Akata Witch is a fantasy novel written by Nnedi Okorafor. The story follows the adventures of a young girl named Sunny Nwazue, who discovers that she has magical powers and becomes a member of a secret society of magical people known as the Akata. Set in Nigeria, the novel combines elements of African mythology and culture with a contemporary urban setting. The Akata Witch series consists of two books: Akata Witch, published in 2011, and Akata Warrior, published in 2017. In the first book, Sunny learns about her abilities as a "free agent" and trains with other Akata to develop her magical skills. About the Author
MARY POPE OSBORNE is the author of the New York Times number one bestselling Magic Tree House series. She and her husband, writer Will Osborne (author of Magic Tree House: The Musical), live in northwestern Connecticut with their three dogs. Ms. Osborne is also the coauthor of the companion Magic Tree House Fact Trackers series with Will, and with her sister, Natalie Pope Boyce.
SAL MURDOCCA has illustrated more than 200 children's trade and text books. He is also a librettist for children's opera, a video artist, an avid runner, hiker, and bicyclist, and a teacher of children's illustration at the Parsons School of Design. 1. Sarah - 2/5 - I found the Akqta Witch series to be incredibly slow-paced and lacking in depth. The characters felt one-dimensional and their actions often felt arbitrary and inconsistent. The story itself didn't seem to have a clear plot or direction, making it difficult for me to become invested in the outcome. Additionally, the writing style was bland and uninspiring, failing to evoke any emotions or create a captivating atmosphere. Overall, the Akqta Witch series left me feeling disappointed and unfulfilled.
2. Michael - 1/5 - I really struggled to get through the Akqta Witch series. The plot was convoluted and confusing, with too many unnecessary subplots that only served to add to the overall confusion. The world-building was lacking, leaving me with a lot of unanswered questions about the magical system and the rules of the Akqta world. The characters were forgettable, with little to no development or depth. The dialogue felt forced and artificial, making it difficult for me to connect with any of the characters. Overall, I found the Akqta Witch series to be a tedious and unsatisfying read.
