Sylvester the Magic Pebble is a beloved children's book written and illustrated by William Steig. The story follows the life of a donkey named Sylvester Duncan who finds a magic pebble that grants wishes. Sylvester's journey begins when he discovers the magic pebble one day while exploring a nearby stream. Excited by his find, he excitedly wishes that the pebble could become a lion. Much to Sylvester's surprise, his wish comes true, and the pebble transforms into an actual lion. However, Sylvester's celebration is short-lived when he realizes that he cannot hold the pebble to wish himself back into a donkey.

A vehicle accident took our Merlin away on Sept. 11, a day already marked by great sadness. His booming voice, kind heart and large personality will remain forever in our hearts. Rest in peace, Captain Merlin. It’s been Reel Magic. We got Michelle your “Mrs. Beautiful.”

Bodega Bay mourns captain’s death

With a sad and heavy heart, I share the passing of Captain Merlin Kolb of Bodega Bay at the young age of 52.

He had a dream and was determined to make it a reality. - To own a fishing vessel and to become a Captain on the high seas. Yes, he became Captain Merlin Kolb of Reel Magic Fishing Charters. Seeking the elusive salmon, shy yet aggressive Dungeness crabs or the ling cod that are big-mouthed, feisty, bottom-dwelling fish. I can hear him joking “here little fishy fishy.” Taking children out, teaching them the love of the ocean and how to catch a fish themselves was his mission. Always exhibiting that exuberance typically visible only in children. Captain Merlin performed magic on the high seas. A blue hoochie was his lure of choice but his “Crabby Dance” was infamous. No way could you watch it without busting up or busting a move!

Sitting with Merlin at the Bodega Bay Grange at 2 a.m., with our feet propped up on the mop bucket, after feeding, caring and housing evacuees from the 2017 Tubbs fire. Exhausted but knowing we need to stay awake to watch over traumatized evacuees who lost everything or just needed a safe place to go. He was first to lead the charge to get the Grange open.

Sharing the ocean bounty from the Reel Magic Sport Fishing Charters with all his friends by showing up with a bag of fresh cod, crabs or salmon! Of course, he was wearing his knee-high rubber boots, baggy shorts and his Reel Magic logo shirt displaying the remnants, and ocean perfume of fishing and working hard all day. His ability to find fish for his charter clients demonstrated the expertise and “luck” he brought to his passion of fishing. Few could find the elusive fish like Captain Merlin Kolb could. His locations were a mystery if you listened to him on the radio, you knew his smile from keeping the secret was on the other end.

Cleaning and filleting 30 salmon in 30 minutes for our local nonprofit, Waves of Compassion Foundation, was one of his generous community gifts he bestowed upon us. He knew the less fortunate may not be able to enjoy this delicious, expensive, and healthy fish so he volunteered to prepare them to be given away at our food pantry.

A boat circling in the ocean in front of my home ten times to honor my 94-year-old Dad as he departed earth. A request to pick up some special antique plates to honor his wife, Michelle’s, birthday. A text on a Wednesday to organize a retirement party that coming Saturday for his love. A call asking if I can give Michelle a ride to San Francisco for tests or surgery for Michelle’s breast cancer which later turned to brain cancer. A battle Merlin was well suited to fight on her behalf, gathering the best Doctors and care at UCSF, saving her life and his love, Michelle. The battle is ongoing but never did he waiver in the belief God would protect her.

His boat was taking on water, the Miss Anita, while Captain Merlin was at the helm. His first instinct was to save his passengers and crew. He carefully brought the boat to Salmon Creek where he was able to beach it saving everyone. He was a hero. Praising his quick thinking, the Coast Guard presented Merlin with a Certificate of Merit. “Your courageous actions, diligent focus, and heroic efforts likely saved the lives of the people on board and exemplified your commitment to the safety of life at sea,” the proclamation read.
