really enjoyable first book in a new series!

cw: alcohol dependency, violence/torture

unfortunately this one did not work for me. didn’t mesh well with the writing, the dialogue was a bit much, and i didn’t like the mc at all. i liked a few of the side characters tho! but the plot was very formulaic and predictable. and the undertaking trials that were built up for 70% of the book were so underwhelming and easy. the plot itself was intriguing but the execution fell short for me. and the romance was very lackluster.

Edit after first read as published:
A fantastic debut. Probably the best debut indie book I’ve ever read!

Saving my star review for when I can read this in proper book form!! I was a beta reader for this and I loved it so much!! The characters are all amazing and the world is so unique and different! The emotions in this book though 😭

If you are looking for a book with instant gratification, this may not be the book for you. Minor spoilers ahead.

The book started off with Ophelia two years after the love of her life disappeared and her dream of being a Mystique Warrior was taken from her. Soon after the start of the story, she learns she has a curse that will lead to her imminent death. Because of this, it felt like she was resigned to her fate and therefore very closed off. It was difficult to build any strong ties to her or much of the character lineup as a result.

WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TOLEK. I found myself hoping Malakai committed some great betrayal so I could root for Ophelia and Tolek guilt free. No such luck, but there’s an entire series of opportunities.

I'm back and ready to flail. As most of you know I have been reading Dramione NONSTOP for the past, ohhhhh, year and a half now. For all of December and the first half of this month I have been back to actual books and I am not stopping any time soon. I forgot how much I missed walking in the shoes of all of these different characters in all of these other worlds, so, so much. This book was no exception.

As the first of a series, I was gladly thrust into an entirely new world full of complex governing structures, territories where people excelled at different things, and even other kinds of beings. Honestly there's still a bit I don't quite understand in the bigger scheme of things but I think that was intentional as the journey we went on with our main group of characters was to a specific place with a specific purpose. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing other lands and many more new characters as the series progresses.

Speaking of, while this story as a whole was a great balance of both plot and character-driven, I think the characters were my favorite part. I have always been that way. Obviously, a unique and well-developed plot (which this book definitely has) is very important but to me, having characters who are easy to relate to or even easy to love and hate is super important--always has been and always will be. Ophelia, our main character here is perfectly imperfect. She is a warrior at heart and because of that, she can be hot-headed and stubborn to a fault. Because she is still in a state of grief and mourning (a few different things) for the majority of this book, we get to see her as more than a larger than life Warrior figure--we see her humanity. We see her friends surrounding her, trying to help her and keep her sane. Cyph, Tolek, Rina, and even her sister Jezebel each play different roles in her life and keep her from breaking as best as they can. The found family trope is something that has always appealed to me because it means that these characters have CHOSEN to be a family. They don't feel obligated because they are blood related. they want to be there because. they just want to. I feel like I'm getting too deep into this but I just really love these characters so much, lol.

Anywayyyy this book has it all. Badass characters, romance that will make you ache, writing that I can't believe came from a debut author, and a plot that I'm dying for more of. You won't want to miss out on this one!

Huge thank you to Nicole Platania for allowing me to read an e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!♥

The term 'Metaphor' has passed through a number of changes of meaning since it was first used. In Greek it signified the 'transfer' of a word from one referent to another; as a result of definition and redefinition, it has been used, however, for verbal phenomena of various kinds and of different degrees of complexity. Aristotle's definition of metaphor is consequently both narrower and wider than some modern definitions. On the one hand he seems to use it to designate rather a simple verbal device, whereas to many modern critics the term is properly applied to literary devices of great psychological complexity. On the other hand, it is clear that for him metaphor comprised kinds of transfer ('species to genus and genus to species') which would now usually be called metonymy or synecdoche (or perhaps, in a discussion of change of meaning, generalization and specialization, or extension of restriction). In modern times the term is most frequently used to transfers based on the.

The present article investigates the abstract notion of human relations with a special reference to Hindi language within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory as proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). As the abstract notion of human relationship is complex, we find a wide range of conceptual metaphors applicable in understanding human relationship from different perspectives in terms of the mapping between the source and target domains. We also highlight the cross-cultural and cross-linguistic implications of conceptual metaphors in the study of human relationships.

Published in "Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Linguistics". Ed. Mark Aronoff, New York, Oxford University Press

Indian linguistic thought begins around the 8 th-6 th centuries BC with the composition of Padapāṭhas (word-for-word recitation of Vedic texts where phonological rules are not applied). It took various forms over these twenty-six centuries and involved different languages (Ancient, Middle and Modern Indo-Aryan as well as Dravidian languages). The greater part of documented thought is related to Sanskrit (Ancient Indo-Aryan). Very early, the oral transmission of sacred texts-the Vedas, composed in Vedic Sanskrit-made it necessary to develop techniques based on a subtle analysis of language. The Vedas also-but presumably later-gave birth to bodies of knowledge dealing with language, which are traditionally called Vedāṅgas: phonetics (śikṣā), metrics (chandas), grammar (vyākaraṇa) and semantic explanation (nirvacana, nirukta). Later on, Vedic exegesis (mīmāṃsā), new dialectics (navya-nyāya), lexicography (nighaṇṭu and later, kośa) as well as poetics (alaṃkāra) also contributed to linguistic thought. Though languages other than Sanskrit were described in premodern India, the grammatical description of Sanskrit-given in Sanskrit-dominated and influenced them more or less strongly. Sanskrit grammar (vyākaraṇa) has a long history marked by several major steps (Padapāṭha versions of Vedic texts, Aṣṭādhyāyī of Pāṇini, Mahābhāṣya of Patañjali, Bhartṛhari's works, Siddhāntakaumudī of Bhaṭṭoji Dīkṣita, Nāgeśa's works) and the main topics it addresses (minimal meaning-bearer units, classes of words, relation between word and meaning/referent, the primary meaning/referent of nouns) are still central issues for contemporary Linguistics.

This study identifies eight landmarks in the emergence of semantics in the Sanskrit tradition that deserve to be the subject of as many research projects designed to arrive at a sharper picture of these crucial episodes in the history of Indian thought with regards to their antecedents, circumstances and influence on later developments. That the Sanskrit philosophical and linguistic tradition contains material which is relevant for modern discussions on linguistic and philosophical semantics, or even that the Sanskrit tradition has important 'original' contributions to make to these discussions, has been emphasized by several authors familiar with both areas. However, although some important beginnings have been made, it will be safe to say that the 'study of semantics in the Sanskrit tradition' has still a long way to go before it will reach maturity. In the first place, we still need proper editions and translations of many basic texts of the different periods in this tradition; in the second place, even though a considerable number of texts are already available at least in a provisionally acceptable form, there is no framework of an outline of historical developments in which each text could find its place. The observations I make in this paper are an outcome of my study of some grammarians and philosophers in the Sanskrit tradition, and more specifically of my work in a research project on The emergence of semantics in four linguistic traditions. A volume with this title, in which four authors (W. van Bekkum, I. Sluiter, and K. Versteegh, Jan E.M. Houben) deal with the emergence of semantics in the Hebrew, Greek-Latin, Arab, and Sanskrit tradition, has appeared in the series Studies in the History of the Linguistic Sciences (van Bekkum, Houben, Sluiter, Versteegh, Amsterdam: John Benjamins, 1997). Semantics is taken in the very general sense of -- to quote Keith Allan's definition in the Encyclopedia of Linguistics, Oxford 1992 -- “the study and representation of the meaning of language expressions, and the relationships of meaning among them” (Allan 1992: 394).

My magical conjurer

Whether it is through a grand stage show or an intimate gathering, they can transport people to a world of fantasy and wonder, where the impossible becomes possible. But behind the captivating façade, my magical conjurer is also a wise and thoughtful individual. They use their powers responsibly, never exploiting or harming others with their abilities. Instead, they seek to use their magic to bring joy, hope, and a sense of awe to those who witness their acts. In their presence, time seems to slow down, as if the world holds its breath in anticipation of the next magical marvel that is about to unfold. Each performance is an invitation to escape from the mundane realities of life and embrace the limitless possibilities of the imagination. My magical conjurer is a living testament to the power of belief and the wonders that can be achieved when the boundaries of reality are pushed. They inspire us to dream, to question the impossible, and to embrace the magic that lies within ourselves. In a world that often feels mundane and predictable, my magical conjurer is a beacon of enchantment and wonder. Their presence reminds us that there is still room for mystery and magic in our lives, and that sometimes, all we need is a little bit of belief to unlock the extraordinary..

Reviews for "The Essence of Magic: Unveiling the Secrets of a Mysterious Conjurer"

1. John - 2 stars - I found "My Magical Conjurer" to be a disappointing read. The plot felt weak and underdeveloped, with no clear direction or purpose. The characters lacked depth and were completely unrelatable. The writing also fell short, with awkward dialogue and repetitive descriptions. Overall, I was expecting a magical and enchanting story, but I was left feeling bored and uninterested.
2. Sarah - 1 star - "My Magical Conjurer" was a complete waste of time. The story was full of cliches and predictable twists. The main character was infuriatingly naïve and made questionable decisions that didn't make any sense. The romance felt forced and lacked any real chemistry. The world-building was lackluster and failed to captivate my imagination. I struggled to finish this book and would not recommend it to anyone.
3. Michael - 2 stars - I had high hopes for "My Magical Conjurer", but it failed to live up to my expectations. The pacing was incredibly slow, and it took forever for anything significant to happen. The magic system was confusing and poorly explained, leaving me feeling disconnected from the story. The writing style also had a tendency to be overly descriptive, weighing down the narrative. Unfortunately, this book just didn't do it for me.
4. Emma - 2.5 stars - "My Magical Conjurer" had an interesting premise, but it fell flat in execution. The characters lacked depth and development, which made it difficult for me to care about their fates. The dialogue felt unnatural and forced, and the interactions between the characters were lacking in genuine emotion. The pacing was inconsistent, with some parts dragging on while others felt rushed. Overall, I found this book to be a mediocre read and was left wanting more from the story.
5. Alex - 1.5 stars - I have to say, "My Magical Conjurer" was a major disappointment. The plot was unoriginal and predictable, offering nothing new or exciting. The main character was incredibly annoying and made decisions that were frustratingly illogical. The writing style was dull and failed to engage me. I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters or their struggles. Overall, I regretted picking up this book and would not recommend it to others.
