The Curse of Silence Silence can sometimes be a dangerous thing. Although it is often seen as a peaceful and serene state, silence can also be a curse that hinders communication and perpetuates injustices. The curse of silence can manifest itself in various forms, from individuals refusing to speak up about an issue to entire communities ignoring systemic problems. In either case, the consequences can be significant and long-lasting. At the individual level, the curse of silence can be observed when people choose to remain silent about important matters. Whether out of fear, complacency, or a lack of awareness, staying silent can allow harmful practices to persist.
The Undying Magician has done a good job at maintaining the balance between its different aspects. We are given plenty of chances for the characters to show who they are, the school is established and just as mystifying in some ways to us readers as it is to Nathan, and there is a constant stream of bite-sized information about what is happening with this strange immortality 'disease' that our MC has been afflicted with as well as the general structure of the world. The classes serve as ways for us to learn about the systems of the world that we will be dealing with as well as establish the dynamics of the learning environment that our main cast of characters will be, presumably, interacting in for a significant portion of coming story.
On top of that, it deals with characters that are effectively fresh out of high school and all the messy and compelling emotions that come from that time of our lives. Also interesting is that the Undying invite her to drink from the cup of ice and the cup of fire something I hadn t picked up until re-reading the chapter now.
Whether out of fear, complacency, or a lack of awareness, staying silent can allow harmful practices to persist. For example, if an employee witnesses workplace harassment but chooses not to speak up, they contribute to the perpetuation of a toxic environment. Similarly, if a friend observes a harmful behavior but does not intervene, they become complicit in the harm inflicted.
Chapter focus: Dany IV, ACOK – the House of the Undying
Hey ho! Long time no blog. Bad me. Sorry, full time study is more arduous than I remember it being as an undergraduate, and staying afloat on a sea of commerce subjects didn’t leave me much time to blog about fun things, or do the well over due re-read of ASOAIF.
Maybe I should start that anyway, as I dive into my second trimester. Use a chapter or two of ASOIAF a night as a reward for a day of study?
As I do re-read, I’d like to do more chapter-focused blogs, looking at particular chapters or character arcs in depth. I’ve been thinking a lot about prophecy and Dany, and she has one chapter in particular which resonates throughout the series: her trippy experience in the House of the Undying.
